I’m currently preparing a bivalve block from keynsham! Just taking a break to watch this

And to think I don’t believe I’ve been here before! The best place I’ve ever found (including Lyme Regis), is Keynsham! The fields are FULL of fossil ammonites and bivalves with an average size of 20cm! The ground is mud with a very thin layer of limestone and mudstone at the surface! It’s brilliant! Although rare I did recently find a piece of marine reptile bone!

I'm thinking of going to Keynsham this weekend, is it possible for you to give any more information? Are there particular fields where you find the fossils, and do you have to dig in the soil for them at all? Or are the ammonites and bivalves loose on the surface? Also, are there any good rock exposures that I can look through?

@@meee3324I know this is too late to be useful since I never got a notification but to answer your question, most fields have fossils but some have more than others. I find the ones near the WheatSheaf Inn are the best since it’s a public footpath. Don’t bother digging the fossils are sitting on the surface of the fields you only have to flip the rocks if you don’t see anything. The walls often contain fossils as well since it’s locally sourced rock but I wouldn’t take any from them since they’re very old. As for rock exposures not really in keynsham but there are some quarries nearby like in wotton under edge (good for echinoids, bivalves and belemnites.) and frome (good for trilobites)
