Can you dead head this plant for further blooming? Mine looked amazing for about a month.
I've tried but never had much luck.
Thanks for doing this and giving a good idea of what you did to get these results. I value this
You are very welcome.
Does this grow in Texas? I live in deep south texas on the Rio Grande River.
It is listed for zones 4-8. If your growing zone is higher than 8, then no. Google USDA hardiness zone. Put in your address to check
I love this video discussing the beauty of native wildflowers! I have some in my yard that I tried to show off to my family, but they just called them weeds. I may send them this video.
Thank you for the kind words. And I would really appreciate any sharing of it!
This is so cool! I cant believe our ancestors left this! Is this all going to work in the desert climates? I just moved to a new house and they had grass but it was neglected and full of crab grass and weeds so i killed it off and im not sure what to do with it yet.. I have to research how to start that grass over… but i dont know of we have worms? Can something be used besides grass?
👍🏻
Thank you!
my favourite plant. They are monsterously impressive at full bloom. I dont find them to be "aggressive". They just do really well. I even hack back some of mine when they get a couple ft tall. They regrow and bloom a little later and less so. They dont get as big. I feed the cut stalks to my rabbits. They relish the roughage apparently
That is cool that your rabbits enjoy them. I transplanted a couple of mine last year. Was crazy caring a 3' diameter rootstalk, but they survived and are shooting up right now as we speak. I do find that they can be aggressive self-seeding, but I just manage that the normal way.
Can you transplant them after they’ve flowered and gone to seed?
I haven't personally, but if the seed capsules are brown/dry, then you probably could. Just try to keep as much soil attached to the roots, keep it in the shade for a few days (put a chair over it), and keep it watered.
Does it matter if it rains alot? Say a month straight
Probably not in the grand scheme of things. Just try to go turn it periodically to reaerate the pile.
Is it just me or are these the slowest growing seedlings ever?
Hi - if your seedlings seem stunted then try moving them to a larger pot and thinning them.
Genuine question I see cats in my neighborhood and stuff like that. Well, I have to worry about them using the bathroom in the compost pile. I don’t think that would be any good but I really don’t know. My instinct tells me it’s not a good thing to happen. Thank you for the video and trying to keep stuff simple man.
Hi - from what I've read, cat/dog waste can contain a parasite that can be harmful to humans. And it needs to get to something like 165F to be killed, which most compost piles can't reach (and you don't want them to anyways). So, you wouldn't want cats around. That being said, if the cats already use your garden as a litterbox, then I'm not sure if them peeing on the compost would be that much different, marginally at least.
Thanks for the video, I have Mels books and I am about to start his S/F garden. but its is very costly to buy the components. Mulch vermiculite and compost. I am going to try your method for compost to save some $$$$, My question is can I use the wood ash from my bonfires in the compost pile.
Hi - you can use wood ash as an ingredient in the compost pile. - good luck!
Perfect I'm definitely gonna grow it.
You are welcome - it is an interesting plant
Thanks for sharing!! Will be using this for reference while I try to grow mine! (:
You are welcome -good luck getting started
My favorite insect ever ❤
They are amazing. My backyard hosts a lot of them!
So compost Is worm shit 🤔
Sometimes......they only clean up the last things that hadn't broken down
I seen them white too on road side. And it smells awful....
Interesting - I know of a white Monarda, and am growing some. Although I haven't had it bloom yet
What is the name of the book you mentioned in the video?
Bringing Nature Home by Doug Tallamy
Thank you! Great videos!
I get lawn treatments about every 4-6 weeks. Could I use the grass clippings from my lawn or should I avoid it because of the weed killers and fertilizers they spread?
Hi - I would avoid using your grass clippings. This is mostly out of an abundance of caution, as some pesticides can persist for a very long time. Look to other sources like coffee grounds from starbucks - I've made hot piles in Fall just using their used coffee grounds (15-20 bags is enough).
@@growitbuilditgood to know! Appreciate the response. Thank you!!!
Deadheading 5:14...this is for me for quick reference. Great video! 😊
You are very welcome. Coreopsis benefits with a bit of deadheading to completely rejuvenate itself.
Hey there,I have just come across your video while researching how to collect the seeds of these beautiful flowers..I live in England..This is the first year I have grown them properly,I didn't realise you grow the seeds & the first year you just get the leaves(I let mine die off the first time because they didn't flower how I thought they would, what donut lol)..Anyway this year I actually grew them to there full potential & they flowered,I wasn't expecting them to be as beautiful as they were, when they flowered they were beautiful, but then they flowered properly & they were absolutely stunning, the curves to the flowers are just beautiful..I am hoping I can either collect the seeds or they will self seed, but I need to put them in a bigger tub to make sure I collect them in the soil, instead of loosing them in the grass.. I fed them this year with some blood fish & bone & some chicken manure pellets,I didn't go mad, just a bit & they look amazing,I have fell in love with this flower..just wished I lived in America so I could watch all the little hummingbird..Great video, thankyou for putting in the effort to make the video & share your knowledge,it is greatly appreciated🤘🏻☮🤘🏻☮
Hi - thank you so much for the kind words, and congrats on getting them to flower! These are amazing flowers - their structure and architecture are amazing. They really do put on a beautiful display, and for quite some time! You'll be able to save the seed - no problem. Just watch for the capsules to turn light brown and collect them. The seed just falls right out.
