Gibson SJ-200 vs Dove vs Hummingbird vs G45 Studio
Gibson has a wide variety of shapes and sizes, as well as tone woods, to choose from in their lineup. But which one(s) are right for you? Well, here's a little video of all the ones I currently have available to show you.
The SJ-200 and Dove come in wearing a spruce top and maple back and sides, but they are very different body shapes.
The Hummingbird comes in wearing a spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The square shoulder dreadnought body shape is very much like it's younger sibling, the Dove, but the Dove and Hummingbird have always been uniquely in their own space in the Gibson lineup, with players frequently being very adamant about their choice being the better one.
The G45 comes to the game wearing a spruce top and walnut back and sides. This guitar was the cheapest version of a Made in USA Gibson acoustic when it launched in 2019. It has since had a second generation come out, but the sound and feel stays pretty much the same.
So, which one would you choose? Check out the video and let us know in the comments.
Enjoy!

Gibson Dove vs SJ-200, The Rematch!

2022 Gibson Dove vs 2023 Gibson SJ-200: Who Wears the Spruce/Maple Combo Better?

This one has been a long time coming. The Gibson Dove and the Gibson SJ-200 are two of the most famous names in Gibson lore. The SJ-200 comes in as the older sibling to the Dove. Debuting in the 1930s, the SJ-200 has been around for almost 100 years. It has changed woods a few times, but the modern iteration of the SJ-200 Standard carries a Spruce top with a Maple back and sides. And it is a po...

2024 Gibson Les Paul Tribute vs. 2019 Gibson SG Tribute

There's been a lot of conversation in the comments of the unboxing video of the 2024 Tribute about the pickups and whether this one is actually a Tribute. A lot of people are of the belief that Tributes have shielded pickups. And some iterations of the Tribute do, but not all of them do. And a good point of comparison is the SG Tribute, which shares a lot of it's DNA with the LP Tribute. Same p...

Thanks for the comparison. I think they sound quite similar. I just got a '68 Dove off Ebay -- sounds quite even, mid-range like yours, - compared to my '64 Country & Western, which is more low-end/boomey and woody, rough sounding. I had to put light strings on the Dove, as there was too much tension - I guess the maple wood produces a more clear/even and distinct sound than the mahogany Gibsons -- and neither of the two sound like my '69 J-45, which is not as loud, but more high end, and has low string tension. My philosophy is the feel of the guitar comes first, and I think the Vintage Gibsons just have that vibe that makes you want to pick them up and play; the newer ones seem to lack this, like they're not broken in yet.

I've got a 1963 Dove, as well as this 2022, and it has a different sound, albeit still definitively a Dove. And I think that's what I think of when I look for the "Dove" sound out of the 2022. Because the other Doves that I own are a little older and they both sound the same. So I'm looking forward to hearing how the 2022 Dove matures, sonically. The SJ-200 is one of those guitars that has a sound that is uniquely SJ-200. It and the Dove have a LOT of similar characteristics, so I'm not surprised that they sounded so similar. But I can also see why people say you need a SJ-200 in your collection. I never really understood that until I got this guitar, because the Epi SJ-200 is very different, sonically.

I just saw that! They used to be $4499, and have gone up to $4999. The SJ-200 Standard is $5499 now. Not sure if that went up or if it's always been that price. But there are some different models that are a little less expensive, like the SJ-200 Studio and, I think, the Rosewood variant of the Studio.

The Hummingbird that I own is a prototype for a limited run that Gibson was doing about 4 years ago. And there's something about that guitar that makes it sound better than any other Hummingbird I've ever picked up. I'm not sure what they did to this one, or if this one is just a ringer, but 13 gage strings on our Hummingbird is absolutely perfect. The Doves are still my favorite, but I can understand the draw of the Hummingbird.

the wider nut width & the deeper neck on the moderns, the placement of the bridge in relation to the soundhole (closer for the 60s version).. but most importantly the age and resonance of the older soundboards (which are probably better cuts of spruce too) on the 60s. 13s (pref bronze) on a 60s Gibson is absolutely unbeatable sound

Fun Fact: the so called "cruse control" was an experimental vacuum system (GM experimented on a lot of Olds models first) and it did NOT fly. Also, the passenger side mirror looks like an add-on. We have a toggle switched set of rectangular mirrors that ARE factory on our 70 exact same model, but had to ADD a round mirror to our convertible model. Great colour for this car.

I'm 99% sure that my father changed out the driver's side stock mirror to make it match the passenger side mirror that he got for the car. This was done somewhere around 1999-2002. I do not believe this car had a factory passenger side mirror, but my dad wanted one because he felt like he needed it while backing up. The cruise control on this car is an aftermarket unit that uses magnets on the driveshaft. And it's not the greatest.

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948 Před 2 měsíci

The one on the SG Tribute is about as low as I would ever go on the tailpiece. It's almost low enough that I want to top wrap it. And I completely support top wrapping LP and SG guitars to avoid the angle and preserve the life of the bridge. I've seen a couple of newer SGs that have bridges that are already collapsing because of the angle (although I also recognize that the modern quality fluctuates enough that this could also be poor bridge build quality).

You should look on Reverb and eBay to see if there are any for sale on there. They weren't super popular in Olive Drab, but there were a decent amount sold.

It looks like a Standard, not a Tribute. They are shipped in soft cases. I have a 2010 Tribute and it doesn't look the same as this one. Only no binding is the same with mine.

Standards, historically, have body binding. The term "Standard" has been added to models, over the years, when they made special editions or limited run guitars that have added things like binding to lower models (like the Studio Standard, which had binding). Tributes and Studios, for the most part, have never had binding on their base models because they are budget minded guitars for musicians that don't want/need the upgraded appearance that the Standard has. Older Tributes, like your 2010, are actually "Studio Tribute" models and usually have an era of guitar attached to that name (like Studio '50s Tribute or Studio '60s Tribute). The stand alone Tribute came out in 2013, if my memory serves me correctly. Even after the stand alone Tribute model came out, there were versions of Studio and Tribute models that were released that used the "Tribute" name on them (Tribute High Performance, '60s Tribute P90, '50s Tribute were a few notable models).

Not all Tributes have had shielded pickups. I'm uploading a video now that will show a deeper dive into the Tribute and compare it to it's closing living cousin, the SG Tribute. Should come out tomorrow.

Since the stand alone Tribute model was introduced in 2013-ish, there have been a few appearance changes. I've seen several models with pickup covers and without pickup covers. I'm not exactly sure why it has changed, if the pickups were still 490R/T models, but it seems like Gibson has just randomly decided to change them at times. Maybe they were just using up excess inventory, at times, and just used whatever they had on hand? The world may never know.

I used to do a year end wrap up to show what guitars I currently had between Christmas and New Year's, but didn't do it this last year because I've been so busy with other things. I might do it early this year as the weather cools off. I usually separate them out and showcase the acoustics and electrics separately.
