Days Out: Keighley Bus Museum
Last week my Dad Joe and myself paid a visit to the excellent Keighley Bus Museum which is located at Riverside Technology Park off of Dalton Lane in Keighley West Yorkshire. It's all in an old industrial building that's allegedly haunted - combining my two interests buses and ghosts! Anyway, we had a great time looking at all the old Bradford, Leeds, West Yorkshire and Huddersfield buses. They had buses there to suit most tastes including Leyland PD Titans, Daimler CVG6s, Bristol VRs Daimler Fleetline, MCW Metrobuses and the obligatory Routemasters.
On the same day there was a model railway exhibition across the road being held by the the Aire Valley Railway Modellers Club with free vintage bus rides being held around the town.

Hello, Now this could be quite an emotive subject! Has the traditional bus rally or running day had it's day? In this video I look at the reasons why. I hope you enjoy this video, if so please consider sharing and liking it and subscri...

Cliquey behaviour among themselves between tribes who favour a marque over others and who have differing ideas on what constitutes preserving a bus. Example some insist upon hubcaps even if they ran without them in service, or someone likes period advertisements for that authentic look and others want clean skin and concourse condition. But, the New York City Transit Authority has, thankfully, kept many examples of old, retired buses as part of their museum fleet. Once a year, they have the Brooklyn Bus Festival, the next one is in exactly one week. But it's just not the same after they changed the location - now somewhat difficult to get to and in a smaller, confined area. When I started on the buses, it was the timtronic, but I used a setright on Citylink.

@JakeSCOC The timtronic's Achilles heel was when water dripped down the destination handle and landed on the machine. It shorted out. I used it when I worked for AA buses in Ayrshire. Another well-known firm that used them was Eastern Scottish.

I drove several marks of the Lodekka, starting with a stick box and then the luxury of a semi-auto with overdrive! The fleet belonged to a hospitality catering company, BUS FARE, based in Cranleigh, Surrey. The vehicles were beautifully converted to suit various clients and were fitted with an 3/4 awning system that effectively formed a pavillion for exhibition space or bar and table seating. One of their clients sponsored formular 1 racing and the buses were often seen at most of the European Grand Prix circuits to provide catering for their guests. The distances we covered were bonkers as we travelled accross Europe. Rain and snow running into the cab on your right leg and first degree burns on the left from the engine housing. Brake fade was always in our minds during several hours of mountain descent. Lower gears of little help either as it would just spin up the transmission until it sounded like a Stukka bomber! Scary too, looking over the edge of some of the mountain bends ( think, Italian Job film) There were often the burned-out remains of artics in the ravines to keep us focussed. Having gone to school on these in Bristol when little, I could never have imagined driving one over/under the Alps when old enough to know better. I do miss it though. Thanks for the informative history. Keep up the good work.

@@stiletto56 That's fascinating to read. Thank you for sharing your memories. I bet that was a bit hairy on some of those descents down! I've only driven a crash box down the Kentish hills - nowhere near like a mountain! Glad you liked the video.

Do we think, engine design has gone backward with buses? I would say so. These powered the MCW coupled to that musical Voith Gearbox proper noise imho and before the low emission stuff. But mechanically miles better than the engines today

Ironically the rectangle headlights age them as do the BMAC 759 tails. Interesting to see the same Scania cone shaped hubs used all the way back then. A nightmare to fit hubodometers to. A New Zealand company makes a four legged hubodometer bracket for them to counter their tendency to be knocked off centre. Even the brake noise emits the same note as 1990s Scanias such as the L113 series. They make an odd whine as they take off from a standing start.
