      Hello John, Life can sure be busy. I can appreciate being stretched for time and missing one's videos. In this past year I have found it difficult to find time to watch our friend's videos and have unfortunately missed many. It is sad to see all the Ash we have lost, I have a number yet to cut around our house in in some fence rows. A neighbour just dropped off some Ash logs for me to saw into lumber for him. He has/had a beautiful stand of Ash at the back of his place. It reminds me of all the beautiful Elm we cut because of Dutch Elm Disease when I was a kid. We were in your neck of the woods last weekend. A family member invited us on an ATV ride with the Frontenac County ATV Club. We went from just North of Verona to Wheeler's Pancake House. It was a great trip and the pancakes were awesome! As always, it was great to hear from you. All the best!

    Same Brite Bore cleaning kit I purchased...in 1967 ...possibly earlier. So what is the scope...is it a Weaver 4 power? I have 3 Cooey 22...and 5 Cooey shotguns...one is a goose gun with a 36 inch barrel....in mint condition....and very accurate. I used to shoot with a group of chiropractors who had a hunt camp. After a day of blasting clay pigeons, my shoulder would be black and blue....and occasionally it bled. If you can't take a groundhog with one shot you should get some serious training. I took 38 from the farm where I grew up. They could be dangerous to farm equipment due to holes and mounds of earth. In grade 11, I took a Ranger 22 long rifle derringer to school...on my lunch hour I took it to a nearby gunsmith and a day later paid him $5 for adjustments to the hair trigger on it. Times have changed....take a gun to school these days and you could get into real trouble! Later just out of the army I had to take a hunting course at the end of which we had to take 7 shots at a small target. I had 5 shots in the bulls eye...and the rother two missed...until I pointed out to the instructor that two of the holes were slightly oval. Made my day!

      Greetings, An errant thumb swipe sent my last reply erroneously... Love the stories from the good old days. Sounds like you have an incredible collection of Cooeys! I can remember reading about and dreaming of shooting a Cooey Goose gun (and of course with Imperial ammunition). My father had a friend that duck hunted with a Cooey Single Shot, he kept two shells between his fingers and could reload incredibly fast. I bet you had some fun with your friends at the hunting camp, I can remember those bruises... You must have been quite a good shot in your day, that's a lot of ground hogs with a 22, and those 7 shots in 5 holes, wow! Thanks for reaching out and saying hello. All the best, Paul

    • @charleygarth
      @charleygarth Před 3 měsíci

      @@OutothehousewithPaul Old age is knocking on my bones....I will weep the day I sell off my collection of guns but no one in the family is interested in them. Rather than put up with all the tire kickers (so to speak) I might give Ellwood Epps a call as they are about 20 minutes from here (Bracebridge)and buy collections. One can spend a fortune on guns but in the end simple guns and a good shot can do all that is necessary. You cannot hunt today without a course taken or a hunting license at least newer than about 8 years, in order to get a new license. I took up archery too and if a target was moving it was easier to hit. Out with two friends on a private range (archery golf) the first shot ( by a true expert ) hit the bullseye dead centre (about 60 yards...certainly not more) ...the next guy (using a bow sight rather than via instinctive shooting) split the first arrow. Then the first guy took another shot and split the second arrow......I was the amateur and took the next shot and split the third arrow....all four in the same little hole....name the odds!!!! Pity we did not have a camera. Sometimes life is not fair!!!!!

It is great fun each spring to head back to the woods and call in Mr. Tom. We had our first meal of fresh turkey on the day he was harvested, my wife is an amazing cook, it was awesome. We debone our turkeys, and freeze them in different cuts/packages. We really enjoy all the cuts, even the thighs and legs which can be quite tough (to say the least). My wife seasons the legs and thighs and then cooks them in a pressure cooker. They are amazingly tasty and tender when cooked that way. It was a great hunt, I sure enjoyed the challenge of calling them in from so far and the heart pounding anticipation that is part of the fun. Great to hear from you Mac, all the best Buddy!

I have some tiny seedling black locust trees in the house now. I'm hoping to figure out how to keep them from winter killing. I hear it is fantastic wood.

      Hello Buddy, Kudos to your Aunt for starting the trees from seeds, I am impressed! I have a friend that once showed me where his descendants had settled (as pioneers), the only sign of where their cabin was, was the hole where the root cellar had been dug and a stand of Black Locust trees surrounding the cabin site. Coincidently, he is a retired forester. I asked him about the trees, he told me he had thought they were planted by settlers in our area to help with honey production. He also mentioned that Black Locust lumber is very dense and has great rot resistance. I think it is great that you have some seedlings, I hope they do well in your Northern Winters. As always, it is great to hear from you. Paul

    I have a Honda FOURTRAX FOREMAN RUBICON 4X4 AUTOMATIC DCT EPS 4-wheeler. I’m thinking of getting a side by side. The 520 looks promising, however it has no power steering. Really looking forward to for a trail models and I’m partial Honda for obvious reasons. I’m also looking at the 700 which you said is wider. However it has power steering as well as more power and other advantages. The dealer I go to usually has “plain Jane” bare bones models as well as models with what customers would usually put already installed. I wish Honda would add power steering to the 500 & 520.

