    16:30 you guys need to learn a bit more anatomy. The air we INHALE is ~21% oxygen and 78% Nitrogen, and the air we EXHALE is ~16% oxygen 78% Nitrogen and 5% CO2 (1% trace elements not counted). We only use ONE QUARTER of the OXYGEN we breathe (and ONLY the oxygen), and if you exhale that same amount of CO2 IT DOESN'T MATTER, since CO2 can't pass back into the blood (but if the atmospheric CO2 level is high it can't EXIT the blood either), so the person receiving the exhaled air will just exhale more CO2 than their body processed. But as long as the air being received is greater than 60% of atmospheric oxygen levels (about 13%) they'll be fine for a while.

    5:15 Chief Joseph Flythe IS one of the instructors at A School at Elizabeth City, NC, and stated that Ashton had actually PASSED many (NOT ALL) of the tests they had to take to become a Rescue Swimmer. 5:52 Treading water while wearing overalls or clothing is EASY if you just get air pockets in the shoulders (wet cloth acts like a balloon). doing that you can stay afloat for several hours with very little effort. (Something learned during NAVY ship escape training ... back-skull [upside-down breaststroke] underwater two widths of the pool, breaststroke three lengths of the pool [both these wearing overalls and boots], then tread water for an hour [you can remove your boots for this])

    Is it common to see former competitive swimmers become SAR swimmers

    • @tresfordays9644
      @tresfordays9644 Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, there are a lot of competitive swimmers from high schools and college who become rescue swimmer because the want to keep doing something with swimming and out there skills to use. That being said, just because you’re a competitive swimmer doesn’t mean it’s going to be cake for you, just means the swimming portion will be easy. Focus on the other aspects of the training and workouts you might not be as proficient at. Running, calisthenics, little bit of weight training.

    So I have 5 daughters and 1 son. All of them race starting at 4yrs old as I did which is a male dominated sport. My daughters have been accepted. Now I have to say everytime they’ve faced inappropriate comments or sexual harassment. They literally blow a gasket and go off before I can get over to address it. They don’t have the beta pushover mindset. My 9yr old daughter I had to pick her up and drag her out because she hit a 14yr old with a coil spring, no joke he made advancements towards her right In public at the race track. Which is just a future pedo. -- But all of them will not tolerate it for a second. they have a very Alpha personality. -- My wife and I taught them since birth; YOU TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO TREAT YOU! Whatever you do or say that communicates to everyone you 100% believe it’s perfectly acceptable. So with my daughters. I always tell them. A lot of people don’t have good parents. Humans are primates! The reason they made the Bible was to domesticate the population. Animals naturally will kill each other. So the kids that don’t have parents present, they are undomesticated animals. So I made a point to tell them. Hey if a boy does X, Y, Z you have a perfect opportunity to help them by telling them that’s not socially acceptable. Believe it or not we are biologically hardwired to reproduce just like dogs or cats will start humping each other. So if a human has not been properly domesticated, they will go around and do this just like a monkey, gorilla, dog, cat, chimp, lion etc. either for reproduction or domination. It’s gotta be trained out of a person. All primates or animals are biologically hardwired that way as the baseline so we don’t go extinct. So it’s gotta be corrected if you have a friend that’s a total pervert or harassing you gotta tell teach them the right way since the parents obviously failed them.

    Im retired AT1, Coast Guard. I own a Truck now and Im sitting at a Truck Stop in Tallulah Louisianna with a Black Man wearing a Navy Ballcap with a Master Chief Anchor. He starts telling me his story about being a Rescue Swimmer on Carriers on the East Coast. Tells me about some Cocky Arrogant LT who had to Punch Out. He got on scene and the guy would not follow instructions so he Slapped some sense into him with his Lead Weighted glove and got him in the sling. The Chief got called on the carpet over why he smacked the Pilot , then told his story and the Captain snickered and dismissed him. The moral of the story was Dont Act The Fool. PS. This Master Chief has 2 Daughters that are Current Navy Rescue Swimmers! Im sure some of you East Coast Navy guys know of this man.

