I admire Chris Reeve's honesty. He couldn't be more right. Dick Donner even said Brando tried to talk him into letting him just do a voiceover for Jor-El while they showed an image of an alien lifeform. Brando didn't even bother to memorize his lines. Everyone on set said he had them all written on notecards taped up just out of camera view. Brando wanted to phone in his performance by that time and that's what he did.

I love this film. I agree with you that the emotional intensity comes from believing in the reality of the love between Sam and Molly. And by the way Dirty Dancing is phenomenal. To see Patrick Swayze's dancing is reason enough to watch it. I hope that you do.

Stoltz is a method actor and he gave way too much intensity for role than was required fot the role. He was just not right for the role, the stills show the massive differences in the overall feel for each scene. Take nothing away from him being a fine actor, but it was like having Arnie playing Ghandi

This explains why Marty is this wannabe rock star in the movie. Michael J Fox doesn’t jive with that AT ALL and it never made sense to me. He seems out of place. Stoltz though, he definitely has that kind of look. Makes much more sense. Obviously Fox did a tremendous job, I just felt like he never really had the vibe of a wannabe 80s rock star.

I'd say Stoltz is a more realistic Marty
