It's pretty simple they're putting the small guy off the road when I started in 87 there were lots owner operators on the road now it's nearly all big company generic trucks.

My newly revised 2024 terms and conditions for my business ( Remodeling homes) states 50% up front, no questions asked. If the other 50 doesn't get paid in time, then we talk lein. I'm tired of getting burnt. So, if they don't trust that, they call someone else. Period.

This isn't the trucking industry, this is industry in general. Every industry has companies that push off debts owed for months until last minute (until they finally go bankrupt). When you think "oh, they are giving me the run around for paying me all the time and are always late to pay", its almost guaranteed they are doing this for ALL of their vendors and are perpetually in the red. And they always trail you along by paying *EvEnTuAlLy*, which they use that as a way to slowly ramp up more bills. It's a "boiling the frog" situation where you are eventually going to be cooked. You have to learn to have limits and be able to cut off services and maintain leverage. It's expected to have a little bit of time between payments (normally a month or two depending on accounting and when accrued), but 4 months is a red flag...

Same thing happens in building contracting. If you're a subcontractor you have to keep a sharp eye on the general contractors that hire you. In any case you need to limit how much time you'll wait to get paid for work. I limited companies to 30 days. If you don't get paid stop doing any work for them immediately. The shorter the amount of time the less money you stand to lose if and when someone you're working for goes belly up.
