126. Norfolk Railways Trip - A FLIRTraintion at Wymondham Station
At the start of the year (2024), Steve Bateman, John Harman & myself got together at Steve’s farmhouse in deepest Buckinghamshire to plan a year of expanding our railway visit horizons. We wanted to visit a few interesting heritage railways, other than our usual couple of visits each year to the Blubell Railway in Sussex.
One of the venues / area that matched our combined calendar availability (but sadly not Steve) was a few days at the start of July to visit Mid & North Norfolk heritage railways.
John knew the various heritage railways reasonably well, but started by taking us both to have a look at the still mainline active Wymondham Station on the Breckland Line. The station also had a nice café & a toilet, but they are both now in private hands, not official station facilities.
Other Norfolk Railways Trip videos to follow.
Starring :
• Wymondham Station on the BR Breckland Line.
• Greater Anglia - Stadler Rail - FLIRT Bi-mode Multiple Unit Train - BR Class 755/4 (4 = four carriages & four 19 litre V8 engines) - No. 755 410
FLIRT = Fast, Light, Intercity & Regional Train).
Also Featuring :
• The branch line junction to the heritage Mid Norfolk Railway.
Venue :
• Wymondham Station, Wymondham, Norfolk, England.
Filming :
• Camera - Sony Xperia 1 II (Mk2) smartphone.
Video creation :

However, their new date standard I have adopted. Computers organise and list things much better with the most constant number first (the year) and the most variable numbers last (31 days). The spec is ISO 8601 (Google it), so the USA is also expected to adopt it as yyyy-mm-dd. In a global business world, we all need to have some things standardised, and dates are quite important. So no more nonsense of 9/11 which is really 11/9 i.e. the 11th September not the 9th November.

    Hi, I was thinking about getting a tap like this. In the past, I have put a shut-off valve in my kitchen, so as soon as the cold weather comes, I switch the valve to off. Run the tap outside to empty the water from it. If I do this with this kind of tap, will It be ok.

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking Před 2 měsíci

      The two internal valves are spring loaded and only open with water pressure. So when the outside tap is turned off, water will remain between the two valves (this is the problem when it freezes). Turning off an internal shut off valve won't empty this trapped water I'm afraid. It's a design flaw. Only by removing the outermost of the internal valves (or preferably both valves) will help protect the tap from freezing water expanding ice damage. Then yes, your idea would work.

    Hi, great video content, the Hornby 21pin HST Railadventure set has an cyclops light in the roof as well, I like what you’ve done with the cab, maybe Hornby should have done the same thing, I don’t like that you can see the wheel bogie units through the front screen, I’d like to get a cover of some description to hide it and wire independent cab lighting to the power car end with the driver in at some stage, I’m sure I saw a seller on eBay selling highly detailed cab interiors for all sorts of locomotives, thanks for sharing.

      @andrewdking Před 4 měsíci

      With 3D printers, there are all sorts of people making specialist detail items. A cab interior is quite probable. This model and its carriages are meant to be new tooling, so there are a few things Hornby should have done but didn't. If you look at my kitchen car window video of this train, not only did they get that window wrong, but its interior is all wrong and they should have at least painted the white topped tables.

      I've just turned the machine upside down. There are 20 spring tines all clamped together in opposite pairs along a square drive shaft. This assembly is termed as a Cylinder. I suspect it could be disassembled and just the Tines replaced. The Instruction Manual though only lists the Raking and Scarifying Cylinders as spare parts. The Raking Cylinder assy is part number WR6002-1500-202.

    Just to let you know, hosepipe taps requires a double check valve, this now has a single check valve, therefore non compliant. I've had the same issue with these tap many times, I now remove the check valves and fit an inline double check valve internally. Wish they made them without the non return valves built in as an internal - inline double check valve is a much better solution. All outside taps with built in check valves seem to fail after a few years, as you say due to the ice expanding within them. Thanks for the video, all the best. F

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking Před 4 měsíci

      The check valves are also on the hose connector. However, non-compliant or not, it's my house, so my choice. I run a powerful pressure washer. It needs high water flow and all these valves reduce the pipe bore, restricting flow, so I'm quite pleased I discovered one had to go.

