I'm a lifelong musician who enjoys playing completely improvised music with friends who are good players and listeners. We gather in my studio about once a month and I record the improvs on 24 track while shooting video as well. We usually play for about 2 hours, which results in 4-6 good jams. I post-produce the audio and video, ending up with the videos you see here, and audio-only tracks which I post on SoundCloud. Learn more about me at www.roysmith.net
Deep dive into interactive effects section of the Guitar Rig From Hell
This is the second "Deep Dive" tour of my guitar rig, focusing on the interactive live playing capabilities of the system. Viewers of my channel are familiar with my complex guitar rig (known as the Guitar Rig From Hell). It is used on studio and Groovatine gigs featured on this channel. But I often get asked to explain how it works, so I'm shooting this series of videos to explain how it all works. There are many videos here showing this rig in action and still more on my Soundcloud channel - www.soundcloud.com/roysmith #GR-55 #ParkerFly #strymon #korgkaoss3

An Annotated Tour of "The Guitar Rig From Hell" GR-55
zhlédnutí 240Před 3 lety
This is a short demonstration of my guitar synthesizer rig that is based on the Roland GR-55, Parker Fly guitar, Strymon Timeline and Mobius, and Loopy software. I annotated the video describing what I'm doing with each change. I use this rig for Groovatine improvisations and I often get questions about it, so I thought it might be interesting to guitar nerds.

I forgot how good this take was!
Dude ur that dude guy !!! Thank you so much
This is great. I was thinking about getting one of these for ages. Just ordered one!. I was a bit worried that it would provide great synth sounds but not much on the guitar front. So thanks for this video. It's the only one I've seen on guitar only effects. I'm not sure it has as much as the GT100 I currently use but it looks like it's pretty good! Are the ready made patches good or do you need to make your own?
In my opinion, most of the factory sounds are bad, the rest have great ideas but need to be tweaked to be usable for my purposes. Also, they vary widely in volume, so when you try to use it in a performance setting, you'll need to switch between your patches and make sure they have the levels you want. That's really easy to do - just press "EZ Edit", use the scroll knob to adjust the volume, and then press the "Write" button twice to write the patch back to the 55. Also, make sure you get a copy of GR-Floorboard (the software I show here). Deep editing on the unit itself is torture.
Thanks for the advice
Great information! I was wondering if there was a way or setting where one string could translate to a full chord?
Not really in the GR-55 itself. You could easily take the MIDI note out from the GR-55 and run it into a synth that is setup to play full chords when it receives certain notes.
@@RoySmithVideo oh great suggestion!!! I'll have to explore that
All those results sound really disgusting
Thank you for your uplifting and helpful comment, Ricardo.
Love the solos on this one!
Nice....very nice.
Very interesting
Hello, can you share the sound of smooth jazz guitar? Greetings.
It's available on VGuitarforums, in the "Jazz guitar" section. I took a patch called "Motete" and modified it to add some frills, then reposted my version.

Hi Robin, I'm from Chile, how can I get that clean guitar sound? Greetings.
Read the comments below.

Outstanding playing!
Thank you!
Roy Great job. Presets are average. What aftermarket patches have you found from other people to be a good resource to download for your own use.
There are hundreds of good 55 patches in the 55 section of vguitarforums.com

