Tone Wings in my Drum Kit Part 2
Full Transparency: Since I made the first Tone Wings drum kit video, I am now a Tone Wings artist. My first attempt at showing off how a drum set sounds with them installed did not turn out as well as I had hoped and so I have made this part 2 to better demonstrate how these work and sound.
Installed @tonewingsin my DW Performance Series drum kit: 2 in the rack tom, 4 in the floor tom, and 4 in the bass drum.

All Maple HVLX Shells. Black Diamond FinishPly. Sizes are 9x13, 14x16 & 18x22. I used a 6.5x14 DW 3mm Aluminum snare with 2 wings installed.

Wow, gorgeous finish and the sound, ufffff, amazing...the 57 on the "gong drum" didn't help much sound wise but, read that you've replaced/added a bottom mic... I personally own a DW Collectors in Cherry wood and the sound of Cherry is amazing. Thanks for sharing your drums. 🥁

Did it take away some of the growl from the floor tom? Or some of the basketball sound?
It takes out the weird warble that can occur. Makes the sound a little more focused and punchy like having re-rings in the shell.
I can hear it in the floor Tom however it just sounds like it was tuned better after the device was installed.
It definitely add balance to the tuning on the drum. Takes out some of the warble that can happen in the floor toms.
Beautiful Finish!! I would have went with deeper shells...see more of that gorgeous finish! How long from when you placed your order until it arrived at your house? Congrats!
Thank you! She is a beaut! As much I agree about having deeper shells to get more of the finish, the shallower shells sound better. Less wonky resonance. More fundamental tone of the shell/note. Plenty of punch and bottom end.
They be one of my choices. I love my Tama starclassic walnut birch. In tamo ash with black nickle hardware.

I own a custom DW set that I bought off Jason Bonham. I love it so much I didn't dare leave it in a friend's studio with everything else I owned. The studio burnt down but I still have my recording kit.

Beautiful kit, just a question floor bass drum..??? What is inside?? It doesn't come resonance, sound like you put pillow inside?? I would put everything out to get really open sound.... But it is your drum kit.... Great kit
Hey John. When I made the video, I had an SM57 micing the floor bass drum from the top which made it sound less resonant and punchy. Just more attack and less body. I have since placed a mic underneath and it sounds more like it should now. Punchy, boomy, and more resonant.

That's a bold statement. DW are great for what they do, that's big sounding drums, but there are better sounding drums for sure.
The "middle" of the tom hits seem to have more punch/body. The attack sounds the same and the length of decay sound the same. Hatd to explain. Maybe like they "breathe" more....like they are taking deeper breaths or something.
Yeah. It is hard to explain but it definitely adds more punch in the mids while eliminating certain wonky overtones. But that’s something you hear more in person than anything else. I have to say, I did use them for a live show recently and they sounded incredible. It does help that these drums are great sounding regardless though.
I never liked the camco round lugs.
Not sure y But when I listen to Pearl, drum demonstrations, the drums just never seem to have enough body not sure if they always just tune them too high

10 and 13 tom set up is different?
Yeah. I've always preferred 13" over 12" as my main rack tom but I love the having the higher pitched 10" for setting up a larger drum fill or adding a some flare depending on the song/part.
@@ChrystianKaplan Even 3 inch spread too, 10 13 16.
I just know most 2 up, 2 down setups these days tend to be 10, 12, 16, 18

the tunings are VERY different, that rack tom has jumped up at least 2 semitones in pitch. not really a situation where a real conclusion can be drawn
I agree the rack tom is higher but the floor tom and kick are pretty spot on.

Which acoustic drums do u suggest for beginners? In budget range!!!
PDP are DWs budget friendly brand. I recommend those if you’re on a tight budget.

PDP Concept Maple are a perfect beginner set and price.

Thanks for making and sharing this video. What I am hearing not much of a difference. Maybe the feel is different. I am wondering what it does with Toms. Without muffling they ring to much wenn these can solve that problem I am really interested. Greetings from Austria 🙂👍
Thanks for your thoughts, Hans! I think the audio didn’t translate as well as I had hoped. I noticed more mid-low range punch in the snare after installing but I only used one mic for this video so that could be part of the reason you can hear a discernible difference.
