I found this car camping spot on the iOverlander app. It is incredibly hard to find free camp spots near California beaches, so I knew it was a risk. Two locals told me that everyone knows that vans sleep on this road, so I decided to take a chance. I cannot confirm if this is legal, but there were no signs saying 'No Camping'. There are many turnouts above the reservoir and I saw about 5 other...

Women should never camp alone. So many women are killed every day .If you really want to go alone take some gun, knife for protection, pepper spray,I watched some men going camping alone and they were attacked at night or stalked by some psychos, maybe some escaped from jails.Animals like bears are very scary too.

People need to just leave other campers alone, but men especially need to just leave women alone out camping or traveling. If someone needs help, then help them, expecting nothing in return, then move on. I can't stand predators or creepers. Generally when people are out camping or hiking by themselves, that exactly the way they want it...by themselves. Stay safe.

Thank you for sharing. This is my current biggest worry about moto camping and traveling. Other humans - Especially when somewhere remote. I've a healthy respect for wildlife and nature, but humans are... a different thing altogether.* My take most likely stems from a mixture of common sense, a hiatus from camping, wanting to get away (which is why I'm out to begin with), and listening to one too many "absolutely true and not at all obviously made up scary story videos". All this typed, I've only gotten "bad vibes" from a handful of people/situations over the course of my life. Knock on wood. I left those situations ASAP every time. It doesn't matter if I was right. On the other hand, I've also experienced irrational reactions to situations that may not have been warranted (and knowing that doesn't change the feeling, as by that time the ole noggin has already done it's thing - AKA flooding). Regarding a number of other comments, gender has nothing to do with it. Some of the comments come off as sexist (whether or not it was intended), which isn't kosher. Please be considerate. I'm glad our host covered this in the video and explained their particular situation so articulately and in a grounded fashion. My second largest concern while traveling? Much more grounded - Mechanical issues. Okay, all this said (yet again), I've met many nice, interesting and sometimes amazing people while on the road. There's just this underlying (mostly) subconscious primal fear about meeting a bad egg (or eggs) somewhere remote. Many concerns are warranted to varying degrees, but shouldn't impact your adventures (insofar as to actually having them or not). * I may have something of a "love/hate" relationship with humankind. Sour experiences can be cumulative and loan weight to "bad apple" axioms.

I don't know, to me it sounds like the guy was just making conversation. This is the difference between men and women I guess. Men typically ask other men questions? Like are you catching anything? What kind of bait are you using? Do you frequent this or that place? Typically, I don't mind answering a few questions. Or firing off a few questions of my own. That's just how men are. It's like trading information, or expressing what you know to prove that yes I do frequent these parts. Often men will give you fishing tips or hazard information for the area.

You should keep a gun with you when you camp. There's a lot of weird people in remote areas and they seem to just show up. I'm a man and I still don't like to camp alone outside of an actual campground. I prefer to have safety in numbers when I disperse camp. Crazy things happen in the Sierra mountain range in California and pretty much every national forest in America stay safe and keep some protection with you at all times. Always have mine on my person while in the woods.

I’m so glad you listened to your intuition but I have a question….because we are female, we are more prone to be polite rather than wanting to appear rude. What did you say to this creepy guy? After he mentioned his daughter, did you just say,”ok… that’s it. I’m out of here” and start packing up while he was there? Or something along the lines of “I have to go now, I’m meeting a friend at another campsite. Bye!” I plan to do some car camping this fall and would love some ideas of what to say should that happen to me. 😊

Never go camping out into the wilds and deep woods without a weapon a gun preferred, at minimum an 8" survival knife or machete. I use a sensor-activated intruder alarm and a garden solar motion-activated light too. I also have a couple of loud firecrackers that if I hear any menacing movement outside I light one up and shout "fire in the hold" throw it outside "BANG!!! things quiet down after that.

similar thing happened to me this spring, was camping by myself sitting by the fire at night, some dude in a car quickly pulled into my campsite around midnight, couldnt see who it was because it was dark. It was a local dude who just started trying to have a random conversation with me asking where i was from and where i was going, I could tell he was drunk but i think he was just lonely. He finally got the hint that i wasnt comfortable and he finally left. First time i had to grip my gun while talking to a stranger. He seemed friendly in retrospect but it really put me on edge.
