Sorry if anyone has said. What boat is that? Looks like a Beneteau or similar. Not going to be a great advert for the anti ‘production boat’ lobby. I am guessing no skeg? Also the great thing with a Hydrovane is a second rudder with an emergency tiller.

Big ocean racing events have required tested backup rudder systems for the racers. Loosing a rudder happens more than most people realize. Especially in big ocean crossings. There have been several good cruising boats lost due to broken rudder tubes- with flooding and or just broken rudders. This isn’t a criticism its a suggestion that cruisers look at what racers have developed for rudder solutions and adapt something and test it in rough conditions before doing big crossings. If you need it you’ll be very happy you had it. If you don’t need it you’ll be very happy knowing you had it if you needed it.

WOW I cried the entire video. I know the feeling me; my boyfriend and dog lost our Newport mkii 30 ELECTRA which sank after 3 days on.09/25/23 crew saved by Coast Guards. We lived and sailed our boat since 2013 fulltime on anchorage. Our boat ended up at Sunset Cliffs and lost mast, keel and flipped sideways. We had PTSD after and so sad to lose everything we owned. Luckily our families have taken us in until we can rebuild. I just had shoulder surgery. 10/11.23 to repair a bicep tear, dislocated, fractured shoulder. It's in our blood, we will be back to sailing once again & we to had so many great memories and even more learning experiences over the years. Lessons learned keep inventory of everything onboard and have full boat replacement coverage and renters' insurance to cover our personal items. When you sail a boat every day, she becomes a part of you. She is now part of mother nature and a new fish aquarium in the sea. Our boat had a recent surveyor replacement value $189,000 and everything inside at least $50,000. Priceless to us and we left with only our lifejackets.
