A Small Park. A Huge Surprise!
Every regional town and city in Australia has a small park that people drive past, but rarely stop to take a good look.
Fotheringham Park in Taree was one I took a look at while waiting to have my windscreen replaced. I first saw this park when making my video on the John Churton Walk on the banks of the Manning river.

Transcript of Victoria Cross Winners
On the left is Dr. Neville Howse opened a medical practice in Taree and worked at Manning river Hospital from 1895 before volunteering to
serve with the NSW contingent in the Boar War. In 1900 he jumped on his horse and charged forward to rescue a young bugler who had been shot in the lower abdomen. Howse's horse was shot and killed, but he put the young man on his back and carried him back to safety after which the doctor helped him recover from the wounds. He was the first Victoria Cross winner by an Australian. He died in 1930.
On the right is Warrant Officer Rayene Simpson. Ray was with the Australia Army Training Team in Vietnam and in May 1969 while with 5th Special Forces Group near the Laotian border when one of his Group became heavily engaged with the enemy, he led the remainder of his company to assist. An Australian Warrant Officer commanding one of the platoons was seriously wounded and the assault began to falter, Simpson, at great personal risk carried the warrant officer to safety. He then returned and with complete disregard for his safety, he crawled forward close to the
enemy and threw grenades into their positions.
A few days later, Simpson's Battalion Commander was killed and a warrant officer and several soldiers wounded. Warrant officer Simpson quickly organised some men and led them forward, where they came under heavy fire. He made several attempts to move forward to retrieve his battalion commander's body, but on each occasion he was stopped by heavy fire.
Simpson alone and still under enemy fire covered the withdrawal until the wounded were removed to safety.

I started this channel for two reasons. Firstly, to allow my family and friends to see why I loved bush walking so much, and secondly, to let people see that basically anyone, including old folks like myself, can get out into the beautiful Australian Bush. In my sixties I completed the Great North Walk, a 250 kilometre walk between Sydney and Newcastle as day walks, and they have been set up as...
A Few Days Around Hobart, Tasmania

Oh, and we visited Mount Wellington ...

There are many great walks on Magnetic Island (just off the coast at Townsville, Qld). We had limited time on the island and the Forts Walk is highly recommended as the one to do. We decided to continue on and around to Horseshoe Bay. The walk starts at the Forts Junction (where the bus can drop you off) just over a kilometre walk to the remains of the Second World War Forts. @@alanhamford2538 Hi. Where there was public transport available I used that, but in the northern half I drove to where I was starting, walked to a certain point and then retur, ned to the car, drove round to another point and walked back to where I reached and returned to the car etc., etc. So in effect, I walked most of it twice!

I watched most of your Great North Walk videos a few years ago when I was planning to hike it. Even though they are getting to the 10-year-old mark, they are the best GNW content on youtube, very concise with none of the BS others engage in. I ended up doing the Great North Walk twice, did it in 9 days northbound in September 2023, and 8 days southbound in May 2024.

That was my Wedding Trip from Rotterdam to Fremantle, we were supposed to board the Australis in Hamburg Germany, but because of a Pilot strike we had to go by Train to Rotterdam and what a trip it was, a 1000 people on the Train and proper to German Railways there left the carriage with food, Drinks and Fags in Hamburg. It was a bloody long trip to Rotterdam and we worried with all the People that the boarding would be a nightmare however it was fast and well organised. We were 21 years old and it was fantastic. Now 50Years + later we went back to Germany halve a dz. times and we thought about the trip with the Ship it is nice with a Plane but nothing can beat the Trip with a Ship.

Fun Fact. Next to that old boat ramp is what looks like a storm drain but it's actually Tarees forgotten creek. Mill creek once ran right through what is now the war memorial park many years ago, it got the name Mill creek because of a flour mill located on its banks. As expansion came and the town grew the creek was culverted, buried and forgotten but still exists

I traveled in october 1970 on the SS Australis from Sidney on the way to Suva when fire broke out in the galley. Flames reached appr. 20 meters into the air over the funnel. My cabin 480was burnt out completely. They managed to stop the fire on a pump driven by the donkeymachine only. I just found a report in my archive of mr. G. Nicolopoulos the Chief Purser stating this issue. Fire didn't start in the afternoon but in the early night/morning. Lifeboats were lowered, nbut at the moment of embarking we got the message the fire is under controle. All passengers stayed on deck for the next days, no meals only bicuits and water. We limped to Suva, the crew throwing all burned items and rubbis over board. In Sava painting the outside of the hull. Got transfeted to P&O liner Oronsy. In Rotterdam new cabins etc. All repairs done.

Haha. The very heavy flywheel made it quite unique. Interestingly, when I converted it to a Corolla 1200, the transfer box in low range would kick into neutral when going steep downhill because, I think, the way the gears were cut they could not handle the backpressure of the 4 stroke. Made for the occasional "interesting" moments!