    I don't get it, you're working with outdated enamel paints that super dangerous for your health, and totally is obsolete , you really should look up the technical data sheets for these paints. And this is where tutorial like this make me a bit angry, if you don't care about your health that's your choice, but you're showing this as a tutorial to the public, to people that are unaware of this. Only the fumes this tiny tin spreads in your working environment are super toxic, not even taking in consideration the drying fumes of your subject. I've been modeling for more than 50 year and I also grew up with this rubbish as most of did. Until 15 years ago I did a serious investigation into this stuff, it can causes cancer and all sorts of nasty things, so why set yourself open to this danger, and this for our hobby? All my stuff went to the recycling park as dangerous toxic waste, even the brand new unused tins, and there it should belong. And I don't know if you're aware of this, but Humbrol was forced to stop product of this rubbish, and now are producing harmless 1000x better water based paints, that do the same trick even better. The biggest problem the industrie has, is that millions of these cans are in stock with retailers, and of corse for them the sooner they can get rid of them, the better. There are so many better alternatives, that are 100X better then enamel paints, that work so much better, are even special developed for this purpose of figure painting, it's all a question of getting out of your comfort zone and adapt. I use the acrylic Andrea figure painting sets, odorless, quick, nice almost Matt finish, easy dosage bottel, very easy to correct, your life time of your brushes go far beyond and of corse the most important, not a tread to your health, so there is no reason to put your self in danger. And yes it is an investment, model paints aren't cheap, but if I tell you that I painted more than 100 figures, and my paint bottels that I first bought 15 years ago are still not empty, paint is still stable, is it expensive then? Think about it…

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks for your concerns there Danny. A heart for your efforts, not for putting me down. I'm not sure going all health and safety is a major concern for our hobby with the comparatively tiny amounts of oil based paint used. I'm in aerospace and they have to use the very best of all types of substances based upon performance. Aircraft are painted in 2-part epoxy paint, not acrylic FYI and I have written specifications on how to apply it. The European Reach chemical controls are though causing havoc, which affects the Chromates used in the acid etch primer I use (only because I've got loads of it and it accepts any other paint type). That is indeed highly toxic BUT is the best paint of its type. No substitute is better. Most of the other replacement substances concocted are very second rate. I very much doubt acrylic can outperform a quality enamel. They seem to dry too quickly, so don't flow nicely. Yes, they would be ideal for figures painting but risky for achieving the ultimate smooth finish on expensive rolling stock. Go check out my gloss varnishing of carriages video No.076 and read the comments. I very much doubt any water based paint can achieve that finish by hand brushing. I like quality of finish and when painting my house, I only used Dulux Trade Gloss. Now their water based paint are nowhere near as good, probably why the matt/ satin finish is peddled as the current trendy finish. I think it's because they can no longer achieve the perfect gloss finish any more. I could achieve the same finish you see on the door of No.10 Downing Street ! So, I'm saying from a finish point of view, enamel oil based paints are the best for brush applications. So 1000x better, I doubt they are on par, all performance criteria being taken into account based upon the amateur use market i.e. us. Let's see you try using a lining pen filled with acrylic paint 🤣 If it's fumes you are worried about, it's the adhesives used to make the plastic kits that are dangerous, more so than white spirit. I'm pretty sure Humbrol are still making enamel paints. During the Pandemic Lockdown I was in correspondence with them and they wanted to know if I was interested in trials for new enamel paints being reformulated. I notice this video now has a 👎 against it. Was that you 😞 ?

