My opinion, to live a very comfortable lifestyle, nice place to stay, food to eat, adventures traveling, nights out - just typical retiree stuff - not tourist hit the bar every night and party. Minimum is 1M BAHT to start - that's 800k BAHT in the bank to satisfy retirement visa. 200k remaining for 3 months in country while you find a place to stay and get settled. 80-100K BAHT a month to live on. Don't plan on making any money in Thailand unless you already have that setup BEFORE you relocate. AND remember, if you come here to retire, you're not supposed to be working anyway and legally can't. You have that bare minimum you will live very comfortably and not want for much unless you are a very high lifestyle person with diners and dates all the time. If you have expensive habits like scuba diving and other sports you really want to enjoy - bring even more money. It might be cheaper here in the "Land of Smiles." This said it still cost money to live and of you want anything remotely Western/European standard it's the same price you pay now or even more for equal quality. Cars are twice the price here in Thailand, even used ones. I wouldn't live here without a car to drive, need that air conditioner, it's ravaging hot here in the summer. Well maybe in Bangkok you don't even want a car, too much traffic, plenty of transportation available. Your mileage may vary on these statements. Wish everyone the best that wants to retire here. Took me 14 years of planning, investing, saving money. Retired here at 50, living the dream, have never looked back!

This guy's math is so wrong on so many levels. 1) 25 years of expenses upfront for a 55 year old individual? 2) my investments earn income. 3) pensions and old age income isn't included 4) The average US retire might have 100,000 and most aren't sleeping on the train tracks.

Would love to learn more about these groups(other then IT related roles) that companies are hiring Expats in Thailand for. Especially if they are not reducing your income to Thai pay rates just because you are living there. Even igloo is saying to customers they are trying to attract that they have to pay less for labor for Expats then working remote in our home countries so we are losing value by using them versus a overseas coming paying us what we used to be payed back home.

I was in Karon Phuket in hot season this year, i have chronic body pain, particularly in my shoulders and in Australia i take "celebrex" pain killers most day plus analgesics. In Karon the pain went, and i did not take the pain killers. i did have a daily massage. I did not mind the heat at all. I am 75 and retired but have too many commitments here to move even though i can easily afford it. I will be back in September and should anything happen here to change my situation, i will be straight off to Thailand.

A question related to this: I love Thailand, but have never lived there, and wonder what it's like when you wake up in Bangkok, not on Khao San road or a room in the Shangri-La, but on the 30th floor of a condo in a suburb? What does your day look like? That has to be different.

Have you heard of a little something called "Inflation"? All these "I retired early" videos will not age well. US/UK/CN inflation will spread all over the world. SE Asia lags by a few years, but prices will be the same between the East and West. In a few Yeats, Bangkok COL will be the same as CBD Singapore, this is globalization.

Thailand = Vietnam = Philippines = Malaysia = Mexico = Belize = Costa Rica = (Insert developing nation). The only difference is there are more gatoeys in Thailand than in Malaysia. Al the problems farang run from follow them, with a lag, to all 3rd world nations. Every single thing these guys say can be exactly applied to Mexico, Mexico City, Mazatlan, La Ventana Baja... There are no differences, the individual is the only variable and their financial situation is probably the biggest difference in the life experience. Give any dude $100 mil and living in Miami, Vegas, LA, NYC will be the same as living in Thailand.

Another Great video! Loved your field trip to the dispensary a while back. I've been following you for over a year and it's finally time for me to retire there. I'm retired military and 42. I make more than enough on retirement pension, but I'm not old enough to meet the retirement age (50). I really don't want to move there and risk the border runs. The 5 year elite Visa ($25k USD) almost defeats the purpose of moving to an affordable country. Are there any exceptions, or am I going to spend the next 8 years nervous at the border? Maybe even share an agency that will spend time with non-elite peasants like me?

Thanks for all the great videos. Chris you said to write a comment. So here is my comment about our frustration about our Thailand retirement dreams just being dreams and not becoming true. If you have any advise for us, I look forward to hearing them. . My husband and I tried to get a retirement visa and hired a visa company and were told it is now too difficult to get a bank account in Thailand and you can't get your retirement visa without a bank account- so now what. If we can't get a bank account we can't start the process to stay in Thailand.. First barrier or road block is how do we get past the bank account issue? It was, and still is, our impression that the visa company would help with the full process to acquire our retirement visa. The visa company explained to us we would have to go talk to the banks on our own - Not sure how we can do this since we don't speak the language and our impression was that the visa companies help with the bank as well as immigration! We are feeling very frustrated and let down that our dreams to retire in Thailand are slipping away due to all the red tape and regulations to receive the Thailand retirement visa. We are getting to old to do visa runs as we would like to have somewhere to call home and at the moment wondering if that should be back in Canada. My husband and I are in our 60's so we would like to find our forever home soon. We don't want to return to Canada but feeling that it might we our only choice as the help we received or lack of help, just was huge let down. We keep checking the regulations and visa requirements and hoping that we can find someway to make the dream of retiring in Thailand come true, but nothing yet. Thank you again Chris for all the work you do and reading my comment.

He says your income would have to be quite high to be in the higher tax brackets but you only have to be over 54 thousand US dollars to get to 30 percent. That is much much higher tax vs the US at the same income levels. Understandable considering normal income levels over there but if you are making US level income you're gonna be paying higher taxes in Thailand it would seem. I'd also love to get confirmation that the tax brackets are handled the same was as in the USA. Meaning only the money that is in a given bracket is taxed at it's respective rate. For example, if I made 60000 US dollars there, that would put me in the 30% bracket. In the US, only the money that is in that bracket is taxed at that rate. Not the whole 60000. I'm guessing it's the same but this is an important thing to confirm. If the whole thing is taxed at that 30% then that is way way higher a rate. This isn't to say that the lower cost of living couldn't still offset that but it at least closes the gap on the cost of living difference. Thanks for the video. I do like these types of videos. I'm really anxious to see a follow up video regarding how the new tax law affects expats simply bringing money to Thailand or even just using Foreign credit cards. Though I'm guessing to really know how it is working, we'll need to wait for tax time next year.

Great video Chris. I would like to see a lot more videos like this. Also, you have made so many videos it can be hard to find a recent video on a subject. I recommend every six months to one year put out a summary video of moving to Thailand subjects. Maybe a 15 to to 20 min video where you would spend two minutes talking about getting heath insurance, go here and provide a link to your latest video. Want to get a drivers license, go here for info. Want to rent a place, go here and a link to your latest video. But all your subjects can get stale with time. So it would be nice to have a summary video every six months to a year. Great work and always love the content.
