I had a box stock 140hp 4 carburator Corvair Corsa 4onFloor 4:11. Beat my friends Stock 1967 289 w/Crusamatic by a length and 1/2. Handled much better through Sibel Canyon also. 26mpg. Deemed by safety engineers to be just as safe as any other auto of that era. Nader was a Marxist fool!!
So that's where the Daytona Coupe came from. I had wondered about that. I had heard they'd come from Carol Shelby but I didn't know the details.
It's all about numbers: 327 is bigger than 289.
I have a 68' Cougar with the 302. I want to re- do the motor. Working on putting a better radiator in it and just replaced the carb with another 2bbl. I really enjoy every video I see on small blocks.
Didnt even touch on using this to wim Indy.
Around 1976 i was picked up by a girl drivng a small car with a 289. Don't think it was a ford. Mercury maybe. She drove me from wolfville to Aldershot Nova Scotia. All i could do was watch the tach and hang on.
Great information. Thanks.
Great video, and you presented it very well! I have a 68 Mustang coupe I bought from the original owners in 1977. 289, automatic optioned with power steering, Factory AC, the neat turn signal indicators in the hood, vynil top, and MANUAL DRUM BRAKES! LOL. Lifelong Southern California car, engine runs well, but tired, runs cool good oil pressure, but smokes some from from a stop probably disintegrated valve stem seals. Otherwise it's in great shape. It's definitely part of the family.
I had a canary yellow 66 Fairlane 500 with a 289 in it, I rebuilt it and bored it .060 over and put a bigger lift longer duration cam, aluminum intake with a 600 ABF Carter and a set of wrapped headers and duel Cherry Bomb glass packs, it was a beast, started every single time and ran like a scalded assed ape!!! I was a dumbass for ever getting rid of that car, the 289 was the best running engine I’ve ever had, ford quit making them because they were too dependable and long lasting, they started making 302’s with Teflon coated timing gears so the would chunk a timing chain at around 70 or 80 thousand miles, they just don’t make engines like that anymore, and it’s sad!!!😂
Awesome engineering.
The 289/302/351 (Windsor??) family of engines is amongst the most famous and would probably have made Henry Ford damn proud.
I appreciate your knowledge base. Wow! Makes me want to go find a 289 and drop it into my go cart.
Shelby said the 289 was his favorite and most versatile engine.
First motor I ever tore apart
Sub’d As soon as I saw the shirt 🇺🇸
Really cool hearing the full engine history
289 CI WAS ONE OF THE BEST MOTOR FORD EVER MADE / I HAD A FEW OF THEM
Love Ford always! 💯
Talking about how great the 289 is but he has a Chevy Nova in the back.
Heroic
Why did nascar allow ford to run heads that were not on a production car?
Just spent some time (and $) finally giving my "wife's" '65 289 the attention and love it deserves. Should be picking her up today if all goes well. New Edelbrock 4 barrel, hedman headers with two and a half inch pipes out through Flowmaster 40's, some paint and a bunch of other little goodies. I am so friggin' excited to pick her up 😎
And a 351W stroked to 408-427 is WAY better still small block and revs but with big block power
The 289 engines we have are in are boats because they fit so well and have plenty of power , easily bolts up to Mercruiser outboards..?
Great video. Love the shirt.
I was raised in Southern Michigan, I witnessed several cars from different manufacturers with different motors, 289 Fords, 283 Chevy, 327 Chevy, 318 Mopar. Serious fun. I ended up with a 302 camero with all the bells and whistles. Not saying what was best, just what I saw, all were impressive.
I had a 289 in my '66 Mustang. It was so easy to work on for a 16 year old.
I had one that tacked out at 8500 up to 9000 rpm,s but I've always had a Leadfoot
Carroll Shelby said the 289 is his favorite engine. That's about the best it gets in my book.
So Ford dropped them. Then they dropped the 429. And now Chevrolet absolutely dominates NHRA Pro Stock and Ford is flat on their ass!! Ford looks so bad I dont know why anyone buys their crap. They cant get out of their own way. And here we are with the "chain slinger engines"..Now that's a real stroke of genius..but no one will use them for buildups..nobody!!! Ford cars are full of Chevrolet LS engines from coast to coast. Ford is nowhere to be seen. Disgraceful Ford management. They suck!
Nascar has always leaned towards Chevrolet to get all the breaks and still do. Thats why Chrysler told them to shove it.n Ford is only into Nascar half assed.
It was not all that good. Ford dropped them in just a few years. They were not offered to the general public but Chevy parts were. You had to be a giant Ford ass sucker to get close to them. Screw Ford.
An electrical engineer took his street GT-40’s 271 HP engine and replaced the induction system with an EFI and engine management system. With no other changes horsepower went up to 336. Shelby autographed my 289 Cobra spec sheet while on his book tour.
Thank you very much for this brilliant, informatic Story about the 289. I think, this engine was a masterpiece
289 was still the best
I have two of them, one is in my 65 Falcon Convertible. It had a tired 260 in it that we were going to rebuild but then l decided l wanted a little more so l called my Ford guy and ask if he had a 289 hi po, he just happened to have 2. The one in the Falcon had been rebuilt with all the Shelby goodies but l dressed it up like a stock 260, even left the fender badge on to surprise some of those Chevy boys and finished it off with a Tremec 6-speed. This was five years ago so last year said Ford guy needed to enlarge his shop would l be interested in buying his Brian Anglish steel bodied Cobra. Oh yeah! The car had a stock 80s 5.0 Mustang engine that had to go. The other hi-po is getting the GT-350 treatment. Can't wait to get this one together!
I have a 289 in my 66 mustang. I love the engine sounds amazing good power amazing reliability.
I never seen these break. Ford made tons of tough engines until the triton. In my opinion you’re better off in a classic. It won’t clean out your bank account when you need to repair it and it’ll always hold value better than late models
The story I read many times over the years was Shel ask what the distance from where they were to the shop door answer 350 hence the name.
My last stock car in Chicago was a 289 HP with a Roush setup using 351 heads in a Torino could hug the bottom like on a rail
It's funny how Ford's "Total Performance" never made it to the street. Almost all Ford's at this time got their ass kicked up and down Main St. America. Being a Ford guy I along with other Ford guys know this to be true.
in the early 70's i had 1963 Futura 289 with 4 speed,,,no problems and much fun, real tire smoker
Very good, FJB..!
Love your videos. Awesome shirt 🤣
😂
Dennis Raider's (BTK) little brother
Couldn’t have said it better. 289, with its short stroke and small mains; a great competition motor.
If you look at Jay Leno's garage when he had an early 60's "Lola" on, it had a 260ci and you won't believe the sound when the owner started it up. It sounds like a built big block. Supposedly it could hit 200 on the straits and was the inspiration for the GT40. I like chevy but there is nothing wrong with those small block Fords!
There was also a 351 ci Windsor engine. I'm not talking Cleveland block.
Had a 67 Galaxy 2 door with a 289 3 on the tree back in 86. I was 16. It was indestructible. I showed it no mercy. I wouldn't have traded it for a Ferrari. I miss it.