Thanks, bro!
The original brought me here. I have not heard any covers of Walter's music.
Great video .....an oldie but a goodie for sure. I see this software as a demystifier of the inner workings of the gr55 which is extremely clumsy to navigate on the machine itself ....much like the line6 gearbox software was for the pods .....i just bought another gr55 after selling my previous ones out of frustration ....i have a better handle on the device now and understand it's strengths and weaknesses and i just downloaded the floorboard sortware the other day and look forward to using it to finally create a series of complex and usable tones for my live solo performances which will re commence in 2022
The GR-55 is very deep tool and I agree, nearly impossible to program using the front panel. Kudos to GumTown for creating the Floorboard software. I want to encourage anyone who uses this software to send a tip to him via PayPal. You might find my newer tour of my GR55 rig of interest, I have taken the unit to a high level of function.
how do you connect all this? tnx
Audio: Stereo outputs from GR-55 go to Mobius and then Timeline, then to Korg Kaossilator - then to speakers. MIDI-right iPad MIDI out goes to Mobius MIDI IN and the OUT gots to Timeline MIDI IN. Mobius is set to use channel 3 and Timeline is set to use channel 4. On the left iPad, MIDI out goes to the GR-55 MIDI IN.
How is the iPad connected to the Gr55 please?
I use an iPad dock that has a MIDI in and out. The MIDI out goes to the GR-55 MIDI in. The iPad dock is the Behringer IS-202. It is not made anymore and only works with older iPads that have the large connector.
Are all those sounds just in the Gr55? I have a Parker with the Grsphrec ghost bridge I’d like to achieve the different guitars through different amp thing
Yes, everything you are hearing is from my GR-55 - no guitar pickups or amps. The GR-55 has very powerful modeling capability to create any guitar tone you want, and then modeled amps, speakers, microphones, rooms, and multi-effects. You just need to mount the GK3 pickup on your guitar for it to work.
I have the Graphtec hexphonic bridge in my Parker nitefly so i don’t need the GK3, I’ve been offered the Vg8 or a VG88 at a reasonable price. I don’t want Synths sounds, I just want cosm strats pls and rickies! Do you suggest the vg8 or vg88. I’ve read that the Viopatches in the vg 8 are better than anything else. Any thoughts?
@@cobowe My suggestion is that with the graphtec pickup, you will not be able to get very good modeled sounds from either the GR-55 or the VG-99. I know this from personal experience. I had a Brian Moore guitar with a Graphtec system and it worked well for the synth side of the GR-55. However the modeling sounds were never very good for two reasons... first the Roland modeling software was designed using a magnetic pickup (GK3), not a piezo. The signal created by a piezo pickup is very different from a magnetic pickup, and that's the cause of the problem. The models expect a magnetic sounding input but with Graphtec, they get a piezo sounding input. The second problem for me was the fact that the graphtec was on a whammy bridge, and the physical movement of my hands on the bridge caused all sorts of problems for the Roland systems (both pitch detection for MIDI and modeling). That's why many people use a subsonic filter with piezos. I understand why people think piezos are great for driving Roland gear - they are convenient, but the fact of the matter is that the Roland gear just works much better with GK-3 magnetic pickups.
Nice work here…and FUN!!
I’m also one who is all about improving with every backing track I’ve recorded. I’ve now come to the point of wondering how I could quickly switch from a one patch to another 12 patches away on my GR55. You have resolved this issue…I’ll be back for more of your incredible setup.
Found this video on the Vguitars forum. Interesting, you seem to favor many “like” patches that I favor. Love the production quality of the audio here. I’m a one man band and have been since discovering the Roland MC50 and the Sound Canvas. I’ve evolved to using self recorded backing tracks. The initial ‘annotation’ states you’re using Loopy on an iPad. The iPad seems to be set within a hardware device. Can you share what that is?
It's a "dock" that was made by Behringer called an iStudio. It's very nice, provides guitar inputs and outputs, midi in / out, and a mixing and headphone system. They worked with the old style of iPads with the big 24 pin plug. Sadly, when iPad switched to the smaller plug 5 years ago, Behringer did not make an updated iStudio, so there is nothing this nice for recent iPads.
@@RoySmithVideo Crap!…lol. Thank you for your reply.
A man after my own heart! Being as my rig is a Fly into a GR-55 and Axe FX, I’m looking forward to more videos inspiring me to buy more gear.
You have G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome!) Can your GR-55 transpose to alternate tuning on the fly? I might get the GP-10 if it can accomplish this. Also, since you have G.A.S., look into the Godin xTSA. It has piezo pup, electric pup and 13 pin midi port for synth. It sounds incredible w/my Fishman acoustic amp and plays really well- high quality instrument to be sure.
@@MOAB-UT The GR-55 can do string-based transposition to any number of tunings. In my opinion, piezo-based 13 pin systems do not work well with modeled COSM sounds, which is the basis of VG-99, GR-55 and GP-10. The reason for this is the Roland gear was designed and built using magnetic pickups of the GK-2 and 3. The signals presented to the DSP from a piezo pickup are very very different from magnetic signals from a GK. The pitch detection works fine, but the modeling aspects just don't work well.
@@RoySmithVideo Thanks. In that case I could buy one that comes with the pup or just buy a Martin D-18 and mic it. do you think the GP-10 is a good option for a non-pro. Just want something new to have fun with. I don't play out- maybe camping is about it but I do have and don't mind investing in really nice gear if it's worth it. Is there a way to mount it without drilling into my guitars? I really don't want to do that.
@@MOAB-UT The Roland synth pickup works just fine with double stick tape and does not require drilling. Sometimes people do mount it permanently, but that's a choice. I have seen people use them on acoustic guitars but personally I would not do that - the audible sound of the guitar will conflict with whatever synth or modeled tone you are producing with the GR-55. Particularly if you use alternate tunings, that would be a problem.
@@RoySmithVideo Thanks. Good to know tape/less perm. options can work. That's of course assuming it fits. Some guitars need some router work to achieve the correct height.
Love it!! Waiting for the part 2
Just uploaded it! czcams.com/video/WB2hLXQoCoM/video.html

Thank you very Much i HAD NO IDEA tHANKS!!
Nice jam. I noticed you're playing a Parker that looks like it's got a GK-3 attached. I have a Parker, also, but can't see how I can attach a GK-3 to it without modifying the Parker to do it. Can you show me a close up video or pic of how your GK-3 is attached to the Parker? Thanks!
You can attach the GK3 using double stick tape. It does not mar the finish and of course there are no screw holes.
Thank you for your very helpful video!
The 'Floorboard' software is a MUST!!!! It's free, and it works better than most software, [ANY software! LOL!!] - - (I'm a developer with degrees in both music and computer science...). I've been working with this synth since it was released! I just now ordered the RMC OPT-01 'chip' to reduce the 'noise that all pickups produce and that make this synth almost unusable on certain patches, (like Grand Piano). I'll come back after I install the OPT-01 with a review.
Thanks for taking the time! this software, and your video, have helped clarify and understand my GR-55 a lot! I wish there was more clarity about assigning controls [ctl pedal, exp, etc] in the software though. I am still fumbling about and the manual is of little help! Any resource yu can point me to is appreciated

This song written by the late Walter Becker (of Steely Dan). The original appears on Becker's Circus Money album. Nicely done instrumental cover here. Thanks for posting. (Song actually starts at 00:20)
Just one question... Is this a strictlt a standalone vst or can it work within a DAW?