      @@andrewdking Hi Andrew, I think we got of on a wrong foot here, and yes the 👎 was me, and I apologize, I did go to far there, it was not on your work, it was on the enamel paints thing that upsets me so. I just turned it around too 👍, but that's for your work😉. I studied as old school graphic designer (no computers in the 80's), helpt IG farben with the development of water based silkscreen paints, I can tell you, I know quite a bit about paints. later became a train driver instructor but that's an other story. The thing is, I really don't understand why you still protect oil based paints. I still stand with my point there is totally no need for oil based paints anymore. And you have maybe a well ventilated room, but I've seen lot's of hobbyists work in some very tiny work spaces with no air flow. I wish I could show you a photo of my painted figures, no oil paints seen in miles, the only thing I use are acrylic paints, acrylic inks, water color pencils, pigment powders and water based flat acrylic varnish. As for your coaches, the paintwork, I looked at it, is very well executed, you know how to handle a brush, but I'm not keen on high gloss coaches, but that's my taste. And if it's an opinion about taste, I normally keep it to myself, because that's a freedom of choice, but you advised me to look at it, and react, so that's my idea. I do the opposite with a flat varnish, also acrylic paint from Xtracrylix varnishes, no problem, even with their gloss varnish, but we must also mention, like you preformed, you have to know how to handle a brush and have quality material. But that aside and before you're going to say, these coaches are in reality gloss, I 100% agree But there is something as the down scaling effect, it's not something I invented. There is a very good, rather, old book now, written by I think it was US model producer Verlinden(don't even know if they still exist) at the time, specializes in plastic models, painting, etc., and it's about how your eye interpers color and finish in down scaling. It come down to, what gloss is in scale 1:1 is becomes flatter the smaller the scaling is, as is also the light intensity of color changes. And there are charts in this book, really interesting. But in the end it's a choice of taste, and we can debate endless on the subject. So Andrew I hope we're on a good page again. And as I sad somewhere else, if our discussion really bothers you, I delete everything, but I think civilized discussion must be possible…

      @@dannyvanstraelen3273 I'm quite happy to converse with you. You seem to know your stuff and I know a lot of stuff also. I like others to learn from my knowledge. Yes, I was told gloss doesn't scale down too well, but that may have been true with the toy like models of the past, but the gloss I use really brings the carriages to life, lifting the dull matt to its full potential. All the real in service trains I see are nearly always clean along the sides because they go through the washer. Modelers over here in the UK are obsessed with how BR let stuff deteriorate, but I bet when the LNER and the LMS were having their races to the north with their fabulous Coronation trains, I bet they shone. Modern day example, the LSL HST Midland Pullman train. That's the shiniest train ever and I have the full Hornby model of it. It's crying out to be glossed 😁. What could go wrong eh ? Consider Hornby's colours as the base colour of a two pack paint system as used on cars. Not until the lacquer clear coat is applied does the true colour emerge. Their Maroon red as used on their LMS Period IIIs and BR Mk1s looks so dull and boring, but add the gloss and wow. Same applies to that Hush Hush I did as video No.077 I think. They never finished painting it IMO. Now look at it 👍😁

      @@andrewdking Totally agree with you, that in the high days of the big four, had enough employees to keep the rolling stock shiny and glittering. These firms competed with grand prestige. Why a lot of people love that worn down BR look, is because most of them, as youngsters, where train spotting, that was a favorite past time, cost nothing, as most people at the time where glad to provide food on the table, some better off kids, did use dads an 8mm camera and filmed that era. And I get the nostalgic charm. And I think you agree with me, that although Britain won the war, it was at a very high cost, and the rolling stock became out dated, but was kept on running due to lack of money, until Dr Beeching out of necessity had to cut a lot branch lines. The only positive thing about that, was the birth of the fabulous heritage lines that came in existence by dedicated volunteers and crowd funding. Personally I have an interest Era 1 to 3, I love the pioneering of times, where everything needed to be invented, when a locomotive was not only a means of transport, but also a work of art. What I personally avoid are the scars of war in my modeling, just before WW1 society finely was bearing the fruit of the industrial revolution, destroyed in 4 years by senseless war, half the male population of towns wiped away, and when that was a bit recovered further devastation in WW2, the world is sad enough, so I avoid that in my hobby. I do improvements to the older model types of locos, like footplate detailing, or color etch the running gear, specially if it super silver metal shining , but never weathering, again a personal choice, and although I run basic DCC I don't like smoke or noice, again a personal choice, but I always respect everyone's choice of modeling, if it makes you happy you must do it. Enough sad now, I hope one day I can show you my modeling, I also am often in the UK, and always try to pick a train show or two, this year I already did the London show. Hi, Great video, I'm surprised there aren't any other comments. For your Humbrol enamels you could try adding a tiny amount of Ronson lighter fluid ( on a palette not into the tin ) This acts as a flow improver without thinning the paint, so is great for painting around fine details. Not my idea, I picked it up from another CZcams channel. An alternative to white enamel is Liquitex Acrylic ink Titanium White which is a very dense white pigment, still dries quicker than enamels but you can add acrylic flow improver if you wish.
