    Thank you for this! I'm trying to set up a way to make my sync process faster using this. For this- when I insert a video clip and want to then insert an audio clip from an external recorder, I'd like it to be that the playhead stays at the beginning of the previously inserted video clip- any chance this is possible without having to switch focus to the timeline (keeping focus on the bins)? Happy to explain further in case that wasn't articulated well. Thank you so much!

    If I get this right this is just a solution to use ableton as a surround mixing device only in live situation but you can’t export this multichannel mix into one multichannel track to use on other systems (like in movie theaters)? If this is right, how can I export as such a single track ? And if there’s no way to do it, why bother using ableton to mix in surround and not using another DAW that can also export multichannel mixes? Thx

    • @erickuehnl
      @erickuehnl Před 5 měsíci

      No, Ableton has no way to natively export a polyphonic WAV file for 5.1. So you'd have to export the returns and then combine them in another application. I use the Dolby Atmos Renderer to create Atmos, 5.1, and Binaural deliverables from Ableton projects. It works nicely, but probably not worth the cost unless you are making money on surround work.

    Wow the select split notes "all notes" checkbox no longer exists in PT 2024. You are forced to choose a range and it defaults to C2-C3. So I decided to copy some notes and paste them 2 octaves above and below and highlighted the clip and pressed alt-y, thinking it would know to fill out the range automatically with the note range in the midi clip (after all, why would they remove the option otherwise)?, but nope, C2 to C3. That's pretty darn dumb.

    Nothing ever works for me like it does in these HELPFUL INSIGHTS... I have a complex session up that i've been working on for 13 years. And I would have been done 13 years ago if I could simply do what I did in the analog world with a little more precision. As I am trying to do now. Its' SUCh a F(%#@$ PAIN... So I wanted to do this and label the parts of the song for quick access... but I do what you say here and it all works... but when I get done... there is no mark there... I'm trying it again... stupid fucking thing says "now adding marker 23"... and it never occurs to this or the people that engineered it that after TWENTY THREE MARKERS, that maybe whatever the FFF is wrong with this, that they PROBABLY want markers they CAN SEE... and maybe whatever is making them INVISIBLE, was a bad idea, because when you THINK ABOUT IT, markers are really ONLY THERE FOR THE VISIBILITY OF THEM, HENCE THE TERM.... THE WORD... MAR-KERS... THEY MARK THE GD thing... NO ONE AT ALL ... not so much the stealth abilities of SAID MARKERS to exist and then alert NO ONE AT ALL to their existence... I would say that MARKERS OF THAT VARIETY are probably a bad sort... one that NO ONE AT ALL! wouldn't really be markers at all... Makes you wonder why the makers of pro tools are EVEN HANGING OUT AT ALL with these pointless markers that exist... but not so much in the world where we live and do our job... they're TOO COOL to be a marker and MARK something... they do it a different way... a way which makes me want to attach needle nosed vice grips to their nipples... and clamp them down, slowly, tightening them over a span of three days as they turn black and fall off, then sampling the screams and making a big DANCE HIT from their screams, called NIPPLE LIPPLE ECTOMY... and with the money I got from that, set them free, set them up with some prosthetic nipples and take them to a glamor shots, who advises me and shaves their asses, inverts them and teaches them how to look like vacant asses in their pics. Because they sure as hell didn't make it as markers... I'd like to turn them into a marker... a greasy blood stain... that would mark and denote that marker that F'd around and found out about the dark side of hanging out with the sordid bunch of markers that were assembled by protools on this most modern edition I have on my computer here... maybe the kind of spot that if I were to shoot it out of an actual cannon at a 200. year old oak tree... I bet THAT would heave a MARKER... blow the bark off and then embedded in the living wood... SO MANY OTHER THINGS if these GD things actualy LEFT A GD MF MARK in the first place... how's it feel? Reading this whole diatribe? Do you feel like your time is important? That this is the best thing you coule be doing, with a record label, hot to get your recordings with you late wife... and of course they do.. she's awesome.. and so now, you have to revisit old sessions that were awesome...but the STUPIDITY of the platform THEN and NOW stats to GRATE on you SO MUCH... you fantasize about RIPPING the nipples off the aging folks that should have retired instead of engineering advanced obsolescence in to something brand new, instead of finding the necessary 12 year old firebrands that speak HTML advanced to each other... TOO LATE... your time has been served... this will suck for years to come.

Then I play (on keyboard too) my open hihats , ghost notes & drum rolls, cymbals etc on a separate midi track, quantize later & bounce both tracks together into a wav, Is there a way to record the extra midi rolls etc all on the same track without wiping my basic beat ? Also what does the quantize swing button do ? Thanks

    • @erickuehnl

      You can enable MIDI Merge to add the extra MIDI data without erasing what you already have. Here’s the weird thing: you can’t do it with Loop Record enabled, but it actually works with Loop Playback instead. So if you like to record MIDI while looping be sure to change that. I just combine the two concepts when teaching this: “Loop Playback and MIDI Merge.”

    Hello Sir, I have exactly the same setup, all this while I had been using 2.1, the bass management was controlled by Genelc 7040A (2 inputs and 2 outputs). Now I have procured 3 more 8020 monitors to setup surround 5.1 using the same Scarlett 18i20. How would the 7040A control the bass management? Or would it be just one scarlet output going into the 7040A input? I'm slightly confused, the 2.1 setup was different as per the bass management was concerned. Awaiting your reply. Thanks in advance.

    • @erickuehnl
      @erickuehnl Před rokem

      The 7040 only supports stereo bass management. So you'll need to find a software solution to handle the bass management (such as the Waves M360 or Dolby Atmos Renderer), or upgrade to the 7050 which supports bass management up to 5.1. Another option could be to continue using the 7040 for the left and right channels, and then use DAW EQ to roll off the low end of the center and surround channels so that they have no bass to be "managed." You'll also need to eliminate LFE in this scenario so just mixing 5.0. I had an older 5.1 Genelec system where the sub only handled L,C,R bass management so I just had to be careful to have no bass content below 80 Hz (the crossover frequency for the subwoofer) in the surrounds. You'd have to experiment to see if such a configuration works for your particular situation, but at least you wouldn't have to spend any more money and could probably still create good sounding 5.0 mixes.

I was curious about asking the question, that if along with the 5 Scarlett outputs going to the monitors(L,C,R,Ls,Rs), if I give the 6th output to one of the LFE L/R inputs,( there's no LFE IN in 7040A), will that work? Ofcourse there would be no bass management, however the LFE line would be an independent channel. Can I get signal out of the LFE this way?

    Hi Eric thanks for a great video! I wondered if a musician composer works for game developers, does the composer need to use the Fmod or Wwise in order to be part of the audio team ? It depends with which size of company the composer work with? Such as AA developers or indie developers?

    • @erickuehnl

      In my experience, the larger studios don't expect composers to be involved with implementation. There's usually an in-house team that handles music implementation. I don't think its common for indie games either, but it certainly could be helpful when trying to land that type of gig.
