Beautiful and so clever!
This was such a great show
6:47 Little did Richard know that Des was to be the name of his two successors
I love how that Kitty has a real human name
I myself had 388 figured out in the second numbers round, though I do it a bit differently. I started with the 8/2 to get 4, then I multiplied it by 100 to get 400. Then (9+2+1) = 12, and then subtracted that from the 400 to get the 388. But to see Diane get to it with only five numbers rather than all six like I did...no "floater" there, it was well played!
You are using it incorrectly for dividing ÷This is what divide actually looks like

@Diane Scougall What is your source for the caption information?
I’m not sure I understand the question - caption, as in “Countdown 11th October 2001”, or the Closed Captions/Subtitles?
@@dianescougall2663 the video title. There are multiple comments stating the video is this date or that number. Only one of you can be correct. I'm trying to make sure that this video's pedigree is correct.
@@alandunstan5485 It was 11th October 2001. It was filmed on Wednesday 12th September 2001, and broadcast on 11th October. Back when I went by a different surname :-) It’s easy to find the broadcast dates for the series. Here’s just one cite: wiki.apterous.org/Diane_Dootson
@@dianescougall2663 Thank you very much for the link. I have a database file of 4,343 numbers puzzles for: Countdown (BBC) 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (BBC) Letters and Numbers (Australia) des Chiffres et des Lettres (France 3) that CZcams channels have uploaded. With the lists at the link you provided, I can verify that the episodes are what they are purported to be.

Hi Diane, what a great memory.
cute
7:24 “That’s sort of cheating a bit.” Why? If he speaks Greek, who cares how or why he acquired the ability? The point is he’s multilingual and belongs on the Yes tribe, much more so than the blonde who doesn’t know the difference between Spanish and French.
@Drew Conway I hear what you're saying MAN💪 We gave em the vote and look what trouble that has lead to. Some of them now are running the countries with the best outcomes in the covid19 pandemic, but hey men will make it look like they did it. What is the source of your information? What would the series and episode numbers be if your info is correct?
In the first round, another eight-and proof that the botany course I took wasn't a complete waste of time-was MESOCARP. It's the middle layer of the pericarp of a fruit. In the second round, an anagram of UNLISTED is INSULTED. In the third round, another seven was HOATZIN, a very primitive type of bird whose chicks have claws on their wing digits and a tooth they use to break through the eggshell. In the fifth round (first numbers round), there was a way to get the target number, but not via 67 x 7. This is the solution: 7 x 5 = 35 35 - 6 = 29 29 x 4 x 4 = 464 464 + 5 = 469 (Coincidentally, 469 was the same target as the last four-large game I played at the Pencil and Paper Games website. The two small numbers were 3 and 2, and it does have at least one solution.) In the sixth round, an anagram of FLOATER is FLOREAT, which is a bit of Latin used in laudatory speeches to convey the wish that the institution or person will flourish. In the seventh round, I had GUILTED for seven and SEDULITY for eight. In the eighth round, I had the biochemical term KINASE for six and SNAKIER for seven. I always look for comparatives when -IER and -IEST come up. That ninth round was hilarious. Needless to say, I got the same alternative as in round six. In the second numbers round, I saw your solution, but also had this alternative: 100 + 2 = 102 102 / 2 = 51 51 - 8 = 43 43 x 9 = 387 387 + 1 = 388 In the eleventh round, I also had Keith's AMUSING, but a couple of sixes were SAYING and DISMAY. In the twelfth round, there's another biochemical term and an anagram of OPERATES in PROTEASE. In the last letters round, there were a couple of zoological words: CERVID for six (a deer), and LACERTID for eight (one of a large family of lizards). Also RECITAL and VERDICT for sevens. In the last numbers round, I had the same idea but used a different approach: 9 - 6 = 3 3 + 1 = 4 6 x 4 = 24 24 + 1 = 25 25 x 25 = 625

Brilliant
What was the atmosphere surrounding the studio like? I imagine very bleak since this was just after 9/11
This episode (and the ones before and after) were actually filmed on September 12th 2001. It was a very strange day all round. My clearest memory is of the "Falling man" photo in the newspaper I read on the train to Leeds.
@@dianescougall2663 Must have been tough for the Countdown team, as this is one of the hazards of producing shows ahead of transmission. Today in 2019 Countdown is produced months in advance. As I type this now in August 2019 I know the current Countdown production are filming the late November shows of 2019.
Richard Osman is charming, knowledgeable with a sly sense of humour. Top man!