    Id like to Add one funny story about Mathew Fithian, rescue swimmer #4. To watch him.swim.was like watching a telephone pole. He was 6ft 3 and if he hit the boat by mistake he would have sunk it. He would nap in the 1st class lounge and his hand would move in his sleep to grab a sandwich out of his lunch bag. One day he deploys to Hurricane Hugo, and he gets out and he asks some airport employee is there is any fast food place open. The guy looks at him like hes nuts and says no , A hole, we just had a hurricane. Lol😂 that was Matt. Steve Ober was stationed in Traverse city also. I think he was Rescue Swimmer #1. A legend.❤

    A Marine A4 jet caught fire and the pilot and copilot ejected halfway between Hawaii and San Diego. 2 PJ's out of McCord jumped from the C 4. One lost his life. The other 3 made it. I was on the last flight to look for the PJ. We shut down 2 engines to give us an extra half hour on scene but one engine would not restart. So we had to transfer fuel. When we did we smelled smoke. A green rag clogged the pump and we had to dump 1/4 of our fuel. We where not making it back to oahu and where set to ditch at night 60 miles shy of Hilo, our alternate. We resigned ourselves to our fate because we where fighting a 120 mile an hour headwind. We where all praying, with me praying directly to that PJ. Every 15 minutes the Navigator would re plot the headwind. Each time he reported the wind decreasing. It was like a close Superbowl game as each time our ditching point got closer to Hilo. Finally we where running on fumes as we approached the airport at a steep angle to avoid crashing into houses should we flame out. That PJ Saved Our Life! LtCDR Fothergill and the Copilot got out and Kissed the runway, something I only saw Helicopter Pilots do before. The Navigator was Joe " The Weasel" Mazzell and the flight Engineer was Willy Williams, who saved his Air force C130 at Khe Sanh. By thrusting the throttles forward to avoid a motar attack. Coast Guard C130 1339. March 1983.

SAR runs in his Family with his father being a PJ during Vietnam and they had his Dad on an old TV show called This is Your Life and brought back people his dad saved.

    Im retired Coast Guard. In March 1983 a Marine A4 flew from.Barbers Pt Hawaii to San Diego. They caught 🔥 fire refueling. They punched out. Watched the jet explode 3 seconds later. The pilot stretched out his arms to stop the tumble on his descent from. 33 thousand feet to 10,000 feet where the parachute opens auromatically. When it did it dislocated his shoulder. He could not get into his one man life raft. The copilot was seperated. 2 air force PJ's jumped to save them. One broke his neck and drowned. After a freighter picked up the 3 survivors, i was on the last flight to find the missing PJ from.McCord AFB. We shut down 2 engines to extend our search by 30 minutes. Totally against the rules, but a rule the coast guard broke every time😅... we dropped a wreath to honor that PJ but when we went to start the off engines we smelled smoke. A green scrub rag clogged the fuel pump so we had to dump 1/4 of our fuel. We where not making it home. We ascended into the jet stream which we had to fight to get back. But as we prayed and proceeded, the jet stream got slower and slower. We made it back to Hilo on fumes. That Air Force PJ from McCord saved our lives. He stopped the jet stream. They need to name something after him

Tried joining coast guard for rescue swimming but they wouldn't take me because of hand tattoos i had at the time. Ended up joining Air Force as a SERE specialist. Was wondering if you guys knew at what time I would be eligible to cross train over to CG Rescue Swimmer. I'm 28 now and into 1 year of my contract right now. Thank you guys for everything you do.

      Hey Caleb, rsmguide@gmail.com This is going to be a question for a recruiter. The Coast Guard is trying to create policy for an easier transition from other services in to our pipeline but I don't have specific details. Send me an email and I'll try to get you in touch with someone. Alternatively, you can go to gocoastguard.com and see if you can chat with a recruiter. Best of luck!

    Hey Vince, my names Gage Ford. I did 3 seasons with cal fires Inamte handcrew as a Sawyer. I’m currently an EMT and my record is expunged. I got my entire record cleaned out on my own, and I was on the apple fire, El dorado fire, Kincaid fire and literally 80% of the fires thru 2019-2021. I’ve worked with more hotshot crews than I have fingers , love them. I survived being burned over 2 times in riverside, and was on the fire when Mr.Morton during the tragedy. I don’t know if you’ve ever had the opportunity to discuss our life styles with someone like me but bro SKODUCKS. So we’re already brothers. I also love surfing / bodyboarding.

    Surfing alone and looks like the sun is setting. Risky! Why no surf leash? Surfers and bodyboarders need good swimming skills and ocean sense. Often the most dangerous time learning a sport is early or at a transition. Maybe that was happening here. Guard did a great job getting out, getting the sunken patient and waiting for help while giving respirations. Thanks for the interesting footage and discussion.
