    It’s been a crap year for tomatoes for many down here. They were stunted and very early blight from all the rain. It’s hard to say which I would try again. I like the Prairie fire, but they tend to have black spots if not picked early-blight? One I will always grow is Super Sauce as they are huge. Didn’t matter if they were hybrid or not as they all suffered, but SS fared better. Got enough to preserve and not the taste and quality I normally have. Most everything else did well including the purple beans which are still climbing and on a 4th picking, some by ladder 😅. Hope I find a best slicer soon. I think true tomato flavor is getting lost. Maybe go back to oxhearts and Brandywine. The yellow ones are Yuck! Yes, some of these varieties are difficult to tell when ripe but generally if soft they are ripe. And I also liked the German Johnson, large like mortgage lifter. Will try Steak Sandwich and Bodacious again. In 2012 we had drought and got oxheart from local farm market and they did very well and great flavor. The rain this year watered down the flavors. Getting preservation done as I’m not looking forward to 105 heat index Sunday and glad it’s short lived.

    Haven’t been able to get out in the garden down here because of the mosquitoes and too humid and hot to cover up with long sleeves, ect. Just read there was a couple West Nile Virus cases in the state. Yes, next year I’m cutting back on certain vegetables also. It’s been too wet for tomatoes in my garden but most everything else is fine. I can imagine too much running to market eats up time.

      Yes, I would! It has held up super well. The only thing I don't like is that smaller birds/chicks get out if the ground has dips, but you're going to have that with any tractor. I wish it had a door so I could open it and free range birds easier when they're in a more secure area (or when we are using it for turkeys and they are getting pretty big) but, we either put bricks under the front two corners or leave the roof open so they can fly in/out. But, for how much I saved going this route vs the more expensive one with the door, I'm glad I got this one.

    We prune exactly the same way & have amazing production. We also grow in a greenhouse. We do not use a shade cloth at all on our tunnel. Only on certain beds of greens for obvious reasons. Do what works for you. I feel like we get advice from others in different zones that don't really understand our climate.

  • @dustyflats3832
    @dustyflats3832 Před měsícem

    It’s not been a good year for tomatoes because of too much rain. Everyone has to do their own thing that works for their garden. I’ve heard pepper growers say they’ve quit topping peppers. The theory is it holds back growth and you may get more, but smaller peppers. Depending on length of season I suppose this might work. My experience with tomatoes outside is they would sunburn by that much pruning. Pruning out side shoots lessens production. Pruning off side growth will make them grow taller. I prune for air flow and that’s about it. The single leader sunburned. What is happening this year is the blight showed up 3 weeks early and it always was the first week of August. Stout vigorous growth has been delayed also. Too much rain, not enough sun/heat. And the mosquitoes are preventing me from tending things. I think what I’ve seen in single leader like you have is they use a line with a pulley and start lowering the vine. All this depends on length of growing season. As we head into fall we top the upper growth so the plant concentrates on growing and ripening the final remaining tomatoes. I just hope to get a big enough crop to can.

    I think I may not be letting my Atomics get fully ripe. I am going to try to keep them on longer this year to see. A tip someone told me for the Barry's crazy cherry is to wait until the stem / flower part at the top of the tomato turns from green to yellow. I have been waiting for it to turn yellow for the past couple years before picking and seems to be the trick. Also, I do not prune my cherry tomatoes. They start slower but you get a lot more production. I've tested 2 identical plants side by side and got triple the harvest of the plant that was not pruned. I know everyone in video's say to prune but I will never do it again after testing and my preference. Hope that helps.

    Nasturtiums 😅 the boat looked Great! I don’t even have nasturtiums blooming yet. Oh, you started them inside, that’s why. We have had WAY too much rain down here and mosquitoes are crazy! Not sure if we will have tomatoes as they just aren’t growing very well. Maybe they are ok, I can’t remember, but thought they should be bigger. The potatoes seem to be maxed out and they were huge and a handful of beetles this year, but we dug a collapsed hill and the potatoes are small. Just too much rain. I wouldn’t be able to keep up with pruning tomatoes especially trying to wear a head net and sweating all dressed up for mosquito protection. It’s not pleasant. It’s tuff to figure out fertilizer with so much rain in sandy soil. Can’t use liquid as they have too much water already. Things were looking lime green and used bloodmeal and other granular fertilizer and they look better. An earlier storm rearranged some plants. Thanks for showing your plants as it helps me to understand how big mine should be. It’s something you can’t find pictures of too easily. I was getting a bit worried we wouldn’t get a harvest, but I think maybe ok now. I am happy I planted more hybrids with fungus issues this year. The hollyhocks got rust and will need to get rust resistant varieties I guess as it’s bad. I used copper to help control it yesterday as we had a rare sunny day. Mildew was starting on bee balm also. It will be a struggle I think to get some plants through this year. We’ve had possum digging under garden fence, but bug pressure has been low. I think after the loads of mosquitoes and no sun with all this rain I’m liking the drought better-To a point😉. We are just under 32” of rain since March and our annual is 37” 😮. I bet you’re happy to have pasture back this year!

    He was a nice dog. I had a friend try and give me one of his Pyrenees dogs one time but I read up and found out they have about a 5-mile range and I didn't need a dog to protect farm animals since we haven't had any since our daughter moved out and on her own. We used to have a female named Tasha that was 1/2 Newfoundland and 1/2 American Malamute. She was so big! 139 pounds and she would not stay in the barn even is we locked her in. She would get out and get bred. She was 10 when she got hit by a car. She had a bad habit of walking down the middle of the road. The problem was, she was deaf and did not hear anything coming up behind her. I hope you guys can get him back to his owner.

    I just looked at garden journal and I cut scapes on the 7th, so we are 2 weeks ahead of your growing season in Z5a. So we had some of ours in a stir fry with shrimp over rice. I gave some away and chopped and froze the rest. The mosquitoes could carry us away. Only thing I can figure is there must be some low puddles somewhere or neighbors need to dump holding water. Others say they are thick elsewhere, yet today I was higher up on a hillside and didn’t see a one. Maybe you don’t have them so much yet because your area is still playing catch up with the drought.

Planted out what we needed and gave the rest of veg seedlings away to people in need. Filled a truck and they still didn’t take all away 😅. Had to do something as stuffing them back in GH wasn’t an option with all the rain this week. 5” at least this week and last summer was only 3.5”. We must be out of the drought by now, will see Thursday with new report. Next year I should know exactly what varieties I will stay with in tomatoes and peppers and cut back. Only so I can add more flowers😅. Our tulips were done a week ago and peony is about to bloom and irises are well underway. Yours will be booming soon! A word about hostas. I’ve been trying to get rid of them for a while and it’s almost impossible because one piece of root and they take off. They are invading the lawn. Enjoy the spring as it’s been a nice one so far. Not complaining about rain, but the peppers are a bit lime green and want sun.

    This lady should get someone to give her some proper instruction.
