I was glad they didn't explain whyyy America was having a civil war, any american knows its possible IRL, so I thought it was best to leave it ambiguous. All the actors played their roles excellently

  • @jaypaladin-havesmartswilll5508

    Many people can't see Texas and California as allies in a civil war. But, take a look at WWII allies and study the politics within California, then you could imagine how these two states could be allies each vying to become their own country.

    As I read some of these comments I want to say shout to everyone that wrote something decent about this series, but one thing that I hate is a negative critic. People are always stating what they don't like in this world that they can't do. If you want a movie done EXACTLY how you want to see it, then raise some money and do it yourself. O wait, but then someone would tell you how garbage your movie was.

    I liked the series. It's a loose adaptation but captures the spirit of the novel particularly the impact of the Cultural Revolution on Li Wenjie's actions. The first five episodes were strong and helped capture the main thread of events in the Three Bodies novel. Hope it gets renewed for more seasons.

    I like the Chinese version better- Please don’t get me wrong I’m not a prude I use the F word myself however Netflix has the characters say F**k at least 30 times in each episode- So that’s like once every two minutes- It’s a great word to use when needed but when you use it too much and it’s overdone it sounds stupid lol

    great start to the series. However, it continues the trend of impossibly smart girl bosses dominating movies and series. It also suffers from aother common trope nowadays: zero young white male charachters. The only two being one who gets killed off early and another dying from cancer. Its telling how diversity is a one way street and inclusive for only some.

    • @TheNerdSocial
      @TheNerdSocial Před 2 měsíci

      You've come to the wrong channel to lodge this particular complaint, and it's unfortunate that you see reality and equality as a personal assault on you. Here are a few things to consider if someone wants to complain about the show on the opposite side of the spectrum of your point of view: This show is based on the works of author Liu Cixin, who is Chinese. All but one (Thomas Wade) of the main characters in his books are Chinese. So, someone could complain that having so many non-Chinese people in the cast is a perversion of his work. The second point is that race and gender are socially constructed, but if I wanted to focus on those people in the cast who you identify as white males, they are overrepresented in this cast compared to their proportion in the real world. "White" men are a minority on the planet, and this is a planetary-scale story, yet they are represented by three of the main characters in the series. No other racial-gender pairing has as much representation in this cast, even though they are a minority. Someone might rightly ask why that is the case. I will say of the 14 main characters in the books, eight are male (57%); however, in the show of the 12 main characters, six are male (50%), so it is equal in the show. So, I guess technically, you could complain about it being more equal than the book. If equality was a thing you wanted to complain about.

    Maybe off topic but I don't think you understand the Israeli position as much as you think but I'm glad you're trying (has more to do with Oct7th, which was more devastating to Israel then 9/11 was to the United States)

    • @TheNerdSocial
      @TheNerdSocial Před 2 měsíci

      Anyone from the team can respond to comments here, but this is Nathanial. Since I mentioned it, I have opened up to discussing this topic. I understood on Oct 7th very well. It's the subsequent weeks that made it difficult to understand. The episode that I mentioned helped me understand the situation back then better. It's been months, and as I said in the video, while I disagree with the Israeli position today, it helped me understand where they were coming from then. On Oct 27th, 1,200 died, which is horrific. Recent estimates are that 30,000 people in Gaza have died, Which have no words for. 30,000 isn't a fringe estimate, by the way. It's likely an underestimate. This number is reported in places like Time.com, which isn't known for communicating the nuance of situations and would historically just be an amplifier of the Israeli position: time.com/6909636/gaza-death-toll/

    Great review. Fair and thoughtful. I just can't get invested in a show made by those two right now, I don't trust them. I'm interested, your review makes me cautiously hopeful, so I'll keep an eye on it from the outside, see how it goes. Maybe I can give it a go at some point. That's if it even gets renewed, of course, we all know Netflix. I'm generally reluctant to watch any of their ongoing shows that doesn't have at least two seasons out already anyways, but with D&D involved I think it's gonna have to be pretty much done, and with overwhelmingly positive reception throughout, before I feel ready to give it a go lol. We'll see.

