I am a professional musician and music teacher based in Philadelphia, PA. I post some music, fun arrangements, and lessons here mostly focused on the harmonica. Among performing, teaching, and getting studio calls, I also repair and customize harmonicas. I specialize in playing the diatonic harmonica chromatically (bends and overblows), chromatic harmonica, and the more rare types of orchestral harmonicas like the bass and chord harmonicas. As of January 2021, I have joined the Hohner Music family as a performing artist. Please check out my channel and say hi! I hope you enjoy some of my content and that you choose to subscribe for updates! :)

Harmonica Quartet: ABC Trio with Special Guest at SPAH 2024 Rehearsing Dance of the Comedians
SPAH 2024 was a great time and very busy with four performances for me. This is a rehearsal video, actually the first time all four of us played together and just two days before the concert.
This was one of the main groups that I was playing with called the the ABC Trio with AJ Windmeyer on Chord harmonica/harmonetta, Boaz Kim on Bass Harmonica, and Phil Caltabellotta on Chromatic/ Diatonic harmonicas. This early Harmonicats arrangement of the Dance of the Comedians also had a Polyphonia harmonica part which our friend Steve Watne played. Pretty rare to find a recording with the fourth part especially with a Polyphonia harmonica!
SPAH was such a busy time for all of us, so we found rehearsal time whenever we could find the time for it. Thanks for watching!

My student’s middle school concert on harmonica! Melody & solo-Head Over Heels by Alanis Morrisette.

Here’s a clip from one of my student’s (pink hair) middle school concerts. Yep, playing harmonica as their main instrument in the jazz band 🎵. The tune is Alanis Morrisette’s song, “Head Over Feet,” which has a harmonica solo in it and I transcribed it for them, but my student preferred to play something else during the solo break. I wrote this solo for them which also nicely used some of the b...

First thing: Thank you Hohner and Hohner USA for all of the support! Playing this harmonica earlier today inspired me to make a video about it. I've posted on Facebook about it about 2 years ago. Hohner's tooling has definitely improved since I've first started...

This was back when I received 7 shruti boxes for an emergency rush repair. At this point I had already finished 2 of them and sent it to the music shop to complete their sales. Hohner Polyphonia - Christmas Time is Here

One of my favorite melodies from the Peanuts cartoons. This was a quick recording using my pre-WWII Hohner Polyphonia harmonica that I had just restored, which has such a nice tone. I recorded this straight into my iPhone with no external mic on my keyboard or phone, but the singing tone comes through. I think I had recorded this in 2021. How fast time has flown! @HohnerMusic @Playhohner

More modifications were done besides what is shown here, and then some heavy reed work to create an improved response, dynamic range, better high and low register ease of playing, and a wide bending range across the whole harmonica. The bends do not harm the reeds or create extra noises like squeals.
Bass harmonica with the band ‘Box of Books’ for the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony

