Walk That Bass is all about Jazz and Blues. Jazz is a broad and complex genre of music which can be challenging to grasp. It's difficult to even know where to start. This is where this CZcams channel steps in. It offers free Jazz Piano Tutorials that cover everything you need to play the Blues and Jazz.
My goal in creating this website is to help those who are interested in learning to play and appreciate Jazz. It tries to combine both practical and theoretical aspects, so that you will be able to play Jazz, but also understand why the the thing you are playing sounds good (or bad).
These Jazz tutorials cover everything from Jazz chords, improvisation, Jazz scales, chord substitution, reharmonization, chord voicings, comping and everything else you need to become a competent and professional sounding Jazz musician.

Great tutorials, i've been trying to learn funk piano for awhile and I have trouble differentiating between 16th notes and a slower tempo and 8th notes at a faster tempo, but yeah the rests and using the accents and syncopations of the 16th note level is easy to understand

Im a guitarist that wants to learn some piano becouse i love the hammond and use plugins to try to get close to that sound, but also i wanted to learn more about being a musician vs being a guitarist that just plays guitar, i know a decent chunk of "theory" but i just wanna learn more and also put it into a more practical musical workframe, researching "blues piano course/lesson" found this video. I think this is the best i found yet, really great with great examples, and short basic simple explanation of how to put it into context. Could you reccomend me more content strictly about the blues? im not ready to jazzfy my piano playing just yet ;D

Masterful. The best and most complete explanation I have heard, and that should be reviewed more than once. The only significant omission, in my opinion, might be the "why" - argpeggios up and steps down. Ascending and skips tend to create more tension; while descending and steps tend to more resolution. You coul probably do another 18 minutes on articulation.
How can locrian can be related to Am? It has b5 in it...
The well tempered tuning systems may have presented the ideal ratio of "in tune/out of tune" before we sterilised it with out modern mindset. Of course, it was not possible to cripple nature entirely, for even equal temperament is not perfect. An object is only identifiable as this or that because it is more of this than that, or more of that than this, and if it is only this, or only that, it can hardly be distinguished from the other. The well tempered tuning systems kept that character while preserving practical uniformity, mirroring that society in which each soul is a valued one and all souls are part of a greater whole.

This video is very confusing. Why does it not show the things its talking about. You spend 4 minutes talking about a note with a missing fundamental, why not play it to show the difference. You already have audacity open.... so weird.
The part I dont understand is how you name chords throughout the circle of fifths. I understand how to play the scales and chords, but dont know the chord names. Thank you!

I think this is a bit of a stretch. Both songs are electro-swing, so share that same rhythm. If you listen to a lot of music from that genre, you'll notice similarities to Hells Greatest dad as a result. Mimsy being the same vocalist makes them sound closer, but I don't think the song was made as a reference or has any particularly references.

as someone with good pitch memory (NOT perfect pitch, yet similar in practice), different keys absolutely have different characteristics. I have memorized the sound of all 12 notes via 12 different songs* across multiple years, so these notes sort of carry the meaning of the songs I learned them from. For example, I learned G from Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor, so songs in G minor remind me of the powerful and regal quality of that fugue. F♯, however, I learned from Caramelldansen, which actually isn't even tuned in A=440hz since it's a nightcore remix. So, songs in F♯ sound very uplifting as I recall listening to Caramelladansen as a child, plus the song is literally tuned higher. *actually 11 songs, since I didn't need a song to learn C
A#m7b5, perhaps as a vii half dim in B? That's where that chord is diatonic.

Let's talk a bit more about frequencies and harmonics. Let us start (say) with base frequency 110 (A). Then, the octaves are: 220, 440, 880, 1760, etc. The Nth harmonic is our base frequency multiplied by N: >>> base_frequency = 110 >>> " ".join("%04s"%i for i in range(1,17)) ' 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16' >>> " ".join("%04s"%(i*base_frequency) for i in range(1,17)) ' 110 220 330 440 550 660 770 880 990 1100 1210 1320 1430 1540 1650 1760' >>> Note that in the octave between 880 and 1760 there are 8 basic, "natural" harmonics (from pure math / physics perspective). 8 notes that would be sounding the most "harmonically" as they all are natural overtones of our base frequency of 110 (from pure math / physics perspective). 8 notes, not 7. I think the 8th one was somehow "lost in translation" during the centuries when imperfect mucitians tried to somehow tune their instruments. It could as well be (and probably sounding better) this: 880 990 1100 1210 1320 1430 1540 1650 1760' A B C D E F G X A (Put "H" or "Z" or "Q" instead of "X" if you prefer).

