Some of the original terms were negative (look at what the graph looks like). So when you square those negative terms, they become positive and increase the sum by exactly the right amount.

Idk if someone answered this already, or maybe I misunderstood something, but in real life, only the people who pirated would lie. Like no one would not pirate but lie and say they did. So really it would just be some fraction of the people who did pirate that are lying. Does this even matter? Is there some way to account for it?
Here's an example that might help: asking someone their weight might be sensitive. So what if I ask Bob his weight plus a random number between -100000 and 100000. Would Bob be so self-concious that he'd lie and just say "MY WEIGHT IS -100000"? I think basically everyone knows that, after adding such a huge random number to your weight, there's no way I can guess your weight, so you'll just go along with the game. Then, when I average everyone's weight, I can get the true average (because all the randomness cancels out) without anyone feeling like I know what their weight is. If you believe the math, this is 100% analogous with the piracy lying example, and you should feel just as comfortable playing that game. Think about it, if I ask 49% of people to lie, and everyone is innocent, then 49% of people will say they pirate. Is nintendo just going to go after 49% of the population like that? Of course not. Mathematically, people are protected and should feel safe playing the lying game (given of course you make them lie at a rate sufficiently close to 50%).

I think you ask all people to lie with some probability. e.g. flip a coin twice and lie if it is HH. This still requires participants to faithfully follow the instructions, but so do non sensitive surveys.