Fascinante!!
Can you play the theme from "Green Acres"?
So close
Thanks for watching and the comment, Ryan!
An amazing sound!!
Thank you so much. I try to emphasize building a fuller tone with all of my students, especially on bends and overbends. Still in progress here but a lot further than some people who have been playing for 20+ years.
Great Job Lads!! BASS!!
Thank you, Gig! I hope you’re getting a chance to play your bass harmonica a lot!
@@BoazKimMusic I am!! thanks!! It almost sounds like i know what i am doing!
That’s really great! Looking forward to hearing some bass from you!
Why does it sound slowed down ?
It was at about 90% speed when I played it as I was learning it. I just barely got it up to 110% of the speed a few days later.
Fantastic stuff Boaz!
Thank you, Pat! Lots of different kinds of harmonicas in this one. Did you ever play a chord harmonica?
Turn that kid on to Little Walter!
I have and we worked on a few classic blues harmonica standards but they have certain songs they need to play with their school band that is not too blues based.
🔥
Thank you, Adam!
Not 'John Popper' but very nice, my man.
Yeah. Nobody can be Jon Popper but him, but it was great to learn this iconic solo of his from a legendary song.
Can you play Basketball?
Does he need to? 😅
Not too well! I can whistle and play through the Harlem Globetrotter’s iconic theme song, though!
How loud can you be using that mic for the bass harmonica? I would love to play some funky tunes with my band but with a regular mic it doesn’t get that much volume and my band mates will eat the harmonica sound. Also what kind of mic are you using? Thank you and keep rocking!
The mic has some issues with feedback easily and picking up ambient sounds, but is somewhat easier to use than a standard vocal mic on a stand. In the right setting, it’ll work well. If playing through an amp, you’ll need much more wattage than a bass guitar for example, and hope you don’t feedback. The mic is the Suzuki bass harmonica mic.
@@BoazKimMusic I was just chatting with Winslow about you and harmonica mic for bass. I do play mostly with a full on electric band but I do also bring the volume down for mellow gigs. It would be fun to add some effects and stuff to experiment but a regular mic doesn’t help. Now for feed back you can get a pedal like the lone wolf and the noise reduction of boss it helped me with ambient sounds with other mics that catch the ambience and that might help you. Anyway I would love to boy one mic and try.
True about the antifeedback pedals. I have used it with the bass out of necessity and it works pretty well. Depends on the room/band setting, though. The mic definitely helps. I’d love to learn how to design my own as some of these don’t quite have the tone control options I’d like for the different sound/tone options for bass harmonica.
Can I use that mic or any Suzuki series mics for bass harmonica on Honher bass harps? Winslow said no but he actually recommended me to ask you.
Why am I single?
I don’t know but glad you are enjoying the music.
Where can I get the sheet music for Peg O My Heart as you played?
Hi Timothy. I think I have it. Can you send me an email through my website? www.boazkimmusic.com
Got to be one of the more difficult Harmonica songs
It’s a challenge for sure!
Any time away from phones computers and Instagram is a plus.
It’s always good to see schools in the US that continue to have a functional music program, especially ones with more than one teacher teaching the different music classes. Usually this essential subject is one of the first to get funding cut, and even totally removing it.

GD that's hard af ❤❤❤
It is a pretty cool solo. Definitely tough parts in it!
I just ordered a harmonica. I’ve loved blues traveler since I was like 7, I’m excited to learn it lol
That’s so awesome! The harmonica is truly a great instrument. I hope you enjoy it. Btw, I recommend starting with a Hohner Special 20 in C to start with. That’s a lower-mid priced harmonica but it’s a very consistent build with a good playing quality and tone, compared to some cheaper models not made by Hohner.
What key is the harmonica? Is it key of D?
Yes, it is the key of D.
Dude this actually so sick. You fricking killed it my dude. Did John Popper some justice my friend
Welldone!!!! A test to your teaching ability!!
Thank you so much! It’s a pretty exciting journey with trying to get harmonica included in schools!
Very cool Boaz!😎👍
Thank you, Pat!
That was terrifyingly good! And the one hand out for crescendos was a great touch. What a champion
Thank you so much! I might be performing this solo in Baltimore next March so I’ll be revisiting it soon.
He did great!
Thank you! I think Aaron (they/them) did really well. They were placed in the very front this time, too.
Awesome!
Much appreciated, Bry!
Thank you! The white flap under the air holes is making a flapping noise. Would anyone know how to fix that? Thank you so much!
@@SAnd-if9sm is the flapping constant or only for a short time when you fill it with air?
Hi! Only a short time when I fill it with air.
You will have to check for the condition of the flap. If it’s really bent or dry-not flexible, that isn’t good. A little noise is common when you fill the bellows.
@@BoazKimMusicthank you! What do you mean by dry?
@SAnd-if9sm Often they are made with leather. They should be very soft and pliable. If it is dried out as leather does as it gets older, it’ll become stiff, bent out of shape, and maybe even crack.
👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 great job!! That's very hard to do!!!
Thank you so much! It’s definitely a challenging solo!
Darn good!
Thank you for watching!
Hell yeah, dude. That song is real special to me and John Popper is just amazing and you did a great job performing that solo.🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thank you so much! Yeah, Jon Popper and this song are amazing.

