Regarding practising: I also work crazy hours, but making time to practise is a priority for me - I average 6 hours a week at the moment. (Sometimes less when I need to travel for work..) Realistically, if you can commit to 4 hours every week, you should see some good progress. I have a lesson every 2 - 3 weeks.

Tinker, thanks for the nice comments! The piece is a Dotzhauzer study from Feuillard's 'La Technique du Violoncelle' volume 1. I quite like most of the Dotzhauzer studies - they're very musical. Yes, piano knowledge would definitely help you - it will make a huge difference if you can already read music! Then you can focus on learning to play the cello, and not divide your learning attention. I've played piano for most of my life, and it definitely makes the initial progress faster.

you know? Do you think old piano knowledge will be of any help at all? Do you play any other instruments? Also, you put in a fair few hours. I work long hours. How much time would I realistically have to practice to make some sort of nice sound? How many lessons have you had? What are the minimum hours you'd recommend for lessons and practice? Sorry to bombard you with questions! I came across your videos and the sound is beautiful.

What is this piece? It's beautiful, you play it really well. I have decided in the last few days that I would like to learn how to play the cello. My partner used to play as a child and has an old cello, and I've been looking for a new hobby. I played piano as a child/teen but just sort of drifted away from it and haven't really played for the last 10 years (27 now). I'd like to, but I know how much hard work it is and I feel like I need to learn something new, not refresh something new,
