should you rehearse a lot or will your acting get stale?
Curious about working directly with me? Set up a free strategy session and find out if you're a fit: bit.ly/20withsarah My classes are for actors who are serious about working on their craft, who care deeply about storytelling and are ready to be challenged. Please do not reserve a time unless you know you can make it.
Sometimes I hear actors say they only want to rehearse a scene a few times so it wonât get stale.
Other actors fully believe in rehearsal, but find themselves in the stale trap and wonder if they simply went through it too many times.
I donât want you to rob yourself of the opportunity to discover wonderful moments through rehearsal, but you must learn how to rehearse so that you donât get stuck.
I talk about this very thing in this class clip where an actor was feeling stale in her work at home and wasn;t sure what to do.

Read n study the entire script dont miss anything U shud also read others lines to understand better Look age physical description social class of character u are playing
U have to actually listen u cant act it no fake reactions Repeating other characters lines before u say urs..it brings up natural response Reaction exercise decide ur soul objective of ur character wt u want other character to feel Act wid eyes hear wid eyes too not just ears
Working on character inside out n from out side in Find out y character is shy how they are shy painfully shy or naturally shy Try to be in their shoes connect emotionally Try to recall shyness moments from ur life n use it Particular way of speech ur character mi8 have..lyk stutter or sumthng pick it up
Ask yourself I'm I staying present??living in the scene now.lyk don't think abt wt ppl director is thinking liking me or not etc..just listen to actor in front of u n be available to ur impulses Have I done my homework??script analysis back story emotions Do I really believe it? Do u listen in everyday life? Stop thinking wt ppl think abt u? Don't get mad sad frustrated wen ppl give feedback..!!it's OK if u don't do the best n few opportunities always improve with every scene...it's OK to be not so gud Just live in the scene n tell the story just concentrate on that
Who dat person is to u emotionally?? wt emotions u have for them? why ur talking to them? How they are reacting to things ur saying? Don't look at ppl in audition decide a spot to look