Playing chord harmonica is fun and athletic!
And all this time I thought the music in Hayao Miyazaki movies was being played on an accordion 🤯
Subscribed. Ill hear more please ❤
Now I'll never buy one in case they send me a 'returned' one. Yuk
@@michellebeaulieu9487 A reputable dealer would not send you a used one if it is labeled as new. Sometimes you’ll find people sell them used, which I’d recommend getting it cleaned and sanitized before playing.
✨Nice harp playing ❤️ Very nice choice of artists too ❣️ Slowing down your playing while practising and concentrating on the timing and accents on the licks is great ! Here ‘s one of my favourites Run Around by Blues Traveller . Your meter - time is important . I am still working on it , that song too! He is an incredible player and great singer too! If you slow the speed of the recording down while your practicing you can hear the licks and bends clearly until your ready to run through them in actual time. It has helped me to learn songs easier . Keep on going it’s great fun ❣️ ✨🌲🦶🏿🌳🧚♀️🌲🐕🦺😊🕊️✨
Hi! Yes, I slowed down this song to learn it as Jon's playing is lightning fast in this solo. There are parts of Run Around, during the 2nd solo, that I think are much more rhythmically and technically difficult. Any recordings of you playing it?
That was awesome.
Thank you for watching!
This is such a great video and a very cool instrument. And you made these??? That's amazing. The double bass can get down to a low C with an extension which many orchestral players have. I sadly do not. Love the low notes!
Hey Lisa Jeanette! I actually customized this bass harmonica down to that contra C for a recording studio out in California. Lucky them! It was a big job, and apparently went to use for a very big client. I would love to make myself one, though it really does push the functionality of the free reeds, at least within the constraints of the design of these.
As a trans girl who likes to sing, I can confirm that this song is basically just my life
I was literally searching how to do a more passable singing voice, and found myself on a video of my childhood band singing
Gomna trans my gender to this.
This is so good, and it even inspired me to find my harmonica.😊
That’s great, Dax! I hope you start to play harmonica again.
No me imagino el mantenimiento a esas bestias
Haha! Do you also play harmonica? Yes, to work on the bass and chord harmonicas it’s a lot of work! Thankfully they don’t need constant work as long as you take preventative measures. But when something goes wrong, or slight tuning of notes, it can take a long time so you don’t accidentally damage something else.
Beautiful!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
GREAT FUCKING JOB!
Thank you so much! I’m happy you enjoyed it!

Thank you so much for your comment!
Dude, fuck yea!! Keep rocking on!
Thank you so much for your comment! I’m happy you enjoyed it!
Wish I could figure out how to loop this!
Thank you! I think the short should loop by itself.
@@BoazKimMusic turns out it does!
@@BoazKimMusic going to be kicking off a podcast soon... Is it possible to licence this performance for my intro? Really cloudy on this but would love to figure it out.
That's a good question. I have a feeling you cannot use it without permission from Blues Traveler.
@@BoazKimMusic I was pondering that but then wondered if when a person "covers" or simply "plays" a song does their performance become the "permission of use" point. Thoughts?
I had it , but i didnt get proper sound to play hindi songs because till 2/3 of the tune is of lower octave. I paid Rs 45 000. My money just gone to dust bin . I am also a good harmonica player , i have CX 12, Seydel Saxony, Chromatix, Chromatic 270. Chromatic 270 Delux , Eastop,
I’m not understanding why this harmonica wouldn’t suit you for those songs when the other harmonicas you listed apparently do. The Super 64X has an extra octave of range compared to a 270 or Saxony.
What is the price of the 16 hole Super Performance X and how do you order it?
I think it depends on the country that you live in for the pricing but it's one of the higher end of chromatic harmonicas that Hohner makes. Also, for the complexities of making a double thick reedplate harmonica. Check in with your local music store to see if they supply Hohner harmonicas. If they don't have one in stock, the should be able to order one for you.
What I like about the Super x is the low notes come through loud and clear
Oh yes. The lower range especially is unique and powerful!
What is the price of the suer 64? How much does it cost? I need the one with 16 holes. I need to know how it can be sent to Morocco.
It might depend on the Hohner dealers in your country. Please check your local music shop and they might have it or be able to order one for you.
Dang!
Thank you for your comment! I hope you enjoyed the solo!
I can hear those " ugh ugh " noises you are making on I believe the draws. Is that so you can get more air out or in?
Good question. I'm making those coughing sounds on the blow notes/chords for a different articulation and stylistic purposes. Nothing about getting rid of excess air or anything faulty with the harmonica.
