A bold composer, a brilliant pianist and an inventive vocalist all rolled into one, Clarice Assad floats freely across musical idioms, drawing on an array of sounds from Amazon forest wildlife to operatic arias. A classically-trained pianist, Assad is deeply rooted in the earthy, folkloric rhythms of Brazil, capturing the attention of international audiences with her stunning talent. The term "world music" is redundant when applied to her style, a reflection of Brazil's musical melting pot heritage of African rhythms mixed with European melodies and harmonies.

About this piece:
“Baião ‘N’ Blues” is an orchestral composition celebrating the vibrant fusion of two diverse musical worlds. Inspired by Brazilian music’s lively rhythms and infused with the soulful essence of American blues, the piece explores cross-cultural musical influences. Juxtaposing Brazilian themes with bluesy inflections, the composition presents a seamless and delightful blend of harmonious colors. Throughout the orchestral journey, a sense of lightness and humor permeates the musical landscape, inviting the audience to engage in a spirited dialogue. Commissioned by KMFA for the University of Texas Orchestra under conductor Douglas Kinney Frost, “Baião ‘N’ Blues” showcases the power of music to transcend cultural boundaries and connect people through the art of listening.
Commissioned by KMFA, Classical 89.5 in Austin, Texas, for its 2023 Draylen Mason Composer-in-Residence initiative.
Premiered September 24, 2023, by the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost.
Dedicated to Lou Ann and Bill Lasher, and the memory of Draylen Mason (2000-2018).

Moça, voce sempre me impressionou. Muito pelo seu trabalho, conhecimento musical extraordinário, pela beleza e inteligencia. Fico pensando como a gente que estuda, passa grande parte da vida esfregando banco de escola nao é valorizado. Pelo pouco tempo que a conheço descobri que seu sucesso nao acontece aqui, mas em outras terras. É lamentável que nossos meios de comunicação não abra espaço para verdadeiro trabalho artístico. Tenho que trocar o canal de tv, ou até mesmo desligar, pra impedir que lixo invada minha casa. Como diria Maria Rita, brasileira não é somente "peito e bunda".Pseudo artistas de qualidade conhecidamente "horrorosa" recebem todo o tempo e espaço da mídia global. Obviamente esse tipo de "doutrinação" tem interesse de manter o populacho longe da cultura que liberta, relegando aos mais aquinhoados os melhores nacos do "prazer" cultural. Desculpe se estendi demasiadamente o texto. E um prazer que meus olhos e ouvidos tem em assisti-la e ouvi-la nesse pequenino aparelho. De qualquer maneira ja tenho os "bilhetes" para Tampa adquiridos onde ficarei pouco mais de uma semana.
