“Life Is All Checkered (Chequered)” - Irish traditional jig on banjo, fiddle, & bouzouki

“Life Is All Checkered (Chequered)” - Irish traditional jig on banjo, fiddle, & bouzouki 🪕 🎻 ☘️ I heard this from Nathan Gourley and Laura Federssen’s album of the same name. I also heard Sorcha Costello’s version on her album “Primrose Lass”. This is much more rudimentary, but I loved the tune so I wanted to do a version myself with some banjo rhythm and bouzouki, as well as, of course, the fi...

“Crib of Perches” or.. “Creel of Perches”? Reel. “Crib of Perches” - reel - I heard this from two different places, well 3. 1. Trad Lad’s album (Are Here Again) 2. Nathan Gourley and Laura Feddersen’s (Life is All Checkered) album - and 3. John Whelan’s (Celtic Roots) Dance album. - I really couldn’t stop thinking about the tune after I heard it, so I’m doing a version here with fiddle, banjo, ...

“I Buried My Wife & Danced On Her Grave” - two days late for Irish Tune of The Week- that’s ok! I really dig this tune. “The Maid I Never Forgot” - this one sounds better than the last one I posted, so I am sharing. It still isn’t perfect, but I’m 8-9 months into learning fiddle and this is as good as I’ll get it before I get more experience. #irishreels #irishreel #irishtraditionalmusic #irishtrad #themaidineverforgot #irishtunes #irishfiddle

Lovely pickup that sounded so good I wanted to let others hear and see it! JJB Prestige 220 Mandolin Piezo Transducer. Made in the USA to a small company. Their overall QC and customer service were stellar, as well as their shipping time. Impressed! I don’t know them, I am not a sponsor (yet 😉). Nothing to prove here except support for a great product! I also just bought one for my Irish tenor ...

Love the transition in this
Black and white camera makes you look shitty. Just a heads up.
You're playing is very good, so there's no need to apologise 😆. The Clareen Oyster is a good banjo. I have one myself. I prefer the nickel strings. My advice would be to try the Puretone banjo strings in a slightly thicker gauge. I find it unfortunate that Clareen have increased their prices on banjos so much. I guess when Dave Boyle (RIP) was still making banjos it kept prices more competitive. I also find Tom is a gentleman who is interested in the customer, their banjo and their needs while Fintan, nice guy and all but is more interested in the business side of things.
Top playing! Subbed :-)
Thanks for the Sub!
So good.
❤ Nice work Gavin. Perth West Australia
Thanks! 😃
Thanks for listening!!!
Thanks, Gavin!
Brilliant!
Great playing :-) How long did it take you to get the triplets so crisp and accurate ?
'The Monk’s Jig' often called 'Sonny Borgan's'.
I learned this tune from this video. Thanks!
Bravo!!!
Just curious, do you use a thinner pick to get those triplets?
First
Thanks for posting all these videos, they're an awesome resource for those of us trying to learn. Playing these tunes "straight" based on the basic tabs found online gives such a very basic rendition, so seeing your modifications & ornamentation is a huge help when working toward a properly stylized version of the tune. As a beginner, I don't have instincts yet to independently figure out where and how to add/change/ornament.
How long have you been on the fiddle now?
Beautiful
High mastery!!!!
Long to go before the thought even peaks its head!
Gavin lovely tune well played I have a clareen special and thinking of upgrading to clareen oyster Just wondering what clareen model you’re playing it has a lovely tone to it ?
Yes, so beatiful :)
Very well played sir.
I appreciate that! Thanks for listening!
Great stuff
Love it
Very beautiful :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice...
Turn the bouzouki down
I guess we all have opinions!
Nice tune and nice play. Thank you :)
Thanks for listening
Superb playing. How was the action and set up when it arrived. Im so tempted to get one
Wow! This recording sounds great.
that's fast! can't wait to play this fast one day
Beautiful.
Brilliant lads! Lovely tune
Love your videos and the music. Keep up all the awesome work and playing, you're very talented.
Great! Thank you :)
What’s the tuning used for this? Standard GDAE ?
Indeed!
Lovely tune, masterfully played. I must play my wooden flute along with this video. But - heavens above! - do I detect that a bit of Maid Behind the Bar has snuck into the B part?
It does sound like it, for sure. But I looked it up on TheSession, and this is the version that they have (so it must be true...)
@@CelticMandoDudeIrish runes are like Relativity: there is no absolute frame of reference - all versions are equally valid.🤗
@@perilouspoozer3749 Also explains why they're sometimes played near light speed...
@@CelticMandoDude indeed. And it’s all about frames of reference. You can listen to an Irish session and conclude that it’s travelling at a reasonable speed but when you try to join in, you find that it’s going at close to light speed and you would need massless fingers and a zero-delay nervous system to keep up with it.