All I see is Sharpay from HSM, I can totally see her becoming an acting coach. But, thank you so much for this informative video, you're so sweet and beautiful <33
Omg!!
Agreed thought my adhd messed it up
Seems easy maybe just nervous that's why I talk to every actor on the side to make myself feel comfortable
HOWđ©
You should have added a worked example to the explanation
It's your ego protecting you from embarrassing yourself. Hardest emotions to express are the ones you've been punished, shamed, or embarrassed by showing through conditioning. If you were scolded for crying, this might be hard. If you were allowed to cry and people comforted you while you cried vs. shamed. Getting over it can be very satisfying. Acting in this sense can be therapy, giving a good reason to express these emotions that were held back
Meisner would have said that there should be no character work or extra stuff added on until after the emotional learning and preparation were done for at least a year and truly worked into the being of the actor. He would also have rejected that "the character wants" something and told his students that THEY are the character, living truth under imaginary circumstances. That is probably why talking about "the character" amplified the "acting." Both he and Stella Adler would have screamed about how acting is not reading lines.
I agree that the actor is the role- and when I phrase the question to the actor in the moment I always ask, âwhat do YOU want?â. Thereâs usually important issues the actor needs to address around trust and self-worth / value when they âpushâ chronically as well.
Thank you
Change of thought
Whats really difficult for me is my region....I live in nigeria and I simply cannot overestimate how i much wanna be an actor, have been wantingto be an actor since I was a child my Siblings even call me damisa b jordan ,and have been watching video online for a while now but most of this things are barely or not even accessible here, me even thinking about it gets me really depressed. Cux its like you cannot ever be an actor!.
Still really do enjoy ur class though....continue the work đ
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you so much.
My character is always some form of me. If I get a choice, I like to play roles where the only one I study is me. If the character is itchy, how do I do itchy? If the character is gay, Iâm not gay, but Iâve been hurt, misunderstood, accepted, loved. I use those times in my life, but put together like the writer or my imagination decides. But Iâm also a novice.
"Stop acting and just say the lines." Not naturalism. Be okay with just saying the words. I have to remember to say this to myself before each self tape. Presence. LIfe. The moment. Do I believe me right now? - Working through all of that. - The times I've been more present without trying to please or focus on a result, the more "non-acting" I've been.
It's not, "Do I sound natural?"!
I've been dealing with actors block for awhile but this video has really helped in a major way. Thank you for your insight.
I'm so glad Anthony!
Thank you so much. It really helped me to think in the right way
I'm so glad!
Very helpful!
"Beat" was one of the hardest terms for me to understand when it comes to acting as an animator. Thanks. This is even a more indepth explanation because I generally looked at beats as accents or events as opposed to a phrase or transition. So this is very helpful for looking at it in a new way. In the future I will look it as transition or change in mood.
Iâm so glad it was helpful!
I love this explanation. Thank you
I hope you're correct in saying whatever you say when you lose the line will be ok cause it doesn't feel that way when it's actually happening đŹ
Hey Kerwin! I hear ya! Of course you need to be off book well, but I do believe that many of us have an unconscious belief that forgetting = BAD and we make it mean that we are failing. A simple mindset shift that tells you otherwise may help. See the whole article here: realactorslab.com/forgetting-your-lines/
@@RealActorsLab Thanks. I'll check out this link. Believe me, I'm way off book. In fact I know all the others characters lines before and after mine. I record them on a voice recorder app on my phone leaving space for me to say my lines in between. This gets me used to hearing the lines before mine and then the ones after. The whole scene is memorized in my head so that isn't an issue either. Like the gentleman in your video I am so into the scene and my scene partners that I'm not thinking of anything else and for the life of me I can't figure out why the line escapes me. I'm thinking about doing something I called "cheating". In this particular play I'm in there are lots of other scenes in between the scenes that I am in so I think I will carry a copy of the script backstage and look over my lines before my scene begins and then go out there and do them. Hopefully seeing them that close to performing them will keep me from forgetting them even after all the hours that I have put in memorizing and rehearsing the lines. What do you think?
@@kerwinalexander6836 It's hard to say without having worked with you but typically I do not recommend cramming lines beforehand. The issue is usually a personal / emotional one -- like a limiting belief you have about yourself. My personal favorite mantra is "I do my work, I do not prove my worth". You know the lines. Perhaps a fear of failure? or not feeling good enough?
@@RealActorsLab Yes, I agree there is something stemming from me (personally). I've recently discovered that I am a " Self- Oriented Profectionist" stemming from my childhood and young adult years that as a black male I was told that I couldn't do this and I would never be that and I decided to prove them all wrong whenever I was told any of that. Also I've been a surgeon's assistant for the last 25 years (I'm now 58 years old and I retired 2 years ago). Everything I did in the operating room had to be precise and organized to the letter or the patient could be injured or killed. So my perfectionist personality trait worked out really well in that occupation. Now I'm pursuing an acting career and that trait is not so warranted or necessary. So now, I believe you have helped solve my issue with the forgetting of lines. I just read your blog "Do you know how to rehearse well" and discovered/ remembered that for this particular play my cast (there are 2 casts - this is a community theater) we're shut out of several rehearsals and dress rehearsals because they had issues with getting choreographers, lighting problems, and props. They also aren't open on Wednesdays and Sundays. Long story short, me/my character never got proper staging for the show and so we're now two shows into actual performances with a crowd and when saying my lines I have props, lighting and staging issues to deal with that I shouldn't if they were worked out during rehearsals. So the idea from your article is I should practice my lines while moving and staging myself as I do in the play (as if it was a rehearsal) at home. Since I've done two shows I know exactly where my blocking is, who I'm talking to, what my lines are and what props are around me. I can do my own rehearsals of my scenes at home (visualizing the people, props and saying my lines of course). My brain should make the connections it needs so when I'm on stage there shouldn't be too many surprises (of unknown origin) and my body and lines will flow naturally without being in my head for anything. What do you think? Great article by the way.đ You're a great inspiration too. I'd love to be one of your students. Watching your videos excites and motivates me. Also, I've subscribed to your YT channel and book marked your website. I'd really love to meet you in person some day and/or participate in an online webinar or class you may host in the future. @@RealActorsLab thanks a lot
Super helpful
hi, so i have this show in like a month in which i play a water guardian who's protecting an important stone that some pirates want to take from me (note that i have NEVER acted before, i actually dance and this is a show from my dance academy but, as a said, there is some acting). My character is kinda arrogant and thinks no one can steal her stone because a lot of people have tried and failed, so she kinda has a god complex (which she kinda is). The issue is, i have no idea how i should act like a water guardian, the goddess i am suppossed to be, because i have literally 4 lines in which i kinda make fun of the people trying to come to my area and steal from me, and after a fight which i suppossedly win, i then realize that someone stole the stone from me and i get all hysteric and leave. i have absolutely no idea what to do with my body or arms or anything, because i enter my scene walking while talking, then do nothing. sorry if this comment is too long but i dont know what to do
Totally understand the challenge here. This is a question thatâs too hard to answer in a comment here but if youâd like to set up a coaching session feel free to email support @ realactorslab.com and weâll be happy to help out! Thank you so so so much for this! I have a question, lets say two characters are trying to be there for eachother. The writer only says that, are you allow to hold that person hand for example? Like, carry an action that is not written in the script? How much freedom we have when it comes to that? Thank you!
great question! of course! is this for a play or self-tape or...? you MUST act with your body. :)
@@RealActorsLab This was a scene for a tv series. thank you so much for your advice!
The term 'beat' always confused me. It's supposed to be 'bit' thats more helpful
Well, also-- the "beat" part can help you remember to take and actual moment to transition.

So interesting looking at vid, the way you are talking, the deconstruction of the script, feels like there's a math or science to it
It really is rather scientific!
You can apply this in life as just being yourself as a human being. I'm not an actor. I'm just trying to work on being at peace with myself, being present and knowing that I am enough. Someone told me to "leave myself alone". I was struggling. I didn't understand what the term meant. So I googled it and discovered this video. Thank you.
