    WW1 has interested me for a long time. At first it was a chance to study how the world and technology changed. Then I realized that I studied, and still do study it, for another reason. While I am grateful that I will never see WW1 trench warfare, the spirit of the WW1 vets inspires me as a person who is alive in 2023. Recently I found myself in a hostile work environment. It seems to be hopeless. It continues on, but is getting better. The example of the WW1 vets who willingly entered the trenches knowing that it could be boring, busy and uneventful, full on combat, or being part of a major offensive did not matter to them helped me. They had a job to do and did it. Simple as that. That idea resonates with me a century and some years later. I am lucky to never be able to know how bad it was. Yet the example that was set for me has benefited me immensely. May we never forget their sacrifice.

    The US casualty rate in WW1 was most definitely not higher than the US casualty rate in WW2.... Where on earth did the researcher for this video get that statistic from!!? 🤔🙄 'Lies, damn lies and statistics!!!'

    • @DoughboyFoundation
      @DoughboyFoundation Před 8 měsíci

      Hi Don: You do point out a problem with statistics. And I suspect the comment was made for shock value especially since it SEEMS untrue. But in context it is true: In absolute numbers, U.S. military deaths in World War II were significantly higher than in World War I, with approximately 291,557 deaths in WWII compared to approximately 116,516 in WWI. (and one could historically argue those numbers as well) However, when you consider the length of U.S. involvement, the United States was engaged in World War I for about 19 months (April 1917 to November 1918) and World War II for about 45 months (December 1941 to September 1945). Despite the longer involvement in WWII, the average monthly death rate was higher in WWI due to the shorter involvement and the high number of deaths, particularly when considering combat-related deaths. Another way to look at the casualty rate is in the context of the total force deployed. The U.S. deployed over 4 million military personnel during WWI and over 16 million during WWII. The proportion of deaths to the number of service members deployed was higher in WWI. Finally, the casualty rate in relation to the total population can provide insight. The population of the United States was smaller during WWI, meaning the deaths constituted a higher percentage of the total U.S. population compared to WWII. In summary, while WWII had more absolute deaths, the death rate during U.S. involvement in WWI was higher when considering the shorter duration of the conflict and the smaller military force and population size at the time. Kind regards Theo

    Sabaton played this video as an opening to their 2022 American concerts. There is the live Houston concert where it's easier to see and hear this video before Sabaton plays. Other versions are harder to see and hear because the audience was yelling and clapping. One of the strangest moments was when "American resolve had won the war" and it shows crowds of people celebrating the end of the war, looking right into the camera, making eye contact with the Sabaton crowd over 100 years later. It was like a time travel, where the audience could cheer with the WW1 people. For this moment, it was easy to be proud of what the WW1 Dough Boys did, easy to be proud to be American.

    Thanks for posting this. This bugle is a French Bb Clairon (Bugle) used by Army buglers following WWI. General John "Blackjack" Pershing ordered these to replace the small M1894 bugles. They were used by the Army up until WWII and replaced by the M1982 Field Trumpet in G. The bugle call is called "To The Color" Not Colors. Bugle calls are sounded, not played. Also I find it dumb that you would receive a copyright claim on a public domain bugle call played live by an Army bugler. -Jari Villanueva, TapsBugler.com

      Alfred: Thanks for the comment. I appreciate what you are saying. I am not actually a historian, but I did host our podcasts for 150 episodes about WWI and had a chance to talk to many wonderful experts on the subject. Things are never tidy and clear... however, I think the reference in this script is about how Woodrow Wilson took America into this war believing that the imperialist ambitions of the Kaiser threatened freedom and democracy. France was our historic ally in our own struggles to escape monarchy in favor of Democracy (ironically against the UK). Kaiser Wilhelm's empire was cutting side deals with Mexico if they would open up a front to our South. So it can be fairly be said that freedom and Democracy were threatened. What do you think? All true but it was worse than that. It was a direct fallout from WWI... A lot of African American men volunteered to serve in WWI but the Army was segregated. Two notable units distinguished themselves Chicago's 370th and New York's 369th in particular. These men came home having done their duty - having fought and sacrificed - having been treated as equals by the French - only to come back to the US and be asked to go back under Jim Crow. When they stood up to that - there was violent reaction and it resulted in some of the most horrific and terrible riots ever... Check out the book called "The Harlem Rattlers" by two historians named Dr. Jeffrey Sammons and Dr. John Morrow. John was my guest on this episode.
