Memories of Murder (2003) - Ensemble Staging
zhlédnutí 1,7MPřed 8 lety
How do you emphasize to the audience that something is important? Well, you could always cut to a close-up, but how about something subtler? Today I consider ensemble staging - a style of filmmaking that directs the audience exactly where to look, without ever seeming to do so at all. NO SPOILERS. Vancouver Never Plays Itself

Perhaps no other city has been as thoroughly hidden from modern filmmaking as Vancouver, my hometown. Today, it’s the third biggest film production city in North America, behind Los Angeles and New York. And yet for all the movies and TV shows that are shot there, we hardly ever see the city itself. So today, let’s focus less on the movies and more on the city in the background. Press the CC bu...

One of the many pleasures of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” (2011) is that the shots feel both tightly composed and weirdly unpredictable. I've long noticed that the,Keaton and Harold Lloyd comedies alongside with their leading ladies,in spite of the action and technicalities of the humor ,manage to also be far more romantic than many so called straight romantic movies.

this is part of a grander reason as to what makes a movie good or not, the creator/director's intentions with it: if they only want to minimise costs and maximise revenue, they have no care, no passion, no enthusiasm for the movie which greatly shows in the lack of quality, but with jackie chan, similar to great creators (van goph, motzart, etc), they have passion and joy for their creation; they don't do it for profit but for their legacy, because they simply want to make something great and so they do

Video essay has now become such an oversaturated form on yt but when I come back here I get to see the form doing what it does best - these video essays are short films that discuss film in a way only film can. I think focusing more on showing the visual comedy, rather than dunking on a more audible approach is a waste of time. they are two different forms of comedy, and because one focuses more on jokes and funny dialogue, it doesnt take away that the movie is still a comedy movie. I dont see why the overwhelming majority like this take. I think you detract from your point by trying to belittle one style in order to elevate the style you prefer.

    1. “Therefore” or ‘BUT’! (Between every beat) 2. “Meanwhile, back at the ranch” (have at least two stories happening in parallel) 3. Every story you tell is a mini film… make it with great care and attention to detail, and it will be loved forever!

I wonder if anyone in the industry will (or has) ever acknowledge the impact this video had. Sure, film scores aren't really where they were pre-2010's, but the noticeable jump in quality since this video released is hard not to recognize. Marvel movies still use ambient songs but they've made their themes and motifs more prominent. Huge blockbusters like Barbie and Joker have returned to having unique musical identities and scores that you can listen to like an album. Movies like TMNT: Mutant Mayhem and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish were very open to experimentation that reflect the movie's style. Smaller budget movies like Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have returned to having noticeable ideas through quiet reservation. Even something that feels as small as Abigail has identifiable music throughout the movie you can hum or whistle afterwards. Film soundtracks by and large are no longer just "noise". They're being seen as another important step in the filmmaking process that cannot be skipped over. As someone who was incredibly bothered by the direction movie music was headed in the 2010's, thank you.

I don't know rick... this complexity is unnecesary and tells so little compared to the acting and dialogues, for example. This may bull's feces and may just apply to this movie... Same with your other video about overcomplicated geometries in moving images.

I wonder, I know you addressed the musical scoring as “safe” but couldn’t you also attribute it as being “smart” as well. Superhero films are so much about the characters, wouldn’t a bombastic score conflict with that identity? I know there are recent action movies that carry a beautiful score, Dune 1&2 being the immediate examples, but I feel there’s a different goal with those movies. I don’t know, school me if someone has a meaningful response. 🙏🏼 To preface, I love films & everything about them; from orchestration to photography & narrative. No partisanship here with the comic book feud. Please don’t eat me alive comments.