    "The Three-Body Problem" has been one of the most thought-provoking pieces of media I've encountered. The notion that aliens could render our scientific knowledge obsolete, revealing our vulnerability and insignificance before a superior power, is truly unsettling. However, it's also inspiring in a way-it reminds us that the petty issues we grapple with daily pale in comparison of the movement of civilizations. This revelation, in turn, circles back on itself in an excellent, and perhaps intentional, manner. It highlights how the lofty ambitions of movements like communism, or indeed any civilization's actions, can easily overshadow an individual's life and destroy it.

    I saw the whole season and it is good. I love sci-fi on screen but not a fan of sci-fi books because the books usually focus on the science rather than the characters. So moving on to the future seasons, I don't think it will be good because there will be so much more happening in space and way more techy things that I dont think the producers can afford to make them unless they make changes and make this more character driven than like the books which do not care about the characters. Plus Netflix might not green light it for another season unless it gets watched by lots of people. We shall see.

    I saw it arrived in my theater last week, so watched the trailer and was sold when the woman said "your thesis is flawed" as I wanted to see if Isabel could prove the woman wrong. I saw it Tuesday and was the only one in the theater (not unusual after 10 PM on a weeknight) but it hasn't been doing much business all week. Probably because there are 3 other movies out geared for a Black audience: _The Color Purple, The Book of Clarence_ a comedy that turns into a redemption story (excellent),_ and _American Fiction_ which was sold as a comedy but turned out to be a family tragedy and had a disjointed ending (so-so). _Origin's_ last day in my theater is Wednesday (today). I thought the beginning was messed up, not because of the film or cinematography, but because we're introduced to a young Black man in peril and they cut away before it's resolved and I don't remember them saying it's Trayvon Martin. It took 15 minutes or so for the movie to get back on track while I was using my phone and thinking of leaving. It takes a lot longer to get back to this man's murder. As an idea or discovery film it then does that part pretty well from then on, and she makes a good case for caste being the origin or basis of racism, discrimination and murder. I didn't read the book, _Caste: The Origins of our Discontent_ but apparently the ideas on the dry-erase board are her 8 pillars supporting caste, some strong, others malleable. My only other complaint is that Isabel's mother says something about a Little League game that I didn't catch, but we only follow up on that near the end of the film, and find the author missed interviewing the grown man by a couple years, who as a Black boy couldn't swim in the community pool. So who was he in relation to her mother?

    Misfire propaganda. If some novels are "unfilmable" this is more so.

      no need to say sorry. Just not a good movie. Filmmakers (?) today don't know how to tell a story and never learned the art of subtlety.@@TheNerdSocial

      LOL I'm a cinephile of the 20th century. Have you NEVER read how some books are "unfilmable"??? This is one of them. So the screenwriter(s) had to improvise a lot. As a narrative, it is terrible. As for its "message," is nothing but post_Modernist crap. Yeah, "Selma" was a good movie, but "13" was very narrow in its scope and woke. I'm not impressed with DuVarney. @@kmurray559

      We are working on a more spoiler follow-up to this review and our reviews for "The Color Purple" and "American Fiction." The problem is that no one watches conversations we post that are 45 minutes or longer because none of us have the public profile of Joe Rogan or Howard Stern, who can go on for hours. Even if people did watch, editing a review like this one for "Origin," which is only 8 minutes long, takes a few hours. It takes the better part of two days to finish and edit a video that is an hour long, and we all have other jobs (some of us have more than one other job). The thought right now is to do a 30-minute video answering questions and getting into the spoiler details of prestige Black films from 2023. Maybe when we grow, we'll do something like Patreon and have those deep-dive, hours-long conversations for subscribers.
