Why Don't You Take All The Lipedema Fat Out? - The Elston Clinic
All surgeries come with risks and benefits. The goal of lipedema reduction liposuction surgery is primarily functional and helps to restore mobility and decrease pain. For many patients, there is also a secondary cosmetic benefit of having slimmer arms and legs that can appear more shapely, or just more in proportion to their body.
When removing fat it's tempting to take as much as possible because patients hope that the more diseased fat that is removed, the better they will feel. In our experience, higher volumes of fat removed don't necessarily mean that you will feel significantly better afterwards. However, we do know that the more fat we take out, the more likely you will be to have loose skin after your lipedema liposuction.
We try to explain to most patients that there is often a balance between achieving pain control and symptom relief without going so far that you will absolutely have a bunch of loose skin. You should not trade one problem for another.
Ask your plastic surgeon if they think you will need skin removal surgery and if it's possible to avoid it. Ultimately, skin removal is a personal decision and scars can be forever. You are always able to take out more fat, but once you have a scar from skin removal, you can't get rid of it.
Lipedema causes painful and heavy feeling fat to accumulate in the arms and legs as well as the trunk. Liposuction is the best known long term therapy for lipedema patients. Learn more about how we treat lipedema and our prices for self pay patients HERE: elston.clinic/liposuction-for-lipedema

Lipedema and Skin Tightening Devices - The Elston Clinic

Do we use skin tightening devices for our lipedema surgeries? Many patients ask if we can avoid skin removal surgery by using devices that deliver energy under the skin to help stimulate contraction and tightening of the skin. Some of these devices can provide good results in the hands of surgeons, but we have concerns about burning lymphatic vessels as well as the possibility of hurting the al...

  • @questioneverything1776

I would like for you to consider that perimenopausal women starting around the age of 35 on up or mid 40s if they’re having some of these symptoms of fibromyalgia, restless legs, difficulty sleeping body pains that it can also be from and/or coincide with perimenopause and going into menopause relating to hormonal changes and estrogen deficiency. With these women, they may need hormone replacement therapy instead of a bunch of drugs thrown at them, like gabapentin or antidepressants which have significant side effects. Physicians need more training in perimenopause and menopause and how the loss of estrogen affects the structure and function of all of women’s body organs. Women are suffering during this timeframe and being gaslit by healthcare providers instead of getting to the root issues of a lot of these symptoms. If we know that lipedema has an Inflammatory and hormonal component then maybe some of this development in the later years of a woman’s life may have to do with the changes in hormones and simply replacing those hormones may significantly reduce inflammation and body pain, and help with lipidema. This should be studied. Not only that but HRT, using FDA approved bioidentical hormones, can significantly reduce heart disease, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis as well as decrease that inflammatory component.

This explains a lot. As a kid I was a little chubby but not obese. I was less than 20 lbs over what I was "supposed" to weigh. But as a 7-8 year old my calves would not fit in my winter boots. My mom had to take me to the local cobbler, circa 1965, and he cut a chunk out of the back of my boots and sewed in a piece of elastic so it would go around my calf. I was always extremely active, played sports constantly bike riding and swimming and always had fat legs and lower abdomen. I hated wearing dresses because my legs looked so fat. At 14 years old I was wearing a size 12-14 5'3" and about 125 lbs. Thicker than the rest of the girls but not a huge difference. My mom had tried everything, gymnastics, dance lessons, exercise classes. No one could understand why I could never get smaller, especially in my legs. I always had fat knees. During my teens I marched in a drum & bugle corps. Marching caused my too big thighs to rub together and they would get galled. Girls that were obviously much fatter than me didn't have that problem. Why were my thighs so fat? When I was a kid also my legs would just ache at night. I would get out of my bed and lay on the cool wood floor for relief. After age 18 I began to really struggle with weight and have ever since. I'm now 67. June 25 of last year I started eating carnivore. I've lost 100 lbs and all that swelling an inflammation I had all my life is gone. I'm seeing bone and vascular structure I didn't know I had. I was adopted at birth and found both sides of my birth family. My birth mom is a stick and my 5 siblings are all normal size and weight. My birth dad passed away long ago but my 2 sisters and one of the 3 brothers are like me. One sister is not fat but thick. The other does keto, take insulin and other type 2 meds and still struggles to get her glucose under 200. She has had toes removed. One brother is worse than her. Legs removed, uncontrollable type 2, just went into a nursing home and younger than me. I can absolutely attest to the fact that the genetics come from the paternal side. I don't want/can't afford surgery at this point. I'm going to continue to eat carnivore and lose excess weight and it's working. In the past I would get smaller and the scale would agree, but it was never like this. Parts of me are becoming very lean and the fat is accumulating in pockets, like trash waiting to be taken out. Always before I was smaller but still thick and solid. Now these fat pockets are like a squishy chicken breast in a baggie. Weight loss has never been like this before, and I've lost over 100 lbs twice before this 100, and the 50-80 range too many to count. The non scale wins of carnivore are immense. I would gladly volunteer for a study if you need data, I'm the proof of everything you said and showed here. I just remembered I would stand in front of the mirror at age 15-16 and notice the bulge on the outside of my thighs right below the hip. I would take my hand and push them in and instantly looked smaller. But no amount of leg exercises or dieting ever mattered. I wanted to go in the military in the 70's but could never make the weight. I could never lose those last 12-15 lbs. Now I see why and this all makes sense now that I can see the big picture. Wow.....

I stopped growing hair on my legs around menopause time and very little on my arms, mostly peach fuzz. I didn't know that I had Lipedema until 6 months ago. Was dismissed by all doctors about my pain. Always told that I'm obese and to lose weight and I'd feel better. I had to research Lipedema myself and educated my doctors or I'd still be suffering without any hope for relief. The fat shaming needs to stop and doctors needs to listen more to what their overweight female patients are say. It's like they go completely tone deaf as soon as an overweight person walks into their office.

I’m 56 and on Medicare secondary to Chiari, EDS, and all of the bonus co-morbitities😉. From my understanding lipedema is not a covered expense by Medicare. Can you shed some light on this? Also thanks so much for being so down to earth and caring to this patient population.

You're welcome. Medicare does cover lipedema surgery. I recommend using coverlipedema.com for assistance
