Badly broken bridges on 20H
There were two badly broken bridges on OFTR trail 20H. I moved some pieces on the first one and was able to easily get across with some speed and balance; I wasn't so lucky on the second one. I was able to pull off a loose board and make a ramp up to the top of the near end of the badly tilted last section. That little ramp worked but I didn't look far enough ahead when I first assessed the hazards. There was a big gap at the bottom of the tilted section where it had come off a steel mesh box of rocks that had been a base for the bridge. The gap was a little wider than my front front wheel, which dropped into it, and I went over the bars. That was my fist Ass Over Teakettle experience in quite a while. Luckly, I hit the swampy mud instead of the rocks and didn't hurt myself or the bike. (Sorry for all the loud mouth breathing with my blocked sinuses that day.)

OFTR mixed single & double track 20 H trail

This trail needs some maintenance in several spots. It's a really nice trail and I like the rocks and elevation changes but SCORRA does a better job than HTR and KORMA with signage and maintaining their trails. (And yes, I'm a SCORRA member and I did a volunteer trail maintenance day this spring in addition to minor maintenance work on various trails.)

OFTR's Picard Lake trail (part of #190) vanished into a lake at the branching point from the Waterfall Trail (#199 and #275). This left no way to get to the south end of the 20 H trail (also named #190 for some odd reason) without backtracking a long way on KATVA road #43 and then #44 and then taking trail #160 to get to the point where four different trails, all named #190, intersected. The "easy" transit to the 20H single track had some beautiful scenery but also a few unexpected traps. I turned my video off after getting stuck in a deep mud puddle up to the bottom of my airbox and then forgot to turn it on again for a while. It took a while for me to lift and drag my bike out and, after getting almost free but running out of energy, three other riders came by and one helped ...

I have a 2024 250x and this is the complete opposite of my experience. Always been a Honda fan but this bike is unbelievable. I can't speak to your skill as I don't know you but it seems the bike was not tuned properly at all and some of those stalls were suspect. I have a friend who has one and he loves it. I don't think the one in this video was tuned or set up properly for that day and then it got abused all day. Even though I was nearly exhausted by the time I rode this one on a hot day after a full day of enduro test and transit sections on my own bike and three prior demo bike rides, I was disappointed in this particular bike on that day. I don't think it was the best situation for that demo ride of that model.

@@trigger8152 I got a Husqvarna TE150 last year which is very similar to the same years of KTM 150 XC-W models. In short, I love it. It's very manoueverable and fun to ride and my riding buddies who have tried it also like it a lot. I'm a heavier guy at 200 lbs and the 150 has no lack of power for me on hills and over technical terrain. I've been racing it a bit for the past year and my results are better on that 150 that they were on my own YZ250FX 4-stroke. My Yamaha is still a great bike and very good in many situations (especially on MX tracks) but the 150 2-stroke is much better and less tiring in tight woods. My 2023 150 is the last of the KTM/Husqvarna/GasGas TPI models but the 2024 TBI models are also said to be excellent. The three sub brands are very similar for the same displacements but I personally would buy a KTM rather than the Husky if I was buying a new one. The main reason would be for the aluminum subframe instead of the composite one but the PDS rear suspension would be slightly better going over some obstacles than the linkage on the Husky and the PDS is good enough now to compete with the Husky and GasGas linkage rear suspension in most other places. The Brembo brakes and clutch hydraulics are also better on the KTMs than the Braketec versions on the Husky and GasGas. The KTM airbox breathes better but the Husky might be more watertight. The Husky airbow alaso apparently give a more mellow power delivery to the same base engine but I haven't noticed it to be a problem. Either one would be a great bike but so would a Yamaha YZ250FX. Which will be better for you will depend mainly on where you will ride it the most.

The decision for me in your case would come down to are you goingf to be rididing a lot of tight, twisty, single track trails in heavily treed forests. If so, the 150 2T might be better. If not (as I assume might be true for the desert), then I would definitely go for the YZ250FX 4T. That will also definitely be better for sand. Good luck with whichever one you choose!

I got stuck bad in the year's BB. Came around a corner and drove right into a engine case deep rut. Had to strip off my helmet and camelback and horse the bike out by lifting one end at a time and dragging it (easier said than done by yourself). Took about 8 minutes and was totally gassed by the time it was out. Might have been the same rut I started at minute 42 so things were pretty soupy by the time I came thru some section. That one transit section was 1st gear feet down bad for a long ways. I've never ridden much mud before was an experience for sure. Couldn't figure out whether having my weight forward or back worked better.

Getting stuck sure does sap your strength -- especially when you're already pretty tired out. I luckily had a riding buddy to help me lift my bike out of this rut because it wasn't possible to go forward due to a root in it. I was on row 19 in the BB but I was around 30 minutes past my key time by the time I finished Test 5. The transit after that test was very difficult because of the ruts. ( czcams.com/video/wIaAaXak7yo/video.html ) At one point, I went into a rut even deeper than the one in this video. It was so deep that both of my axles were below the surface but luckily I was able to ride my way out of it.

Yeah, we are spoiled now with such great bikes with electric start, much better suspension and ignition systems, greater reliability, etc. I wouldn't be able to do an event like this at all now in my 60's on one of the bikes from 50 or even 40 years ago. The bikes keep getting better but I can't do as much with them now as I could in my 20's and the younger guys can do more with them now than I ever could. Did you race the BB this year?

@@philashmore3925 That's an impressive history. I doubt that I will still be able race in my mid-70s either. I have a litlle more skill and understanding about woods riding than I did 40 years ago but a lot less strength, endurance, bone density, reation time, and visual accuity. Those negatives will only keep getting worse so I probably don't have many more race seasons left in me.

It was great meeting both of you also! I hope she's okay and still enjoyed her first enduro. The first one's always the toughest. I'm not sure yet if I will race both days for the Gopher Dunes XCs but I will definitely race at least one of them.
