This incident starkly reminds us of the ongoing risks faced by UN staff, often forced to rely on aging aircraft operating over challenging and sometimes unmaintained airstrips. I understand that the use of older aircraft may be driven by budget constraints and operational requirements, particularly in remote and difficult-to-access regions. However, this reliance on aged planes significantly increases the risk of mechanical failures and catastrophic incidents, as we have unfortunately witnessed. It is imperative that the investigation into this incident be made public and transparent to all UN staff. Transparency is not just a matter of policy; it is fundamental to ensuring accountability and trust across the organization. Moreover, this tragedy should prompt an urgent reassessment of our current UN Aviation policies, particularly regarding the use of older aircraft. The UN must prioritize the safety of its staff by considering the following solutions: 1. Fleet Modernization: Invest in newer, more reliable aircraft that are better equipped to handle the challenging conditions in which the UN operates. 2. Enhanced Maintenance Protocols: Implement stricter maintenance schedules and protocols for all aircraft, particularly older models, to ensure they are in optimal condition. 3. Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Regularly review and update risk assessment procedures for all flight operations, including the suitability of aircraft for specific routes and conditions. Additionally, I seek clarification on the UN's policies regarding compensation for staff who lose their lives in air accidents, as well as for those who survive but must live with the trauma of such events. The UN must ensure that the families of the deceased and the survivors are adequately supported-both financially and emotionally. We cannot afford to lose more lives to preventable tragedies. The time for meaningful action is now, before another life is needlessly lost.
