    Dave Swarbrick and the rest of Fairport Convention have been a light house for me since my college years '66-'70. I saw them play in Philadelphia and have listened to their folk rock psychedelic synthesis as an inspiration to playing. "Dirty Linen", "Eastern Rain", "All Be Thankful" and "Sir Patrick Spence" come to mind, along with, "Who Knows..." Thanks for posting.

    "Maggot" is actually a 16th-17th century term meaning a short, lively dance tune similar to a whim or fancy.

    Idiotic comment from the Guardian. Is the folk music of Cameroon "arthritically black"? The English scene is perfectly open to anyone who wants to join in, and British musicians are generally on the left and engage in all kinds of cross-cultural projects. EFM emerged from a largely white culture, and I can't see any reason why it should be in some way shamed and cancelled.

    I had a wonderful hour talking with Swarb in the back room of his house in Coventry before he moved to Wales. He was keeping warm in front of a coal fire whilst dressed in a long white nightgown. I had a chat with Sam recently and he told a great story about meeting him in the same house whilst Swarb was dressed in the same nightgown! So funny...

    DADGAD is the gift that keeps on giving. It makes so many wonderfully beautiful and unique sounds possible. Been playing for 30 years and I still find lovely quirks of the tuning daily.

    • @renderizer01
      @renderizer01 Před rokem

      Same here. DADGAD became my defacto standard tuning almost exactly thirty years ago (by way of a short, temporary detour via dropped D). I sometimes use a few others like DGDGCD but at the end of the day I'm tuning back to DADGAD. It's the tuning that I speak the best. Much, much better than standard tuning by now.

    • @jtpinnyc
      @jtpinnyc Před rokem

      @@renderizer01 Over the last couple of years I have had the tuning DADEAE compete equally for my attention with DADGAD. I happened upon it whilst looking for a way to adapt a harp piece for guitar and become instantly addicted. I now find that when doing guitar arrangements, if it doesn't work so well in DADGAD it'll work great in DADEAE and vice versa.

I play Rock,Blues-Jazz/Fusion & I find I get the best results by listening to music played by other instruments!!! Dave Swarbrick was a true original & I can't understand why his life & music aren't studied as a university campus!!!?

    Lyrics : Hush awhile, hush awhile, sleep now for me. Lay yourself softly if my babe you be, Or did some fay creeping from your crib steal you sleeping And leave me a creature that's nothing of me? My bairn was often silent and would sleep through half the night. And he greeted me every morning with a smile so full of light, But now you are much altered and do bawl the whole night through, So hush a while, my darling, so I might know it's you. Hush awhile, hush awhile, sleep now for me. Lay yourself softly if my babe you be, Or did some fay creeping from your crib steal you sleeping And leave me a creature that's nothing of me? Your father says you're not his own nor any child of man's, But I think you have your father's smile, your father's gentle hands, And I pray that you will love me like your father used to do, So hush awhile, my darling, so I might know it's you. Hush awhile, hush awhile, sleep now for me. Lay yourself softly if my babe you be, Or did some fay creeping from your crib steal you sleeping And leave me a creature that's nothing of me? Your skin was like the lily fair, as soft as winter snow, Not like some screaming devil with his scarlet face aglow Who wails across the wind's soft sighs that creep the casement through, So hush a while, my darling, so I know it's you. Hush awhile, hush awhile, sleep now for me. Lay yourself softly if my babe you be, Or did some fay creeping from your crib steal you sleeping And leave me a creature that's nothing of me? If your mother couldn't love you, though a fairy babe you be, I would take you to the forest and I'd leave you 'neath yon tree, But while you are all I have, love, I still will cleave to thee, For whatever else you are, love, still your mother's love you be. Hush awhile, hush awhile, sleep now for me. Lay yourself softly if my babe you be, Or did some fay creeping from your crib steal you sleeping And leave me a creature that's nothing of me?
