Hunt for the best Chorley Cakes in Chorley!
I go on the hunt for the best Chorley Cakes in Chorley! Join me for a tour of the town and the famous Chorley Market! Will I find Chorley Cakes in this Lancashire town? Will they match up to the taste test?
Chorley is a town and the administrative centre of the wider Borough of Chorley in Lancashire, England, 8 miles (13 km) north of Wigan, 11 miles (18 km) south west of Blackburn, 11 miles (18 km) north west of Bolton, 12 miles (19 km) south of Preston and 20 miles (32 km) north west of Manchester. The town's wealth came principally from the cotton industry.
In the 1970s, the skyline was dominated by factory chimneys, but most have now been demolished: remnants of the industrial past include Morrisons chimney and other mill buildings, and the streets of terraced houses for mill workers. Chorley is the home of the Chorley cake.
A Chorley cake is made using currants, sandwiched between two layers of unsweetened shortcrust pastry. The Chorley cake is significantly less sweet than Eccles cake, and is commonly eaten with a light spread of butter on top, and sometimes a slice of Lancashire cheese on the side.
Chorley cakes are a close relative of the more widely known Eccles cake, but have some significant differences. An Eccles cake uses flaky puff pastry, which after baking is normally a deeper brown in colour. The other difference is that the currants in the Eccles cake are often concentrated together in the middle while in the Chorley cake the fruit is usually evenly distributed. It is not uncommon to see some sugar added to the fruit, or sweeter raisins or sultanas used. Locals often refer to Chorley cake as Fly Pie.

The Circus Tavern on Portland Street in Manchester doesn't claim to be the smallest pub, but you could fit three of 'em in there. I've been in both. A huge problem with Southport is how the Liverpool contingent of the LCR, especially our beloved Metro Mayor, treats Southport with utter distain. I attended a meeting of Sefton businesspeople in Southport a few years ago and Rotherham was speaking. He banged on that Southport wasn't the brand, but it was Liverpool that was the brand that would bring people in. This didn't go down well with the local tourist businesses. He scarpered back to the city centre ASAP as he was too busy to answer a question. The town would be better going back to Lancashire. Of a day, Southport has its attractions and I enjoy shopping there only living about 10 miles away. It does have its problems like anywhere else....most of these problems need rounding up and locking up (the usual daytime drunks and druggies any other town or city has). The highlight for me is always a trip to The Atkinson as it's a really nice (free) museum and art gallery. It is worth a day out folks!

All the retail relocated on the Robin Park Shopping Centre. The actual town centre is depressing. King Street had all the night clubs that was decades ago. There was policing at one time and then stopped funding. I remember the area became notorious for sometime and then died off. This could be a generational thing, or the licensing became governed by the council and not the police that use to grant the licence. Therefore, there is a lot in that to do with saturation and venue types. Wigan is my birthplace but I've lived in various parts of the country. There are other places looking worse and it's fair to say the presant state of the country (social economics). However, the heritage and Haigh Hall I'm not really interested with that. Infact it would be better flattered and modernised. That's my opinion and really it's all appealing to one sector and its inverted... young people will not want to live here. There is nothing really for them.

Very interesting about the funding issues, I don’t personally think that retail parks should be allowed unless they are properly connected to the town and accessible by foot, otherwise they will always take trade from the high street.

Quite a lot of incorrect information here. The road you're driving down within the first few minutes was originally "Long Lane", the ORIGINAL route to South Hawes/Southport from Scarisbrick Bridge. The Kew gardens station was on a totally different line, long gone. No part of Meols Cop Park (it is Blowick, not Kew) formed any part of Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens was accessed from The Alexandra Hotel, now the site of The Richmond Pub. The site closed in the early 1930s. Canal??? That is Fine Janes Brook!!! 🤨

Thank you some interesting points there, I will need to look into those and check it. The railway station to Kew Gardens, was in the centre of what’s now B&Q, I never knew where the entrance to the gardens was, as was difficult to find out. 👍

@@andrewemmerson unsure why my first reply has been removed... but anyway... I am fully aware that Kew Gardens station stood where B&Q is however, the vast majority of the road you drove down follows the course of a lane that is many centuries old, it is how the North Meols parish centre (Churchtown) was accessed from the east, and prior to what is now the course of Norwood Ave/Meols Cop Rd being constructed c1818, it formed part of the route taken to South Hawes/South Port from Scarisbrick Bridge. It did not form part of the railway line. A small section of the line (long gone) ran adjacent to the road now serving B&Q. Feel free to check any of my social media content regarding Southport history, it is all bona fide and fully researched/referenced. 👍

The best full English brekkies in Southport are the steak breakfast at Lords cafe bar on Lord st or the full monty at the whistle stop cafe round the back of the train station 👍
