This limewood log will hold a 1930's brook (now brook crompton) grinding machine in our wood tools workshop. We could leave it plain but why miss the oportunity to play with a vintage Japanese ono (carpenters axe) and chouna (Japanese adze). Rather than hewing it square Robin decided to go for a textured organic flowing look. We can't wait to fit it in the workshop with the old grinder on top. ...

Robin you don’t use angle in sharpening at all? Just flat sharpening outside and inside also?

Notice the water that the stone is sitting in, in order to mess with the temper you have to heat the steel too 240°, if it was anywhere near that temperature he wouldn't have his hand resting on it lol

To all of the people complaining about the toes, I'm just some random kid in the U.S who thought this was cool, so I got a Japanese hewing axe and tried this out. No experience, no skill, and guess what? All my toes are still here, because once you use the full swing of the axe, the axe is lower than your feet, and your feet are on top of the log and not on the side of it.

What's the angle on an axe? I heard that it's often 20 degrees, 20 separately on both sides or 10 degrees that end up producing a 20 degree angle?

Nice video. I have one of your axes and love using it to save time getting a spoon blank ready. It's a shame more people don't work with wood for recreation and mindfulness. I am not very good but have made spoons, wands, slingshots, staffs, sticks, shoe horns and back scratchers...they are not brilliant but people really seem to enjoy them. There is something very calming working with natural materials like wood and leather

I have always thought I would love working with wood but I was so bad at it...I trained as a 3D Designer but when I was in the workshop it was horrific. But since I have discovered carving now I am on the right track. Slowly getting a small kit together but wood working tools are super expensive here (Perth, Western Australia). Love watching your clips.
