    I've been looking for several months for a wiring video to explain how to run from existing power, to an outdoor light + outdoor receptacle, with two-way switches. Still haven't found exactly that setup but I'm hopeful!

    • @timpalmer-logstolumber1999
      @timpalmer-logstolumber1999 Před 2 dny

      Run a 12-2 from existing power to the switch box. From the switch box run a 12-3 to the second switch box. From second switch box run switch leg to the light. From first switch box run a 12-2 to the outlet. Make sure you use large single gang for first switch so all the wires fit. Ask question if you need more help.

      Since there is 100 square ft in a square and 3 bundles make a square. Each bundle covers covers about 33 square ft. So yes, you can take total square ft divide by 33 to get the number of bundles. Don't forget to add for waste.

    Just run the hot wire from the panel, or outlet to the switch box. It keeps it simple and clean in that all whites are common, no hot and all black are hot and switch legs. Why overcomplicate it and have all these non experienced people confused to what whit is for power. Keep it clean and simple with power to the switch box, then run the legs to the light boxes.

    For the mathematically challenged, just get a large roll of string. Lay out the string all around the future concrete perimeter making sure you are dead on (or slightly outside - but definitely not inside the future concrete area). When done, gather up the string and measure its length. Divide the string length by 4 to effectively turn the "curved" or "any random area" into a simple "square". Multiply side one (1/4 the string) by side 2 (1/4 the string) to get "area" of the "square". Multiply that number by the concrete thickness (example: .33 for 4 inch slab or .5 for 6 inch slab or ?/12 for any other depth) and divide that number by 27 (3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft = 27 for a cubic yard) to get the cubic yards of concrete needed. To check this method out, lets say the string measures 12 foot and you're pouring a 3 foot (OMG) slab. 12/4 = 3. ; 3*3=9 ; 9*3=27 ; 27/27=1 ; 1 Cubic Yard of concrete would be needed.

      @@timpalmer-logstolumber1999 Yeah and people don't realize how much work this will be taking a section of these walls out completely, so the ceiling runs all the way through, when a beam has to be added above the existing ceiling and the floor joust of the second floor has to be cut and this beam installed after 2 make-shift walls are standing first. I mean it is easy to say that is what they want, but when they see the bill before the work, they think we are trying to screw them over or something, and most homeowners are clueless about framing in general anyways so, yeah. But that don't stop them from wanting what they want.

    Tim, I don't care how crude your props are, your mind and talent are absolutely spot on. I suffered through a full day of youtube electricians focused on explaning the 3-way switch, always assuming a "normal" setup (power on one end and the light(s) on the other. You are the only one who called out the special challenge of having both the light and the power source on one end. When I opened up the switch box closest to the light, I was immediately confused by the fact the white wire was hot... Because you took the time (and smarts) to use the boxes as your orientating frame of reference.... and then added the wires (2 and 3 wire romex)....you had me well focused. When you started at the box for the switch down the line from the light, I was very skeptical. "How in the hell is this guy gonna handle the fact the white wire coming from the light/power source is "hot." Well, you brought that up and handled it very well where it would make sense.....when you were setting up the second switch box.....followed with a bit of information on power source and the light needs were to be handled in the round box. Since I can't see this setup, I took your word for it. I mmediately followed your directions step by step.....Starting with the switch box furthest down the line. Welll.................IT WORKED FIRST TIME I TRIED IT...... Not only are you an experienced electrician.....you have a knack for sensing what will be confusing for us not-good-at-DIY types and bring in "weird" stuff that fall out of line with black-wire, white--wire thinking. My appreciation and thanks for helping bring a bad day to an end with a great success!!!! Frank
