In medieval Europe, they would wear a surcoat/surcote, tabbard, or jupon OVER their armour to help identify themselves. That way, it would be easier to tell friend from foe, and it would be easier to spot who was worth capturing for a ransom, as opposed to just killing them or sending them to prison camps. A coat of arms, that would identify ONE SPECIFIC individual but usually share some elements of ancestors coat of arms, could be embroidered on the surcoat and or shield. Beyond that it would shiw a simple pattern of a few colours to indicate familial belonging and general allegiance. After all, it's generally better to be alive to be ransomed than dead or a general prisoner. And iirc even up into ww1 noblemen who was taken as prisoners of war, could be temporarily released home for special events like Christmas, and would return to their captors as a matter of honour. They would also not necessarily try to escape after being captured, again due to honour. Modern militaries typically order their officers and soldiers to try to escape and resist as much as possible/feasible. As a result the culture of keeping high value prisoners for ransom and giving them more or less free leave of the castle/camp has died out.
