In this video you will see seashells typical of a rocky New England coast. There were dog winkles, common periwinkles, rough periwinkles, smooth periwinkles, horse mussels and blue mussels. We also found slipper snail shells and beautiful beach pebbles. The crab carapace I found was from a green cab and not a rock crab. There is a lot more to explore at Odiorne point and it is well worth a visit!

    Wow, excellent video! Never seen egg casings before, and love that they are called Mermaid Necklace, so sweet. And those horseshoe crab shells are awesome! How do you think they ended up as shells on the beach? Do gulls prey on such a large creature? I also appreciate that you return live animals to the water. 💙

    • @j.roach-evans1010
      @j.roach-evans1010 Před 4 měsíci

      A lot of the horseshoe crab carapaces are just molts. They shed their shell as they grow. Some may die due to old age and they wash up on shore. The gulls may feed on them then but I don't believe they actually can kill them unless they get turned on their backs and can't right themselves. The gulls eat a lot of smaller crabs though like the green crabs. Thanks for watching and commenting! Shore life is so interesting!

      I was just doing a quick search and ended up on a Mass.gov article that said" DMF considers channeled whelk to be depleted throughout their range within the waters under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth. A 2018 stock assessment of channeled whelk within Nantucket Sound showed this resource to be overfished with overfishing occurring." That is probably why I do not find many of them there....but still not sure about the knobbed in Long Island Sound. I'll keep looking!

I find both kinds on the jersey shore and they seem to both be equally common until you get to the outer banks where the more tropical shells replace them. Honestly you must be the Virgin Mary of shells. Went there today to find some sand dollars as I heard you came find them there. Came to a beach COVERED in rocks. The name sandy neck is VERY deceiving. Seaweed and firewood littered the beach. There were even a couple dead rotting seagulls. Yuck! Didn't even find a slipper shell which shocked me! Also didn't find any sand dollars or any shells besides some fish bones and some surf clams. Is there a beach on the inlet side of the peninsula? Just love the peek at the beach! I'm so hungry for the sand under my toes, the surf in my ears and a treasure in my pocket! Thank you for helping me last a little longer before making my own trek to the ocean!

    I can't wait for it to get warm again so I can go back to Plum Island to hunt more shells & sea glass. :)

      Me too Jenn P! Although I often can't wait for summer....I like to go on the warmest days of winter/spring/fall - because there's lots to find especially after a storm. Just wear lots of layers : )

    You need to create a little toy oracle of all the things you've found on the beach!
