    In the eleventh round, there's another eight which is a _Countdown_ favorite: LORINERS. Loriners (also spelled lorimers) are workers in iron who made bits, stirrups, and other small metal objects for horses. In the twelfth round, I also spotted PRESIDIO because I live in a city that used to have one, and is now the site of Presidio Park. In the last letters round, they didn't show Dictionary Corner, so they might have missed the two eights: CHROMATE and THEOCRAT. Chromate is an anion that contains chromium and oxygen. In the numbers round, I try to solve one-large games with low targets as "five-small" for an additional challenge, but here that's even easier than the solutions they came up with! 9 + 8 = 17 17 x 8 = 136

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the seventh round, there were a spate of sixes. Along with FASTEN, there was SENATE, SOFTEN, and ATONES. In the numbers round, I bet Carol was trying to find some way of making 34 that retained the 3 to subtract (34 x 25 - 3 = 847). Sadly, there's no 7 either, which would have made this a snap as the target number factors to 11^2 x 7. However, I did find a couple of solutions not already mentioned: 25 x 8 = 200 200 + 5 = 205 205 x 4 = 820 9 x 3 = 27 820 + 27 = 847 25 + 3 = 28 28 x 4 = 112 112 - 5 = 107 107 x 8 = 856 856 - 9 = 847

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the numbers round, I had two alternative solutions: 6 / 2 = 3 50 - 3 = 47 47 x 9 = 423 423 + 10 = 433 9 + 8 = 17 50 x 17 = 850 850 + 10 + 6 = 866 866 / 2 = 433 The latter is a workaround for the fact that one can't divide 50 by 2 to make 25, make 17, and keep the 8 to add on at the same time. In the sixth round, there was also NODALISE.

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the twelfth round, I also saw DAINTIES and had DETAINS for seven. In the last letters round, there was one word to stretch it to a six: TRICAR, an obsolete term (but still in the dictionary) for a three-wheeled car, like the old Reliant Robin. In the numbers round, I always try to solve one-large games with low targets as "five-small", which can be done here as follows: 8 x 7 = 56 56 + 5 = 61 61 x 3 = 183

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the seventh round, there was an eight. I first got MALATE, and that gave me the clue for MALONATE. In the numbers round, I saw Barbara's solution and also had this solution: 75 x 4 = 300 300 + 7 = 307 3 - 1 = 2 307 x 2 = 614 In the eleventh round, there were at least two eights. One is REALTORS, the American term for estate agents, which Susie usually points out when it comes up. That's one reason I noticed it now: I've been trained by watching this show to find the commonly occurring eight- and nine-letter words. Another was LEVATORS, the muscles that elevate a part of the body when contracted.

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the numbers round, I saw Carol's solution before the clock started, so I tried to come up with another solution and found this: 9 x 6 = 54 4 / 4 = 1 54 + 1 = 55 55 x 7 = 385 385 + 100 = 485 In the sixth round, I had DIAMANTE.

    • @nick12345304
      @nick12345304 Před 3 lety

      I did another way for the numbers: (100 + 4) x 4 = 416 + 6 = 422 9 x 7 = 63 422 + 63 = 485

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the first round, I thought you could have "bourees", but the dictionary tells me it's a double 'r'. You can pluralize bourne, however, for BOURNES. In the second round, another seven was HOMINID.

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the eleventh round, as Bill Clinton might have said, "I got a six in that round and it was INHALE." In the twelfth round, nothing but sixes either. I had SCOURS, LISSOM, SCRIMS, and SIMULS. Simuls are simultaneous games, usually used of chess events when an expert player plays several other people at the same time. I'm a bit of a chess nut, so I've analyzed more than a few grandmaster simuls in my time. Scrims are backdrops used in theatre, which can become fully opaque when frontlit and semi-sheer when backlit. One of my favorite uses of scrims occurred in the original Broadway production of the Sondheim/Lapine musical _Sunday in the Park with George_ , where the young George, Georges Seurat's great-grandson, is encouraged to keep at art by Seurat's mistress and muse, Dot. The entire group from the painting _Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte_ comes to life to meet George, and the last thing the audience sees is the fading silhouette of Dot as George intones the marginal notes from her grammar book, "White. A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So many possibilities." In the last round, a couple more sevens are AIRDATE and AVIATED. This numbers round shows why people playing on _Countdown_ should really learn about distributing numbers into equations by addition or subtraction before multiplying. It's almost as necessary as factoring. The simplest solution to the problem is this: 50 + 3 = 53 53 x 8 = 424 9 - 8 = 1 (or 8 - 7) 424 + 1 = 425 And if you want to play a trick shot solution, you can do this: 9 x 7 = 63 8 - 3 = 5 63 + 8 = 68 68 x 50 = 3400 3400 / 8 = 425 Mathematically, this is the same as Carol's solution. Since 68 is 17 x 4 and 50 is 25 x 2, dividing by 8 makes the 4 and 2 fall away, leaving 25 x 17.

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the eighth round, another six that is my particular area of interest is the GENOME. In the ninth round, I had a "dodgy eight" in SHOUTIER. When I looked it up on the online Oxford Dictionary, it redirected me to "shouty", so I don't know if that's a "yes, it's an acceptable comparative" redirect or a "no, you idiot, here's the word you wanted" redirect. In the numbers round, I didn't even see Carol's solution. I thought the "obvious" solution was going to be this: 50 x 10 = 500 4 - 1 = 3 9 x 3 = 27 500 + 27 = 527 Because I thought that would occur to everybody, I looked for an alternative and got this as well: 50 + 9 = 59 10 - 1 = 9 59 x 9 = 531 531 - 4 = 527

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In the numbers round, I saw Carol's solution early on, so I tried for a different one and found these two: 6 + 5 = 11 11 - 7 = 4 25 - 4 = 21 21 x 9 = 189 189 + 100 = 289 100 / 25 = 4 7 x 4 = 28 28 + 5 = 33 33 x 9 = 297 297 - 6 = 289 In the seventh round, there's an anagram of ANTIDOTE: TETANOID. And if you're displaying those kinds of symptoms, you definitely need one.

  • @Nullifidian
    @Nullifidian Před 5 lety

    In round 1, there was an eight: ASSIGNEE.