      Hello Curtis, We could not be happier with our Pioneer 700. Yesterday my wife took our first ride of the season. We covered over almost 170 km on mixed trails. Our machine is a delight to drive, I especially appreciate the power steering and automotive style torque converter and transmission. Since producing the video you watched we have added soft doors and a soft rear windshield. Although yesterday was quite chilly ( a few degrees above freezing) we were warm, dry, and comfortable throughout the trip. When we were looking at machines and had a 520 on order, I had already decided that I was going to add aftermarket power steering. All in all, we are so happy with our choice of machines. Good luck in your quest for a machine, I am confident you cannot go wrong buying a Honda. All the best, Paul

    Thanks for good tips in valves, helped a lot. Try this next time, instead of screwdriver, use 1/4" dowel, and have a sharpie nearby, as you feel you're at TDC, mark a line around dowel where it meets plug threads, and rotate engine a couple of times to validate TDC, by watching location of sharpie line as it nears plug opening. Thanks again.

    Bummed you said Ontario Canada not Ontario NY. I've got more dead ash than 10 people can shake sticks at. Parents built new cow barn in '79. All lumber but mow floor is home grown ash that was milled 1/2 mile down the road. They put woodstove in the house to burn all the slab wood. It lasted lil over 2 yrs. What model Deere ya got there? 2750 myself. It handles 99% of my firewood. Between pulling logs, hauling in carryall, and splitting w 3pt splitter.

      Hello Brandon, Greetings from the other "Ontario". I can appreciate all of the dead Ash around your place, our local countryside is much the same. It breaks my heart to lose such a valuable species. It is fantastic that your parents built a cow barn with Ash from the farm. And to get two years of heat from the slabwood, what an added bonus! We built a workshop on our farm with Soft Maple harvested on the home farm and sawn on our home built mill. It was a great project. We burn most of our slabwood in the wood furnace in the shop. 2750/55's were and are still great tractors. We have an 1840 with a 245 loader. Ole Betsy serves us well. Thanks for reaching out and saying hello. Your encouragement is appreciated!

      @@OutothehousewithPaul now that you say 1840, I have watched one of your cutting vids b4. Didn't know that model, had to look it up. I'm not in Ontario but close enough that you could've come filled up your truck 3-4 or 34 times. Really hate to see it just rot. Trees going down real bad in the woods but not so bad in hedgerows. Your ideas on y?

      @@brandonhoad9033 Hello Brandon, The 1840 was a Canadian model of a tractor made in Manheim Germany. It may have been the same as a 2040 built in the US. All new John Deere tractors imported in Canada below 100 hp were German built (import laws and tarriffs??) and anything 100 hp and above were built in Waterloo Iowa. I am not sure where they are sourced/built today. We have an old AR and LI (as well as an Allis Chalmers B) that I hope to restore one day. I have great respect for old machinery! I am not sure about the answer to your question re. fencerow vs. woodlot Ash going down. There are few large stands of Ash in the bush here, they are mostly scattered. Unfortunately all Ash are pretty well finished here. Any areas that did have significant concentrations of Ash are a mess and will be years in transitioning to other species. Oh well... Hope you are enjoying our change in the weather, our neighbours were cultivating before our last snow storm and I am sure some will be back on the land tomorrow. All the best!

      Hello Corey, Great to hear from you Buddy. Losing the Ash species is quite a loss for us all. There is a small village close to us that had large and stately Ash lining its streets. It was a huge amount of work removing them from amidst the wires, poles, buildings etc. The team that looked after the tree removal work did an admirable job. I cannot imagine how much Ash you have processed, and how much work it has been. I bet the firewood has been greatly appreciated by many on cold winters' nights. All the best Buddy!

    Finally got the chance to watch this. Those varieties are foreign to me, though I've obviously heard of them. Do you need big stuff quarter sawn before you use it for handles? I expected you would have salvaged and sawn a few boards for that purpose.

      @OutothehousewithPaul Před 4 měsíci

      Hello Buddy, It is interesting that Ash, Elm and Butternut are not native to your area. I assume you have mostly Boreal species: black and white spruce, balsam fir, jackpine, tamarack, birch, trembling aspen and balsam poplar? One day we hope to visit Alberta, so many people from here have headed West and stayed. The countryside looks amazing! I did not save any of the lumber from the Ash to saw but do have a few other Ash logs waiting to be sawn. You are right, the best way to produce handle wood is to quarter saw. It is always great to see your videos, I really appreciate the shots taken from the cab of the truck as well as those of machinery working. I hope you have had a good winter and spring on the farm and on the job is good.

      Hello Buddy, My heart is a little saddened by the loss of some of our Native Species; Butternut, Beech, Elm, and of course Ash. We certainly have a bit of firewood ahead in all the Ash that we need to harvest. In my younger years we harvested many large stately Elm that had succumb to Dutch Elm Disease. We burned lots of Elm and harvested quite a bit of lumber. We all had a Blessed Easter thanks. The older I get the more I realize the immensity of what it means. I/we are so thankful, we are Blessed beyond measure! Retirement; we are on the path but are not quite there yet.
