Howick Caves, The Churn was created when the outer roof of the cave collapsed sometime in the late 50s early 60s. Yep the story was that the caves were extended to run up to the Hall and that brandy and other highly taxed goods were smuggled up there.

I grew up in Howick, and we all called it the Rumbling CHURN, despite what it says on the maps. Makes more sense, too, it rumbles because of the churning of the water as it passes through a tunnel in the rocks into a large hole. There is a cave entrance at the back of this which is reputed to lead all the way to Howick Hall, although we never had the courage to go more than a dozen yards inside.

Back in 2004 I used to go there often and I went inside that cave at low tide and it's great in there but becomes very low and you need to crawl down on your tummy to go any further, but without a torch it's scary ! I always wondered what the name of this place was called. But does the cave have a name ?
