I do have some rot from sand/dirt in the frame and it looks like your frame has some spots with dirt in it from the videos. I would pressure wash those out and then spray cavity wax or internal chassis coating (thin, zinc rich paint) once done.

    Driving with rear axle disconnected will work provided you engage the centre diff lock and make sure the handbrake drum is secured using washers or spacer on the 4 propshaft bolts & nuts. Or remove front UJ and use existing flange. Not ideal for a long journey tho & steering will be heavier. Drain the REAR DIFF, if bits drop out you have to disconnect & possibly remove halfshafts, otherwise monitor it at every fuel stop!

    Brass bung on the thermostat housing but still got the original crappy plastic one on the radiator - a sign of past failure? I’d replace all the plastic bits in the cooling system so they don’t randomly crack on you. Aftermarket metal should last forever, genuine new plastic should do a decade. As for new pattern plastic vs brittle original plastic I wouldn’t trust either.

    Not bad condition at all. LHD examples used to have higher value than RHD I believe, as they're quite rare in the UK and people with second homes on the continent would snap them up to use over there. Not sure if that's still the case?

Once you see the factory paintwork on the chassis it can't be that bad. The rest depends on the servicing. Seal kit for steering box but you would have to have access to a workshop to fit it with any degree of success. Some folk have fitted the output seal on the vehicle after removing the drop arm but I tried twice and removed it which is a PITA. Viscous coupling and potentially tensioner too plus always good to have a water pump & P gasket as spares, check if water or coolant has been used?? Nice original defender. Rebuild mine but lost interest in it. Still have it. Only done 75k miles in it.

    Condition is great, Looks fantastic, none of those leaks look major, much less than my 1996 300tdi at 216000 miles! With those bits sorted you mention it looks good to drive back.

    Nice purchase mate, what’s happening with your others? Also, when you mention the potential at 11:49 you say “still” just as your cap comes into view🤣🤣🤣

    Maybe of interest to you, my 2006 LHD (registered 04 of 2006) TD5 has the same gearbox drain plug. You may notice that the bell housing bolt/wading plug/hole arrangement is a bit different? I’d be interested in a comparison. Great find that, looks tidy!

      Hmm interesting. I never really picked up that there was a changeover as my 2003 has the large bolt drain plug. The diagrams say it was partway through 2004. The Td5 bellhousing is different than the 300Tdi, even though the gearbox is the same (albeit input shafts are different also), so the one in the video seems to be the same as my 97 300Tdi

      @@lrworkshop I thought it was interesting so compared it to the old man’s 2004 TD5 110, registered 09/2004 and that has the old 32mm drain plug and different bell housing arrangement (to mine). Wonder when exactly the switchover took place, and the reason for it

    • @lrworkshop
      @lrworkshop Před 5 dny

      Looking at the diagrams, bellhousing changed at 6A712307 and drain plug at 4A678558. 300Tdi bell housing was the same all the way

      Looks like you’ve found a gem there! Absence of rust due to dryish climate is impressive. Yeah, fluid checks, perishables like hoses, and it cd be good to go. Don’t fancy the lack of acceleration and going up hills though, with all that extra weight on board. Tyre pressures? Great vid, look forward to the next instalment !

    Did row spec have egr blanked... definitely would want to get some continuity checks on those temp senders, only figured the thermostat is wired up through the egr recently, 3 wires to the engine harness but some missing without egr, if your gonna drive I'd run a bypass - nice to see that fuse box / wiper motors got hot leads, weather through europe can be scary. All that plate on a rover diff, i guess it needed to get to through to some knarly places.

      Cheers! Yes EGR blanked from the factory and none of the extra wiring
