I dove this reef right after I dove on the C-56. This was a shallow dive with a max depth of 31 feet (FSW). The fish around Rodmaus Reef were scattered here and there but the Reef was still very beautiful with tons of vegitation and coral with beautiful brown/tan color. I filmed this with my GoPro Hero 2 with an Eye Of Mine flat lens housing mounted on an Eye Of Mine wrist strap. I did this div...

FACT: Without cave training and cave equipment Divers CAN die here. FAC...

My first dive that I ever recorded. This dive was a couple firsts for me. It was my deepest dive ever and my first wreck dive. The C-56 was a WW2 U.S. Navy minesweeper which was donated to the Mexican Navy. The Mexican Navy sunk it in 2000 to make an artificial reef for divers. The wreck lays in 90 ft (FSW) and upwright. Since the wreck is an artificial reef it is not a protected site and you a...

For anyone unaware, this is where the 1973 Mount Gambier cave diving accident happened. This is a sinkhole in Australia, the shaft has a small opening at the top, ~20 feet of air then there is a 118 foot deep (36m) tunnel of water, at the bottom the cave has a mountain of debris that has fallen from the top, this is where the cave splits in 2, at the beginning of the Northwest tunnel there is a cliff which is also where the sign is located, the cave continues in many unmapped winding tunnels and paths, the estimated depth of these tunnels is over 400ft (124m). On May 28th 1973 at about 1:30PM, nine divers went diving in this cave, the group went to the bottom of the mountain, where they planned on going back up, be aware because this is a sinkhole there is very little visible light and the group was using flashlights which stop working very well if there is any debris in the water, the initial dive went smoothly, because they neglected safety procedures and went down the cliff to a unmapped area they ended up becoming trapped, because it was an untouched cave it was very easy to kick up dirt and after entering the northwest tunnel under the cliff they likely had very little visibility, also because of the depth at that point many of them we’re probably suffering from pressure sickness, on top of that the endless cave entrences essentially created a maze. In the end 5 of them would drown, over the many years that followed 3 body’s would be found and 2 would be recovered.

Why couldn’t those Thai soccer kids who were stuck in the cave be rescued from where they walked in? Why did the divers have to use the alternate cave entrance to get to them?

A group of divers went into a cave- not terribly deep. As they went in, wash from their flippers behind them stirred up the silt deposited over centuries, and it entirely clouded the water. They did not see this until they turned around- they had not set a cord to follow out to the entrance. I believe all perished- some had found chimneys with small air pockets at the top, which prolonged their agony. How frightening!

I wish almost all "don't do this" warnings were like this: A nice explanation of why you shouldn't do it with various points to avoid that sense of: "So I defy the danger and I do it" because, data in hand: If you say to someone not to do something and then you turn away without saying anything more, you can be sure that he will do it. Clearly this sign was designed with this effect in mind

The world most experienced divers often don't beat a cave system. They say snipers are the most harshly trained people, but I am sure cave divers are tougher. The problem is you cannot beat the elements, especially not knowing how old and deserted it is, in there you're just a misplaced bunch of molecules.
