Straight Blade Draft Horse Fuller for Ft Worth WCB 2024 Season Finals
Riley Kirkpatrick and I were in New Mexico last week at WCB headquarters and figured we'll get started on making the specimens for the 2024 Ft Worth WCB season finals that we're judging this winter. In the two-man class there will this style straight blade draft fuller that you'll have to make in the class and then use it to fuller the draft bar shoe in the class. Riley takes you through the whole process he used to make the fuller and talks a little about what he expects to see as well. Hope this helps you all out that are planning on going and wanted to put this out there early enough for you to get a jump on them if this will be your first time making fullers!

Aluminum Horseshoes for a Show Hunter
zhlédnutí 3KPřed měsícem
Some disciplines of riding horses prefer to be shod with aluminum horseshoes. In this case, I shod a show hunter and they like to have her done up with aluminum shoes. Typically shoeing a horse with unclipped shoes is pretty straightforward but with any horse that is jumping obstacles, there needs to be clips on the shoes to share the workload with the nails otherwise the shoes would sheer righ...
Practicing Hunter Heels Using 12" Piece of Concave for Efficiency & Progression

I used one piece of concave steel i had to practice the element, hunter heels, which i don't have a lot of practice doing and there's a contest coming up where we have to put hunter heel concave on feet. So i figured i'd share with you the process and progress from the method i used to try and improve my skills at making hunter heels. Basically i just focused on making the heel and then chop it...
French Hind Horseshoe w/ Masselot Clips Forged from 3/8x1

It's time to pick it back up and get into horseshoe practice mode! I decided to make a French Hind horseshoe in this video because it's on a few shoe lists of contests I'll be attending this summer. This shoe has a lot of forging tests within itself while you're building it. There's bumping or upsetting material, drawing out steel, forging straight steel to a round radius, tong and hammer contr...
Everyday Horseshoeing! Shoeing an Eventing Horse with Toe Clips

I take you along through my everyday horseshoeing and what entails on a basic shoeing job for a horse that I have been doing for multiple years. Initially I thought I was going to have to do new shoes but the fronts ended up being thick enough to reset and I did have to do new shoes on the hind feet though. Drop a comment if you would like to see more everyday shoeing content and/or the ins and...

    When I sharpen em I take a bunch off the cheeks especially toward the tip, I think that’s why they all say void once sharpened because to get them where a guy can use em you start getting em pretty quick. My grandpa said he wore the crook off one. 😂

    I use a round file from a chainsaw. The ones real nice, I like a whippy little left handed one, the crooked offset is neat.

    How important is tong position when doing that little trick?

    • @USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow
      @USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow Před 12 dny

      Pretty important as you have to hold strong the opposite branch and corner on the anvil for the bar to compress. Otherwise you’d be just shaping it loosely rather than compacting the bar.

    • @USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow
      @USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow Před 13 dny

      Not necessarily a cushion. It’s more like the heart of the foot. When loaded, it sends blood supply through the foot and limb. You don’t want to trim it too short because that can cause pain but you also don’t want to leave it excessively long either because it can lead to bacterial infections with crap not being able to clean out easily.

      I believe the study has been done before and the effects weren’t conducive. Titanium is very expensive and actually fairly difficult to forge or shape to fit a foot. And I think the study that tried it showed the shoes wore out just the same as mild steel but I could be mistaken. I’ll have to do some looking into that study again to see what it actually stated.

    Excellent video, Gavin. May I ask that in the next video in which you talk about aluminum shoes, you also talk about the reasons for their use, for the benefit of those of us who have a lot to learn about horses. Specifically about the pros and cons of aluminum as opposed to steel, and why the disciplines that favor them do so. I realize that they may be a few ounces lighter than steel, but does that difference affect the health or performance of an animal as powerful as a horse? Also, please tell, us in your opinion as a farrier, what issues will cause you to recommend for or against aluminum.