Thanks. Excellent review. Clear, comprehensive and knowledgeable.
You are very welcome. I'm glad you found it helpful!
I wonder if I can plant this directly into soil in June?
Yes, you can easily transplant in June. Just make sure it gets some regular watering.
Outstanding tutorial thank you !!!
You are very welcome!
I had an app and every time I scanned one of my plants... every time it was a " philodendron".!!!! App sux
That would be frustrating!
Fun to watch. I need to get rid of a whole ugly row of nandina/barberry (((what were the landscapers thinking???))) I am not about to get my 64-year old self (female w/arthritic hands and knees) out there and do what I just watched you do. 😂 But, for someone physically able, this was a straightforward instructional video. Still, not sure the barberry would allow you to get all up in its business. Lol
Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed it even if you've got to many shrubs to handle yourself! Hopefully they do come out easily. I plan on taking out a 20' tall Chinese Holly later this summer.....that will be a good test!
Great video and some fantastic tips 👍👍👍
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful
Can You put dog Poo un the compost??
That often has parasites that need very high temps to kill. So, you shouldn't add dog or cat feces/litter to compost.
@@growitbuildit thanks a lot
Super informative, very easy to understand. Good job Thank you
Thank you - I'm glad you found it helpful. Good luck starting your pile!
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: (Acts 17:30) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. (Psalms 51:1-4)
I just did this to all my asters. Thanks for showing the differences Joe!
You are very welcome - glad you found it helpful!
I don’t have sawdust or Amazon packages, would sticks and Bark work and what would be the best way of processing them without a wood chipper
In my experience, any stick or piece of wood that is thicker than 1/8" (3 mm), it usually takes a really long time to break down. If you ask at a big-box store, they probably have a cardboard dumpster that they would allow you to take from.
My bergamot has flopped over. We did have a storm that blew down trees recently. If I prop it up, will it start holding itself up after a while?
I honestly don't know, as each situation is different. In the past, when this has happened to me, once it flops, it is flopped. You might be able to stake/trim it a bit, then remove the stake a week or two later.
Watched your video on compost 6/9/24. I don't have grass clippings. What's the next best thing for the green portion? I have access to coffee grounds, will that work?
Coffee grounds for sure. Many Starbucks give them away for free. You will need to accumulated 15-20 of their silver bags of grounds to make a pile that can heat up.
4:14 interesting, I had some creep across the fence from my neighbors, not sure if that was rhizomes or seeds
Based on my experience, it was most likely seeds.
Best composting video so far. You make it so easy
Thank you! It takes some work, but is completely doable.
How long does it take to show signs it's working? Could I reapply the next day or a week later to give it extra incentive? I have a big Bradford pear stump and need to make sure it doesn't come back.
Hi - wait 1-2 weeks. If regrowth occurs, cut the stump again and reapply. You must have a fresh cut to be effective.
This is JUST what I'm looking for. You have so many natives I want. Do you ship to Canada?
You are very welcome. Sorry - but as of now I do not sell plants.
The diagonal version is brilliant!
It is very effective too!
Being so short-lived I'm actually going to try and see what happens if it self-seeds. Mine get sun only about 4hs a day and is gloriously tall! Under a blue fir tree, I guess it's moist enough. Zone 5 here in Quebec, with heavy snow
You can easily help it self seed, and should. Just squeeze a few capsules and let the seed fall.
Great video! Just FYI - The indication of neurotoxicity is primarily from the skin and seeds. Pawpaw can contain high concentrations of annonacin, which is toxic to cortical neurons. You would have to eat a lot or eat the skin and seeds. The bark extract induced an allergic reaction in Guinea pigs. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22130466/
Does it cool off eventually when the material is broken down?
Hi, yes it does.
Great video! Very helpful and I will definitely use this info next year 😊 Unfortunately I did a very aggressive chop on my coreopsis about 2 weeks ago. They had bloomed beautifully but then got hit by several heavy rains and had flopped horribly. I thought about staking them but they were too heavy and overgrown I chopped them back almost to the ground thinking they would re-grow Their stocks have turned brown. Do you think I’ve killed them?
Hi - it is possible that they have died, as that is similar to a rabbit mowing them down. It is best to always leave 1-2 sets of leaves so the plant can regenerate via photosynthesis.
Thanks for the answer. Nothing like learning the hard way 😢
Can u use torpedo grass that continually pops up in my mulched areas. Thanks. Great video
Hi - yes, as long as your pile gets hot it can kill the grass.
This explains why the milkweed I grew in my loose "foresty" soil put out leaves so fast, even though the water drained right through the pot. Meanwhile the milkweed I grew in more compacted bag soil took a bit. Thank you! I'll probably carefully repot the latter into the same looser soil.
You are welcome. Just be as gentle as possible with the taproot!
I heard that. Longtime gardener but new subscriber, always learning and your topics hit close to home (being just South of you). Going back through your catalog and looking forward to new videos. Best!
Thank you so much! Hope you enjoy the older videos!
Please do not use a shovel. Use a spade. Look at a deck of cards to know what a spade looks like.
I've noticed leafcutter bees (which I introduced into my property) prefer redbuds for their building material. The leaves of several trees look like someone has taken a hole punch to the edges of hundreds of leaves.
I love seeing that.
I've noticed those distinct round cuts too
Thank you so much im learning
You are very welcome!
