Now i read many times, not to lay our harakeke cutting left overs at the base ?, Because I believe in this whakataukii, my dad said we do lay the leftover at the base because the birds use it to make nests , the bellbird lives inside the cluster of harakeke as harakeke should grow in whanau groupings, thus the wee birds collect our string thread waste and make their nest- to clarify we only harvest what we need, however the conservation dept, Manaaki whenua and flax works org, all say don't do this, it creates fungi, killing the harakeke, so I was diggin deep into this whakataukii , and ask my 86yr old full blooded Maori dad, he says there shouldn't be much wastage, as many wahine take the Harakeke butts, some they collect the orange red gels and some roots, , the harakeke seed, to tohunga for medicinal purposes, they must be think we dump mountainous piles of it, all my girlfriends only harvest what they need, thus fungi doesn't grow, if the birds pick it up and make their nests in the heart of the cluster, I thought we are helping our environment I certainly loved this, as you reminded me of my dads teachings, I adored this kinaki whakataukii. My Dad passed recently he was a Kaiako of Te Reo. Unfortunately I neglected his teachings and ways. I regret it now. If there was hui etc I would pick him up to stand on the paepae for us. I really miss him. P.s I know a lil bit but I too speak fast. Thank you for telling me you slowed down.
