You need nodes. The way this UI is set up is definitely not optimized for this stuff.
ground stacked subs for raves is brilliant haha. turn em up as high as noise prob will allow you. the punters want their intestines rearranged
i had excellent results the one time i had a guitarist with two different transducers in their guitar cab. hard panning left and right on a 3 piece band. small venue so most people are getting something close to a stereo image. had a similar effect to double tracked guitars in a studio. cant say id do it on every show though
I'm just starting to learn sound engineering for my own band I'm starting because I'm almost obsessed with crushing the fans live... "even" that music sounds amazing with how you're mixing it, I can't wait to learn more so my metal/thrash will slay it. Thank you for making these videos!
Great stuff here!
So basically, you guys are saying you just need the drum clip from quarter inch to XLR with no module in line on the console?
Been watching these on long drives to Brisbane for gigs. Loving the content even years later. I believe the Angus that Pooch is referring to would be Angus Davidson who used to mix FOH for crowded house. I’ve been his system tech on orchestral/broadway style gigs before. Lovely dude! All the best.
Very nice . She's omichannel has always been a goto of mine. Such a powerful plugin! Thanks for this amazing content btw!!!
I believe the sE mic Pooch was referring to at 30:40 was the old sE 4 condenser mic which he used for snare top for Linkin Park for a while.
Very good conversation
Which Mojave? I used to know the model but I cannot for the life of me remember
You sir are an inspiration.
This is a really amazing gift to the live sound community. For us guys who work in the lower ranks, in the small to medium sized halls, this is invaluable because we don’t often get any engineers of your guys caliber passing through with touring bands. Kudos guys. Hope to meet y’all someday.
I got to work with ‘Cookie’ couple weeks ago. A wealth of knowledge and willing to share his process. Very cool dude. Thanks you all for sharing .. this topic requires allot more coverage.
Great stuffs.. thank you both.
The 80/20 rule. This entire video should be a direct link on the Waves PSE website I have been bitten twice by the PSE. For comedians and pastors, your mileage may vary.
Gold! Thank you :)
Youre guys ... youre "weirdest" fully with experience ! Huge respect for you two !
On the topic of the Haas effect, do you set the volume of the delayed image the same as the source of the image, or do you set it lower, so that it sounds a bit like bleed (I think Martin Birch may have done done on many of the early Maiden recordings, such as Piece of Mind)?
Say you have a rock band like Maiden before they became a six-piece. How would you record and pan (hard left/right or slightly inward?) the guitars for a studio album, and would it be different from how you mic up and pan them in the live setting?
I started my mixing career on a PM1800
This is just pure GOLD!!!
How do you place and combine the SM57 with the MD421?
Thanks for this! 🤘
Good point! 8:58
This is the best live sound info video available on the Internet. And not just for sound engineers, like every musician should watch this!... Thanks for the gold videos guys!
Damn so much good stuff here! Thank you for doing this!
Please make more videos 🙏🏼
Pooch's 5 things: 9:00
I would love to see Chris’s target curve he was referencing here. Always Ike to see how other guys are managing that rise into the low end of the PA and crossover into the subs
You mean M80 not M81 (the brighter one?) I believe this is documented elsewhere so are they getting confused?
Smoke a Doobie, get "dumb", and do *this* for an M32. ...lol..., wait, what?
Hey Pooch and Rabold, still wachting your covid conversation regularly and always find some more nuggets of wisdom in them. What do think about making an educational book out of it? I mean, Bobby Owsinskis books on recording, mixing and mastering consists to about 50% out of interviews and those seemed to sell quite nicely. If you do, don´t forget who gave you the idea🥳 Greetings André
It’s ironic. The audio here is so loud.
That episode containes so much helpful information! Thank you so much
Fuckin invaluable/indispensable information. So awesome. Would love to hear the difference between how you mix electric bass compared to key/“Moog” bass as well as when you have both of them not only in the same set but in the same track. You guys are the shit thank you
I recorded my band in NY back in 2011 myself because I studied audio in college and have a bachelor's degree. We decided it would make more sense to buy recording gear and never have to go to a studio for recording again. The results were absolutely amazing. We had an isolated (down the hallway lol) control room, 16 channel snake, iMac with Logic Pro, two 8 input focusrite interfaces on FireWire, one of the larger 2011 Waves packs, two Blue Baby Bottle for drum O.H. and vox, cabs, etc etc etc... When it came time to mix, even though my ability as an engineer was clearly proven, everyone decided to use a 3rd party so we went with The Cutting Room and one of their multiple gold and platinum record engineers, Tom Gardner. As it would've been REALLY expensive for us to take more than an hour per song, that's what we decided and Tom was totally capable of that. So after 5 hours of us letting him do his thing we went back to hear what he came up with and it was all incredible EXCEPT for the drums. He pro-tooled all of my incredible tones out and it sounded nothing like our band! Hearing this drum travesty was AFTER he said to me how good the recording was. One of the best local band demos he's been given in both master track quality and talent. So I was SHOCKED that he would just replace the drums out of habit. Regardless, I had him switch them back and asked him to just mix the drums with me and we really had a blast getting into it. Endgame was that the EP came out sounding incredible. I spent a LOT of time on my drum tuning and microphone placement and brand choices so of course I wanted to hear ME on the recording. Had it mastered there as well and with all we spent on the project, I would've been crushed if my drums weren't really captured and included on the EP.
Amazing video guys 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Put the pintech triggers on the outside or inside of the drum if shell mounting?
Nice content guys. 💯
I find you guys discussions very interesting and informative. I love your thorough breakdowns and opinions. Although I don't agree on outcome of the immersive experience as far as live is concerned, only time will tell. Like 4-track (quad) of the 70's all the same difficulties exist. Setting up the ideal listening environment works at home, but almost cannot efficiently exist in a large venue. Not that some wont try and succeed, but I feel that for the same reasons that most mix engineers do not mix to the stereo experience will only be compounded for quad with center channel and a sub. While IMAX is a great experience too, there is too much going on for the brain to process, It's too expensive for the added experience, and if not done perfectly, the glitter and glitz will be a flash in the pan like Quad. Well done stereo is still king. I still mix with imaging to bring value to the front seats to where the music matters. Cheers keep up the great discussions.
Thanks for this one, guys. Even a year later I’m still dealing with the fallout of COVID at my job, and I really needed this video today.
I might put Earthworks and DPA, in the list with Shure, Sennheiser, and Audio Technica.
Have you guys tried the new VST host hardware/software from Yamaha? I’d love to have a handful of sound toys things
What interface are you using with live professor? I’d be really curious how you handle latency issues.
I know it’s risky but, I’d love to see the actual documents that you guys shared on your requirements from sound companies ect. I’d really enjoy reading them properly as its something that really interests me. I’m only catching up on the episodes and hope you see this! I LOVE what your doing with the podcast! It’s amazing. Rory J.
Awesome as always guys!
Hey! It's great to see you guys again! Things are going really slow up here in Canada but still moving forward. Thanks for all of the videos, too. I'm pretty sure I've watched every episode, maybe twice. 😅 Take care!!
All well and good lads, but have you tried the x32 eq 4 nights a week? it will leave you crying and not in a good way haha. Thanks again guys, always a great watch.
thanks guys
