    Changing the gate voltage and thus the idle current of the BS170 push-pull stage solves the harmonic problem. The 3-th harmonic remains rather strong on some band, app. -13dBc

  • @herman3555
    @herman3555 Před rokem

    Btw: The explanation of the function of Q202 and Q201 is clear to me. A prerequisite for the used principle is that the 3 bs170's have exactly the same gate voltage to drain current graph, it should be matched trio's for proper operation. The voltage over R206 is 0,7Volt, so Q201 will just start to conduct and pulls the gate voltage to such a value that balance exists in maintaining this be voltage. The current thru R206 is than o,7/33 amp. D201 is for compensating the be voltage of Q201 so all 3 fets have the same gate voltage. If the 3 fets are matchedl the same current flows thru all 3 fets

  • @herman3555
    @herman3555 Před rokem

    Hi Mark, i just assembled this amp and found out 2 things. 1st the pus-pull bs170 stage oscillates on 230MHz. Fix: 2 33 pF caps direct over gate and source. Frequency response remains ok from 2-30MHz. 2nd the 1st harmonic is just 13dB below carrier, that is a problem. I encounter 1.8volt on the gates of the bs170's just as you did. Might be the harmonic problem. What is the idle current of these 2 bs170's after you corrected the gate bias voltage? 73, Herman PA0VRE

    I've built two of these. The first one fizzled (literally) due to an issue of my own creation. I was much more careful with the second one. Even with that, I still had a hidden solder blob that caused me to cut out the original IFR510's, clean up the traces, and install new MOSFETS. Then I had a hideous ground loop from my cheap signal generator that caused a sustained self oscillation. I built an isolation transformer and replaced my haphazard input/output wire leads with coax, and after all of that, I obtained almost exactly the same results as G0MGX. This is a difficult kit. A careful build by an experienced kit builder can produce a working amp though.

How would you compare the 7610 notch (auto and manual) against the 890? I could live with not having a second receiver but not with a too inferior NB, DNR and notch. Your input would greatly be appreciated here. I'm making my mind up on the IC7610 or the TS890. We all know de Kenwood's DNR is not as capable as the DNR of Icom ond Yaesu. Nice rig...The set up still looks a bit complicated. I used signal link before and had it working for PSK and CW. Unfortunately Windows I believe did a up grade and I lost all of my COMPORTS. I tried for hours to reinstall the software comports. I was using a Yaesu 101D and the software never reinstalled for my logging program or other data. I gave up the challenge for days and went back, regrouped and tried again. Still no luck. I am in the process of selling my home and moving back to Wyoming. I have sold all of my radio gear and have been thinking of starting over with a small station. The TS 890 is no small radio or investment but it should last me the remainder of my ham years. Maybe for me the KISS principal is the best. "Keep It Simple Stupid." LOL. Was wondering if downloading the drivers from Kenwood is any easier than from Yaesu or Icom? I may just use SSB with a dipole and go barefoot. It was a kick to use PSK on less than 10 watts and make contacts all over the world. No amp needed!
