The issue is that my fish don't tolerate nitrates above 12ppm.

@@CoralsReef24 really thats strange because fish are know to be able to handle high nitrates. How do they act when the nitrates are higher ?

@@Coral-reef. The blue hippo tang starts acting strangely when nitrate levels are high. I posted a video about this a few days ago.

@@CoralsReef24 i am frustrated with my blue tang. He just will not come out of his cave. Hes always been very nervous but he would atleast come out in feeding time, but now he will try to snatch food from inside his cave. I dont know what else to do it has me very frustrated.

I used to rely on Eco Wavemakers placed on either side of my tank, constantly blasting my corals. However, I made the switch to Maxspect Gyre, setting it at approximately 10% rotation per minute. Now, I enjoy a gentle wave flowing through my tank, keeping my corals content. It's been a year, and my corals seem to thrive under this setup. As long as your return pump ensures enough cycles through the filtration system per hour (turnover rate), you might find that fewer waves suffice. The ideal turnover rate varies depending on your aquarium's size. For instance, in a 100-gallon reef tank, you'd target a flow rate of 1000 to 2000 gallons per hour (GPH) through your filtration system.