Why isn’t the M7 the/a Character Tone of Ionian? Doesn’t it distinguish Ionian from Mixolydian, just as much as the P4 differentiates Ionian from Lydian? Are they Co-Character Tones, perhaps?! The Character (distinctive) tones of the Minor modes seem more obvious/‘orderly’, in this respect … ?! 🤔 Whilst I’m asking stupid questions 😉, is Locrian a Minor Mode, or is it a (THE) Diminished Mode (of the Major Scale)?,
well Lydian also has a major 7 so the only real thing distinguishing Ionian from the other two major modes is really the unaltered fourth, but i imagine the other reason is also related to avoiding a diatonic/functional sound, and to most people's ears the major 7 is commonly expected to want to go somewhere (the tonic in traditional western harmony, the sixth in non-modal jazz). It's also why Locrian is very tricky to use while keeping a modal sound (ie. so it doesn't sound like the b2 is the key) since it's character tone (b5) inherently does sound unstable yet is also part of the first chord, or why Lydian harmony you're likely to see that #4 as a chord extention
@@zaqareemalcolm Yes, Lydian has a M7 … but the M7 is also the only thing distinguishing Ionian from Mixolydian (the unaltered fourth does NOT distinguish Ionian “from the other two major modes” - it only distinguishes Ionian from one of them: Lydian). So, again, isn’t the M7 just as much a character tone of Ionian (necessary to distinguish Ionian from Mixolydian), as the P4 is (necessary to distinguish Ionian from Lydian)? I’m talking about the M7 note/interval. If you’re talking about a M7 chord, the M7 chord is stable and doesn’t need to go anywhere … and besides, a M7 chord IS the Tonic in Ionian (whereas the Tonic chord in Mixolydian is a Dom7). Seems like you may have meant Dom7, when you said M7 … ?! Also, Yes: the signature b5 of Locrian is a real problem … I’ve tried omitting the b5, altering it to 5, etc etc; but then it’s not really Locrian, is it … 😏 Locrian really IS the crappy, leftover dregs of the Major Scale Modes …
@@kierenmoore3236 No, I'm talking about the note M7 (seventh scale degree, like B in C Major etc.), pretty much our ears have already been conditioned to want it to go somewhere in a tonal sense whether it's present in a harmony/a chord (because it going to the tonic or sixth happens in voice leading too) or as part of a melody, which is a usually a discouraged effect if you want something to sound more modal. If you treat the note as a character tone you risk sounding more and more like a regular Major key than being in an "Ionian" mode. This is also exactly what makes Mixolydian different from Ionian because the m7 (Bb in context of C Major) doesn't have as much pull to the tonic which is what part of what gives the mode it's "dreamy" unresolved sound, which is why we say it's the Mixo's character tone and not the other way around with Ionian. Paradoxically again, the b2 in Phyrgian also acts as a leading tone back to home going downward, but it's an exception where that kind of thing is exactly what makes something sound Phrygian
@@zaqareemalcolm Ah, sorry - yes, you mean(t) the leading tone function. I see. I was thinking more about it, and the M7 interval is also dissonant, because it is an inverted m2. Still, nothing but the M7 distinguishes Ionian from Moxolydian … !! 🤷🏻♂️
@@zaqareemalcolm Major and Minor modes (of the Major scale) are treated somewhat differently, it seems to me … with the minor, there is always another note being flattened, so the key distinguishing note is unique and obvious … but with the Major modes, the altered note distinguishing one mode is ‘reversed’ before another altered distinguishing note is created (so to speak). So, the distinguishing notes remain and are ‘compounding’ throughout the minor modes, whereas it’s not so for the major modes …
What about a chord progression (or mere succession?) of Dm Em … no melody, no pedal point, no rhythmic/temporal/dynamic emphasis on either chord … that would be an Atonal Chord Succession? (albeit, a very simple one)
What makes the Dm(7) want to move to the G(7), though … ? Nothing?!
