    Steve, nice design Recommend that you capture the key dimensions of the geometry for both sides. SendCutSend would make these up for about $2 a part in low quantity (including all sized holes and slots). Did you buy standard standoffs to set the plates apart? That would make it all easy to put together. Also recommend you look into shoulder bolts to hold down the gears.

    • @stevendouglas6594
      @stevendouglas6594 Před 15 dny

      Yes---I use standoffs for all sorts of things. If I knew I could get all the dimensions right after I made one that would run and run well--I'd give SCS a try---LOL---I don't measure anything---I start with a center line , set the wheel where I think it should go, then I aline the gears and glue them to the surface, drill and tap the holes and pop the gears off and clean off the glue--put it back together and see how smooth it will run.

The Iowa was off the coast of the Japanese home land shelling the ever living hell out of them at that time. Fingers crossed !! I noticed a MTH Trolley motor/truck on your track . I have one that barely runs and I’m not sure why . Have you ever taken them apart and if so was it somewhat easy ? I made an MU set using said motor and it ran great for a few years then one day not so great . I would love to get it up and running again .

    • @stevendouglas6594

      The reason for the chain is the time frame I'm trying to recreate ---erector set gears and chains, lots of oil and lots of noise. Everything I make , I make in the Pre War fashion. I ""try"" to put myself in the mind of 13 year old kid, during the depression, War clouds over Europe and dad making just enough money for the family to get by. Maybe yeah have a cheap little train set and of course you love it to death and with out the extra money you make stuff to add to it---my elevated is made from scrap lumber that we found. I try to really live the time but I'm damn glad I didn't have to---Try ServoCity---they sell all kinds of nylon gears and chain--something I may try someday in a drive unit. Gears, chain and pitch mess me up ---I need somebody to explain it all to me over a couple of beers.

Go for it, you'll never learn if ya don't try---and let me know what you've learned when you do. The MTH trolley motors ---I know nothing of the workings of an electric motor --the two I have are just about new but where that loop hooks to the axle , it lets the motor sit so low it grounds out---on both of them, and I don't know why. I put a piece of heavy gauge wire in the loop to hold it up and it runs fine--but that ain't right--I'm missing something ---but I don't now what.

      Yeah, what's going on right now has got me distracted from Empire Building. I bought a drive for a Post War 51, it's a 2-4-2 diesel switcher . I think this might be a very good conversion from 0 to standard. I intend to take off the lead and trailing truck and cut the frame back to the base of the motor. We'll see how well this works. For 25 bucks, I'm not out anything but my time.
