MAXI JAZZ Of FAITHLESS Had INCREDIBLE Taste In Guitars! Bonhams London
www.bonhams.com/auction/30196/the-maxi-jazz-collection/
It's safe to say that anyone who lived through the beautiful dance music phase of the 1990s remembers exactly where they were the first time they heard Insomnia by Faithless!
The late Maxi Jazz was a keen guitarist with sublime taste in guitars and it was a pleasure to visit Bonhams London to see three of the instruments coming under the hammer later this month - a 1957 Fender Stratocaster, a 1954 Gretsch Country Club and a 1953 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top.
Thank you to Fred Lawton, Claire Tole-Moir and the team at Bonhams Popular Vulture for making this video possible.
Until next time
Stay Tuned

The Sound of The 1960s British Folk Revival? The Epiphone Texan

I have always been fascinated by the British Folk Revival of the 1960s spearheaded by guitarists such as Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Martin Carthy and many others from the Les Cousins scene. It occured to me recently that so many of the aforementioned musicians have changed instruments several times throughout their careers. However, there is one man who has kept the same instrume...

Having spent some time with an Eric Clapton signature model - the 000 28 EC - recently, I've been keen to explore more artist models by The Martin Guitar Company. The Most Important Guitar Of The 1990s?

In the 1990s something wonderful happened that led directly to a resurgence of interest in acoustic music and the acoustic guitar in particular. MTV Unplugged! Perhaps the most important of these “acoustic” concerts was performed by Eric Clapton and his band in 1992 at Bray studios - the resulting album would sell over 26 million copies worldwide and become Eric Clapton’s most successful record...
Modern Luthier Acoustic Guitars - Just For Fingerstyle?

These hyper-responsive modern luthier made guitars are all very well - but are they just for fingerstyle players in drop tunings? I’ve been getting this question a lot lately which I see as a good sign that more flat pickers are becoming interested in the sort of guitars I love. So… I put my guitars in standard tunings and had at them with a pick in the name of science. I hope you enjoy the res...
Treating Standard Tuning Like An Open Tuning - Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar

I was feeling inspired this week - there was something happening - I grabbed my guitar and found it in standard tuning. That’s unusual for for me - I’m usually in DADGAD. Obsiously two very well-made instruments and superb playing, but smaller body guitars always sound more "nasal" to me and lacking in authority in the bass, as though trying to compensate by emphasising the lower mid. Why so many people say they are superiour for fingerstyle is beyond me. The dreadnaught wins on all points in my book except nut width, in case the OM features that essential extra mm or two.

    2 marvelous guitars and I love archtops as well as flat tops. For me the style being played here sounds much richer on a flat top. Archtops really come into their own when played with finger picks or a plectrum. Why? I'm not sure but I think that the quick attack, rapid delay response of an archtop favours the immediate hit you get with plastic or tortoiseshell.

    Absolutely beautiful piece and egregious playing! I'm amazed at the lack of scraping when plucking the wound strings. It's something that I've been trying to get rid of for a while now, it drives me nuts 😂 is it the short nails or do you attack the strings at a more perpendicular angle?

    • @MichaelWatts
      @MichaelWatts Před 6 dny

      It takes practice I’m afraid David but it is possible! Honestly this was quite noisy by my usual standards - still getting used to the African Blackwood!

    • @davidereno1871
      @davidereno1871 Před 6 dny

      @@MichaelWatts thank you for your response! I don't see the connection with the wood though? It seems that no matter the angle at which I pluck, the very fact of having longer nails produces the scraping. Am I missing something? By the way I love practicing so don't worry :D

    I was contemplating Michael Chapdelaine last night and listened to Sol y Cervesa, how I learned it, how I hadn’t played it in a long time, and what a special arrangement this is with the afternoon desert storm appearing and vanishing musically.
