We went on a 5 day long dog friendly trip to the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada and WOW!! It was our first trip there and we will absolutely be back.     Hi Natascha, sorry the original plan didn't work out but as a marathon runner, I would not at all say that you dropped the ball like you've stated! In marathoning everything is planned very much in advanced, from the training to the registration (for the big ones, almost a year in advanced). You've learned that very quickly by booking your next marathon right away. I'm about to run my 6th marathon next week, I have many road running races of various distances under my belt and this is what I'd recommend for you; Don't do the virtual marathon before Victoria in the fall. Especially for a new long distance runner it can be too taxing on the body to do 2 all of a sudden and you won't get much benefit. Even the pro marathoners don't usually do more than 2 a year. I believe you can do it, but it won't serve you. I've known people that have ran the NYC marathon when the longest run they've done is 8 miles 😳💀. They did it and they were fine but if you do your training properly you will have a much much more enjoyable and fulfilling experience on marathon day. Your motivation for doing the virtual comes across as having something to show for since you've planned on BMO, but you don't owe anyone anything! I'm confident you can do it, you don't have to prove it to anyone by doing it close to the original one you've planned on. It's even common for people to drop out of races because of injuries and it's a good idea to have enough time to train for the next race. This is what I'd recommend instead to maximize your fitness and time before your Victoria Marathon; sign up for a 5k or 10k race instead of the virtual marathon to test your fitness. There are online conversions that will give you a ballpark marathon time based on these shorter distances. Your 5k or 10k time is a very common stat to have to help with marathon training. Marathon training programs are usually 3-4 months. Before you start your marathon training block, find a 5k or 10k race and train for that as well! This is what the pro and competitive marathoners do. They don't only train for marathon distances, it changes based on the time leading up to their key race on their calendar, and they run shorter races in between. You can see this by even following the pros on Strava. They race between their marathons. Kiera D'amato is one of the best pros to follow on Strava for so many reasons. Training for a shorter distance before you do your marathon will make you faster and fitter! So in summary I recommend: Train for 5k/10k ---> 5/10k RACE---> start 4 month marathon training block---> RACE your Marathon! You're going to have an amazing experience on marathon day! Racing a proper in person race is something special, virtual can be ok but it's really not at all comparable. Good luck and you can do it!!!
